Need Recommendations for Docs/Midwives Who Deliver at Mercy

I am expecting my second child, and, because of my insurance, I need to find a physician or midwife who delivers at Mercy. I am currently with Linda Hackett, CNM, at Coastal Women's Healthcare, who I really liked for my first delivery, but she only delivers at MMC. I want to know who you liked/didn't like and why. Also, have you noticed a significant difference between doctors and midwives in delivery?

What can I do next?

I have not had my babies at Mercy, but was there the whole time my friend was in labor with her daughter . . . and I got to tell you I wish I could have gone there. Ummm call Generations on Brighton Ave and get an OBGYN there. They are great from what I hear.
And the difference between Mid wife’s and Dr ( I think) are the Mid wife’s are there with you the whole time and the Drs just come and deliver the baby.

Good luck.

I had my first son at Mercy in November, and the doctor who delivered was Dr. Wilberg, who works at Generations in Portland. He was the doctor on call, and he was great. He was very calm and told me what to expect. He made me feel at ease, which was wonderful, because I had no idea what to expect. I would highly recommend him.

BACK COVE MIDWIVES!!! They are THE best! Everyone at the office is wonderful and you get the opportunity to see all the midwives over the duration of your pregnancy. They have a wonderful "centering" group that meets once a month. You'd meet with all of their other patients who are delivering in September. I am due in Oct with baby #2 and called the midwives immediately.
I haven't heard that many great things about generations, but I didn't go there so I can't say for sure. Also, Mercy was a great place to deliver, my husand stayed with me in the room the whole time we were there and it had all the comforts of home. Good luck with your decision!

I have 1 child and she was delivered at Mercy. Dr Sarah Freedman is mine and my daughters doctor. She is a wonderful person. She is located in South Portland. Mercy is a great hospital also. They were very helpful. If we were going to have a 2nd child I wouldn't even think of going to MMC. Good luck

Hello-

I only have good things to say about Back Cove Midwives -- http://www.backcovemidwives.com/

When I had my daughter in 2002, Joyce & Ellie were there - I don't know the other 2, but every experience, appointment (I still have my annual exams with Ellie) and especially my birth has been top notch.

When I was pregnant, Ruth Hope was part of BCM and it looks like she is now at:
BirthPartners
Nurse-midwifery Service
132 Spring Street, Portland, Maine 04101
###-###-####
Ruth J. Hope, CNM

She was great when I had appointments with her.

I am a big believer in midwifery and I think the birth experience is much more natural/much less medical when they are involved.

At our birth, in the middle of the night, the lights were all out except a nightlight type thing and they used a flashlight to see what the needed, I was not hooked up to any machines or monitors and we had music playing all night and Ellie ran the hot water for 2 hours going to the sink between every push to wet a cloth to apply to my perineum during pushes so I would not tear...and I did not tear one bit. It took me 2 hours to push my daughter out - she was 8 lbs, but they let me take my time and do it my way instead of coaching me through every push and counting, etc. They let me do what felt right to me. I was very lucky.
Good luck to you.

PS - I also had a "special circumstance" as my daughter had meconium which I discovered when my water broke at home. Ellie would not let me do a water birth as I had hoped/planned, but other than that she did not make a big deal out of it, she did not scare me or take any major medical precautions. She and the nurse (who was awesome) checked my baby's heart rate a lot to make sure she was not in distress, but they allowed me otherwise to have a totally normal and natural birth. I believe a doctor may have medically intervened unnecessarily.
