Cut up a slice of lemon and chop up in the garbage disposal. The acid in the lemon cleans it and it smells good too. Good luck.
Hi, Moms! Like many of you, I had to grill a LOT of meat after the hurricane knocked all our power out. It was more than we could eat, and I had to put a lot of it down the disposal several nights ago. Well, my disposal has been giving off this "dead" odor, like there's some meat caught in it or in the drain beneath it. I've tried putting baking soda down the drain and letting it sit; I've tried vinegar; I've tried boiling water. The smell is still there--and I don't know what to do! Any suggestions?

I have had the same problem recently and I did the ice thing that was suggested earlier, then I put two to three orange peels down there. Others have suggested lemons, too, which have the same effect - they will make your disposal smell fresh. Now anytime I have lemon, orange or any fruit peels, I grind them down the disposal and my sink always smells fresh. Good luck!
NEVER put meat/fat down the disposal. Since you have, clorox is about your only option now and I seriously doubt that will work. Do it when everyone is out of the house for several hours. Good luck
Sometimes putting a bunch of ice down the disposal and running it for a minute or so helps clear things out. Grinding lemon rinds in the disposal also help it smell better. I wouldn't put meat down the disposal though. Pasta is another bad thing to put in your disposal. Use the garbage can for these things. Disposals aren't as helpful as most people think.
I use lemon after the hurricane in mine. The acid that is in it cut the smell and you are left with a clean lemmon sent. You might have to use a couple just cut them in halves and throw them down.
Hope this helps.
Bleach and lemons work great. There is a product on the market (you can get at Wal-mart) that is specifically made to freshen disposals. I cannot remember the name even though I buy it all the time. It's easy to do and makes your disposal smell fresh and clean! Just look with the cleaning items, you will find it.
Clorox works every time. Just pour a ton down the drain right before you go to sleep (so you don't gas everybody out) and let it sit all night without rinsing it down. In the morning when you wake up, rinse it down and your disposal will smell as good as new. By the way--I put meat and everything else in my disposal. Good luck!
Cut lemons into 1/4 slices. Put them down the disposel.
It will be loud but try cutting up a lemon and putting the chunks in one at a time.
There is a product made for this and I can't remember the name, it is in a white bottle with oranges on it and you can find it at HEB or Walmart with the dishwasher liquid. If you want to go a more natural method, my mom always used oranges. She would cut it up in about 8 pieces and run the disposal - it worked great. Good luck.
There is a product called Plink made just for this. You can buy it at Bed, Bath and Beyond or Linens n Things. I use it about once every other week to keep my disposal clean. It's about 4.99 for ten.
Good luck-
Elizabeth
Hello!
If you have not tried bleach, I would try that. Not bleach-water, just bleach and then let it sit. Pour into both sides of the sink. Hope this works for you.
Have a great and safe week!
