My oldest daughter and her two children are in an unsafe circumstance and need to move back in with us. Between her apartment and our home we need to get rid of a quite a bit of furniture FAST - don't really have time to sell, so would like to give away. Do any of you know organizations that will take donations of large furniture items like couches, tables, beds? They'd need to come pick it up and haul away. Thanks for any help.

Salvation Army takes stuff as long as it's in reasonable condition. I think the number is 1 800 SA TRUCK.
They will come to you and take it away. I've done it before and had no problem with them taking an old coffee table I had.
Hope this helps.

What a great mom!

Try the Salvation Army or Out of the Closet. They take everything except beds. For that you might try 1 800 got junk. Good luck!

Go to freecycle.org and sign up within your community. You would post a message such as OFFER: Couch in the subject line then a description in the message line...It works great if your looking for things or need to de-clutter your houses.

Hi M.,

Having recently moved and having to rearrange our furniture, I have called the Salvation Army on 2 occasions and they have come and taken away a couch, entertainment center and dresser and were very grateful for the donation. Hope this helps, they were out within a couple of days of the call too!

Best wishes, A.

I would also recommend Freecycle. It's free to join. You can post an offer of what you want to get rid of, as well as a wanted ad for things you are looking for. Anyone, who is a member of the Freecycle group you join, will get an email of your offer or wanted. If they are interested, they will email you back. You decide which interested party you will give your item to and tell them where to pick it up. You can specify that you need something picked up right away. It's a great way to keep useable items out of the landfills.

We just recently moved from a huge house in Florida back to California into half the size of our Florida house (for more money, of course!) We needed the tax write off, and called the Salvation Army. They came and took everything for us.

Usually the salvation army will come. However, sometimes they are picky about the quality of the items. If they won't take it just post an ad on craigslist under the "free" section. Those people will take anything and they come within hours.

I know the Salvation Army has some restrictions on furniture, but have you thought of just posting on craigslist.com? I'm sure you could get rid of everything quickly if you really just wanted to give it away, or sell for a minimal price.

Contact your local police department I am sure they would know of several families who would be in need of furniture - especially the battered women's and childrens homes! And I know they would be more than happy to come pick it up as well! There are also several churches that will come pick up furniture for families in their area that need it. I am also sure that the Fire Dept might know of some too. But growing up our family worked thru the Police Dept. so I know they do, and my husband says that as the son of a retired Deputy Sheriff and Grandfather who retired from the Fire Dept he saw it all of the time as well, plus we see it at church as well. Good Luck to you and your family .. esp your daughter and her family!

Try freecycle.com. You list what you have and what city you are in and people will respond very quickly if they want it. My experience has been that everyone is very good about picking it up very quickly also, especially if you mention that need in your original listing of what you want to give away.

I know a lot of people use Craigslist.com for a variety of things.

I've seen big trucks for Salvation Army that you could try. Once I've tried freecycle.com I like donating to the Rescue Mission which I think is in Camarillo. I live in Westlake and they still come here to pick things up but I haven't ever had furniture so I don't know if they pick up large items like that.

Hope these help.

I am a member of two non-profit theatre companies (East West Players and Lodestone Theatre Ensemble in Los Angeles) who would love the donation. We would provide you a tax deductible letter and you would be supporting the arts. If you're interested in donating to the arts, let me know. What city are you located?

freecycle.org is a great way to pass things on fast. You post what you have to give away and people e-mail or call you to arrange pick up. From what I have seen most items are picked uo within a few days if not hours.
