Need a Better Health Insurance Plan

Hi Moms,

My husband is a consultant in a company of two people - him and his boss. The problem is that his employer does not provide health insurance. We currently are self-insured with Blue Cross/Blue Shield with a high deductible of $2500/per family member. We just got another notice of an increase from $1200/every two months to 1400. Because of this high deductible, the insurance company has not had to pay for any of our doctor visits or prescriptions. The only thing they do is process the paperwork. Is anyone else out there self-insured? If so, are you happy with your insurance company and provider? Do you have any recommendations? I know that rising health costs are causing this to happen but I thought there might be a better solution. Thanks,
D.

You should apply for all kids through the state of Illinois, as long as you live in Illinois, all kids are accepted and based on income you have a monthly payment of like 40 around there and a copay and things like that but it is better than the costs of BCBS. You get good doctors and hosptials, my daughters both have kidney problems and they see specialists out of childen's memorial. You might even be able to apply online. This is the single best thing Blagovich did, that an preschool for all in public school, which I am using also!!!
Hope this helped

Stick with BlueCross!!!!I know they may cost a bit more but they are so reliable and dependable. I have had several different policies (between my husband's job and mine) and BlueCross has been the best as far as settling claims. We have gone through so much red tape with other companies. I hope I never lose BlueCross insurance!

Diana,

I would be happy to help you and your family obtain more affordable and better health insurance. My company is located in Forest Park and we frequently work with people in your situation.

Please contact me at ###-###-#### if I can be of assistance. You can also visit at my website www.wfinancialservices.com and click on the insurance tab to obtain some quotes and information.

With a deductible as high as you are currently at, you may want to consider a HSA (health savings account) compatible plan which allows for some tax deductions. They are available through several companies including BCBS. You could also look into Humana for similar coverage to BCBS at a lower premium.

Please contact me at your convenience to see if I can assist you further!

Sincerely,
Jessica

My dh and I work together for our small company. One of the things we considered was a major medical policy with a high deductible and a health savings account. That is what we are considering. Basically you need to have an insurance that only pays for the big stuff; emergency room, hospitalization etc. Then you have a savings account that is non-taxable that reimburses you for uncovered medical expenses. It is a nice alternative to regular insurance. Right now, we have insurance thru American Medical Security. They are a pretty good group. We pay about $450 a month for me and my 3 girls. Our deductible is $2000 but we pay only a $40 copay for doctor's offices and if we are hospitalized it has a 2nd,lower deductable which is about $200.00, I believe. We've had them for a year and half and they also pay their claims quickly which is nice. Oh, and I second the advice to stay away from National Association for the Self Employed. I came in contact with them and actually signed up with them and then read all the fine print on their policy. Their agent flat out lied about what they actually paid and didn't.

We used Golden Rule a couple of years ago, when my husband was out of work. It was a single policy but we never had any issues with them covering things, and they were very reasonable.

BC/BS was horrible and had very high deductibles.

Have you checked with INSURANCE.COM?

The url for the health insurance is http://www.insurance.com/Health.aspx

I didn't purchase my HEALTH insurance through them because I have insurance through my new employer (after 3 years without insurance), but I did get my auto insurance through them. You enter in your info and then the site displays quotes from several different companies. I don't know how reasonable the health insurance quotes are -- but with car insurance I ended up saving over $20/mo.

Even if you dont want to purchase insurance through that site, they do have a couple of articles about health insurance -- like "Ten Ways to Cut Your Medical Bills" and "All You need Yo Know About Health Insurance"....

good luck!

Look into Unicare! I was with them independently for a couple years before I went onto my husbands plan through his work (which is Blue Cross Blue Shield HMO but through his work). Unicare was VERY reasonably priced (especially since I didn't need maternity coverage at the time) and I had a real good experience with them. Several friends were also with them at the time and they too were happy with them. Haven't heard anything negative about them. So I would definitely look into Unicare! Best wishes to you!!!

Diana,
I don't have an answer for you, but if someone gives you some information please let me know. My husband and I are self amployed and have no insurance at all. We are the parents of 5 kids, 2 with asthma and myself with high blood pressure. I have looked into looked into these insurance companys that say they are for the self employed such as the NASE. National Association for the Self Employed. We tried them years ago. NO NOT GET INVOLVED WITH THEM. They are a farce. I even saw them on 20/20 one day with other parents that had problems with there service. Being self pay when you go to the doctor and then prescriptions on top of it is very costly, but from what I have been researching so is medical insurance. I did try to apply for the all kids medical insurance offered by the state just so I would have something for the younger kids, but of course, we make too much money. What do you do? Let me know if you hear anything.

Diana:

Try HumanaOne. They offer a variety of deductibles. Most of their plans offer an office visit copay as well as a drug card. Hope it helps.

Hi Diana!
My husband also owns his wn business and we use BC/BS, but we have $1000 deduct. We found it was cheaper for me to have my own plan from them with maternity and he and our son to have a seperate plan than to add me to his when I quit work. Apparently the maternity makes each part of the plan go way up--not just you for some odd reason. For each policy we could chose the deductible that we needed. We saved some money doimg it this way! Hope this helps!
