Hi, I have a shoulder issue and cannot do range of motion exercises due to pain so I need to find an orthopedic who can look at me and help determine next course of action. I am VERY picky about doctors and won't pick one out of the "phone book". Any recommendations??

What can I do next?

I highly recommend Dr. Mayo Friedlis with Capitol Spine & Pain Centers. The practice has an office in Centreville, but I believe he only practices out of the Fairfax and Herndon offices. Their website is www.treatingpain.com. Dr. Friedlis specializes in nonsurgical treatment and helped me recover from chronic whiplash resulting from an auto accident. I had pain in my neck, shoulders, and back for over a year and a half - physical therapy had not worked, but I've now been pain free for 4 years.

The key to recovery for me was prolotherapy - it's a series of injections of a sugar/water solution which irritates the muscle and causes it to restart the healing process. It's been used to treat arthritis and other joint/muscular pain as well - Dr. Friedlis is apparently the leading practitioner in this therapy. There is a lot of information on the practice's website about this and other therapies that they offer. Dr. Friedlis has a great bedside manner, and I wouldn't hesitate to go back to him if I found myself in a similar situation again.

Hope you feel better!

I was rear ended in a car accident on 66 in January. I have had a lot of problems with my neck and shoulder and had surgery on my shoulder in May. I go to Town Center Orthopaedics (www.towncenterorthopaedics.com) in their Centreville office (located right across the street from the Multiplex) and see Dr Berg. He was very good. What I love most about them, though, is the Physical Therapy department. The people there are AWESOME!

What to expect- you will see an orthopaedic surgeon who will take some x-rays and do a physical exam to determine weakness or range of motion issues. You MIGHT get a cortisone shot, but the big thing they are going to do is send you to PT. Your problem may also not really be in your shoulder... it could be coming from your neck (as is the majority of my shoulder pain).

I have found that the Dr doesn't matter nearly as much as the Therapists as you only see the Dr once in a while but the Therapist you will see on a regular basis (maybe 2-3 times a week at first). The Therapists at Town Center in Centreville are friendly, patient, caring, and most importantly they LISTEN and honestly try to make your progress consistent while not putting you in any additional pain. I LOVE them!

Good luck.

I would like to recommend Dr. Highfill. He set my daughter's broken arm which required pins and so outpatient surgery and was very attentive and gave a high level of personal care and attention. He is not one of those in and out doctors or one who brushes aside the concerns of the patient. Good Luck!
