I am looking for an OB( female preferred) / Pediatrician/ & hospital in Burbank. I currently have Kaiser Sunset but live right near St Joe's and an thinking of switching to anthem Blue Cross HMO. I really would like a female OB but will settle for a male if necessary. I also really want a doctor and hospital that will support natural unmediated childbirth. I keep hearing St. Joe's is not the top recommended for this but it's so close. Am I better off at Kaiser or can someone suggest a good female OB in Burbank and maybe give me some tips on St Joe's for a natural childbirth. Also any info on doulas would be helpful as well. This is my first, and it's a boy! We are in our 5th month and really looking to make a final decision but being new to the area it has been terribly hard to get recommendations. Any help would be so appreciated!!!

So What Happened?

Thanks folks! This is very helpful information. I have heard many deterring stories about St Joe's and even though I could walk there in a few minutes, it doesn't seem worth it given what people tell me. It is very helpful for us to hear about Kaiser in a positive light as well. I have also heard good things about Glendale Adventist but would have to change insurance to have that hospital. Does anyone know if it is better than Kaiser? The one thing that concerns me about Kaiser is that you have no idea who will deliver you, however the Sunset hospital does seem fantastic. Has Kaiser been open to having a doula in the room as well? I am very interested in getting a doula. At what point should one hire a doula? Is it something that is best placed a few weeks before a birth or are there other things that a doula can help with in the months prior? We are 5 months now. Thanks everyone for such great and useful advice. i very much appreciate your time.

Definitely stay with Kaiser! I had a great experience with Kaiser in Oct and highly recommend you stay with them if you want to birth naturally. My request to do so was never second guessed or looked down upon. They were wonderful with me. They also greatly encourage breast feeding. A lactation consultant will stop by your room once you are out of the birthing room to make sure things are going okay and answer any questions you may have. It was all so very helpful for me!

Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your son :)

I have been a doula for 15 years and have attended many births at both of those hospitals and can tell you that Kaiser Sunset is definitely a MUCH better choice than St. Joe's! St. Joe's has some hospital protocols that make it extremely difficult to have a natural birth, including not being allowed out of bed after your bag or waters has released or after you are in active labor! There are a few great nurses there who will allow you to break the rules, but there's no guarantee that you'll be lucky enough to get one of them!

The midwives at Kaiser Sunset are great with natural unmedicated childbirth and, even if you don't get one of the midwives, the doctors work on a schedule, which means that if your labor is "not progressing fast enough" they don't care because their shift will be over and someone else will take over.

I'm happy to help you find a great doula. I'm the Membership Director for DASC (Doulas Association of Southern California) and we have almost 300 members and I know most of them personally :)

Happy Birthing,

T.

If you want a natural unmedicated birth your best option is to hire a midwife and stay at home. Research has proven that for healthy mothers it is safer and healthier for you to be at home. I have had 2 fabulous homebirths. PM me if you would like more information.

Congrats, M.! I live in Burbank and struggled to find an OB when I was pregnant a few years ago. I interviewed everyone! I really didn't like any of the female OBs. I loved Dr. Pearson. He ended up being really wonderful, and I hear he has a new female partner. If he trusts her enough, I would too. At least worth checking out. The office line is ###-###-####. I think her name is Dr. Sophie, but I'm not sure if that is a first or last name.
