Hello. I am pretty sure I am going to use cloth diapers, at least for when we are at home. I am wondering if a service would be a good idea for me, or if I should just wash them myself at home. I am having a hard time finding websites for services in the Royal Oak area and have not found any that list the price. I would like to know the cost (at least a general idea of the cost) before I even call a company. Any advice on cloth diapers, services, etc will be much appriciated!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all of the help! I am going to follow up on the leads and contact a few of you regarding tips, etc. Some have wondered why I am considering this, the #1 reason I am looking into cloth is financial. I do also think that one can limit the chemicals/irritants that the child is exposed to with cloth diapers more than standard disposable. I know there are natural/chemical reduced disposables out there, but they are more expensive. Finally, even environmental groups now say that cloth and disposables are pretty much equal as far as environmental impact, so that's not a factor.
Thanks again!

I also recommend Luving Mamma Diapers

http://www.luvingmammadiapers.com/

I have not used their service, but I bought diapers from them and the service and selection are fantastic. I prefer to do the laundry myself.

BTW, cloth diapers ARE better for the environment. If you look at the study that said the environmental impact was comparable to disposables - the comparasion is 30 cloth diapers to 5 disposable. Never in my worst day of cloth have I ever used 15 diapers! And I don't know anyone who only uses 5 disposables.

If you want to meet other moms using cloth, some great websites are:

hi H. ! i am new to this group and still trying to figure out how to even get around this site, so i hope you get this response ... i've cloth diapered all 5 of mine full time. i don't know of any local services but i am pretty sure there is one in ann arbor ... tree city, i think it's called ? anyway, my babies have all had allergies to one detergent or another so i preferred to wash them myself and know exactly what was used on them ... i live in royal oak also so if you think you'd ever like to meet up and take a look at some cloth dipes in person, i'd be happy to show you my collection - i have a little of everything after doing it so many yrs and all of my kids potty trained by 2 yrs completely so i think the extra laundry was well worth it !

i don't know how to make that little blurb about me show up so i'll just type one in here myself : i'm a social worker and lactation counselor that stays home now, married for 10 yrs, have 5 kids aged 8, 6.5, 3, 2 and 6 mos - 4 boys and a girl, into attachment parenting and homebirthing, cannot wait for spring !!!

Hi H.,
Cloth diapers are actually quite easy.. I wouldn't bother with a service. We'd used them since birth and DS is 14 months now.
Are you planning on breastfeeding? If so, the poops in the beginning are not a big deal.. you can rinse them out or just put them in the washer and they wash out. When the poop gets more solid then you have to dump it in the toilet and spray it out.

Check out this website.. she mom is a WAHM in Troy and you could call and ask for more advice, but the website has a lot of things on it.
Best wishes! If you need any more advice or ideas, you're welcome to PM me.

i wash my own. it's just seems easier b/c my daughter will use the last one before bed (i still use a disposable at night) and then i will throw all of them in the wash. you should check this website out, it has a lot of info...treecitydiapers.com they are out of ann arbor and she's a mom and started this business. there are alot of neat things there too, and a lot of wooden toys. it's a really cool place to check out. hope this helps!!!

I don't know of any diaper services in your area, but if I was going to use cloth diapers I would absolutely use a service. I did want to make the suggestion that you may want to have a plan B in case you find yourself really tired and overwhelmed---most new moms experience even a little bit of that.

If you are choosing cloth for safety/health reasons for your little one...I know that Whole Foods offers a chlorine free diaper. And by the way, a lot of the detergents (even dreft) are chemicals anyhow---along with bleach.

If you are choosing cloth for environmental reasons, I would look into the brands at Whole Foods. They usually have very eco-friendly/environmentally responsible brands that use recycled materials (packaging), etc.

That is just my plan B advice. Big kudos to you for planning on cloth, I could have never handled that on top of everything else. Good luck with everyhting and enjoy your little bundle!

I am in agreement. I have twin boys and we cloth diapered. It was pretty easy, and besides the original expense of the cloth diapers in the beginning, it was pretty cheap in the long run. We used Bumpkins AIO diapers and it was a breeze. I bought the diapers all new and ended up selling them when we were done with each size, abut now in retrospect I wish I would have purchased used dipaers originally instead of investing in the new ones. I took great care of my diapers and they still had plenty of life left in them, for half the original price.

I did cloth from 6 months on. It's easy at that point. The poop is harder and you just let it fall into the toilet. Doing laundry is so simple nowadays - you just throw them in and the machine does the work. Cloth diapers are so advanced now too, I'm sure you've looked into it. I might have done a service for the first few months. My friend used Dydee service and was happy with it. She lived in Southfield. I don't know how much it was though.

I think one of those squirt things by the toilet would be very helpful I used the squirt bottle they sent me home with in the hospital to help me get the poop off into the toilet. Definitely need something like that.

I applaud you for using cloth diapers. It's not that bad at all plus so much better for the baby and the environment.

The general rumor that I have heard is that using a cloth diaper service is not only expensive, but uses more energy in the washing and transport process than disposables. Also, disposables of today are engineered to use less landfill space and/or degrade faster.

They used to be considered a more earth-friendly option but I don't think they are any longer. This probably explains the modern day lack of the Dy-Dee service.
