Look in the refrigerated vegetarian section. It's a meat substitute.
As for using something else, you can go with tofu if intend to keep it vegetarian. I'm personally not a fan of the TVP, but that doesn't mean you won't like it.
I found a recipe I want to try- I have everything except...
8 oz. Textured Vegetable Protein???? What is this and where do I find it at the store? Is there something I can substitue for this?
Thank you! Nope, not a vegetarian, I will be using chicken. The recipe is for stuffed peppers- and my family is a meat eating family :)
Thanks again.

If you're using chicken (or any other real meat) instead of TVP, be sure you cook the dish thoroughly enough to fully cook the poultry or meat.
TVP requires pretty minimal cooking. Overcook it and it toughens. So the time called for cooking or baking in your (originally) vegetarian recipe may be OK for a dish containing only veggies etc. and TVP, but may not be a long enough cooking time for raw meats. You may have to experiment with this one to get the cooking time right -- and safe. Just a thought.
It's a meat substitute used in vegan recipes. Here are other vegan alterntives:
"Quinoa is definitley an okay substitue. It absorbs flavor like tvp and has tons of protein and antioxidants. Another option is lentils. tvp is pretty much soy beans with all the oil squeezed out, so lentils will be a good option. If you like it, you can try scrambled tofu in your meals. It doesn't have the same texture but it is still tasty and good with almost anything."
Or, you can use meat, cubed chicken, ground beef, whatever works with the recipe... You can read more about what it is here:

It's a meat substitute, usually made out of soy. I tend to avoid unfermented soy products and anything that is as highly processed and manufactured as TVP. Are you vegetarian? If not, perhaps you could substitute real meat - maybe ground beef, turkey or chicken. What's the recipe for?

Sounds like vegetarians use it as a meat substitute. Bob's Red Mill brand makes it, so I'm guessing you can find it at Whole Foods.
ah....t.v.p....I love that stuff, you can probably find it at your local walmart or target, called morningstar farms crumbles.....that is one company that provides it
TVP is basically soy protein - it's supposed to be a vegetarian alternative to ground meat - so it's got the texture and protein, without the saturated fat (and the flavor as some people would say - I like it though!).
You can get it at Whole Foods - some grocery stores carry it, just depends on your store.
You can substitute ground turkey or beef for it, you'll just change the nutritional value of the dish of course.
It the "fake" meat sold as Morningstar Farms crumbles.
I'd cook and shred the chicken first. My mom always made stuffed peppers with ground beef, which would also be an option (but again, you'd want to brown it first). Enjoy.
Its just soya nuggests or flakes.
