In terms of hospital, Good Samaritan has the most comfortable and spacious labor and delivery suites, which you are able to stay in througout rest and recovery as well.

I'd highly recommend Women's Healthcare Associates at St. Vincent Medical Center. They have both midwives and MDs. I used a midwife (Helen Welch) for the birth of my son, and she was very supportive of allowing nature to take its course and to only use medical interventions if necessary. I like them because the MDs that work with them are right there with them should any situations require their help.

Hi Mimi!

I don't know if you are open to a home birth, but I love my midwives, and they deliver twins naturally (if, as you said, everything is healthy and normal etc.). This is their website: http://nwmidwives.com/NWCM/Home.html. I highly recommend them. Welcome, and I hope your birth goes beautifully!

congratulations! I am also pregnant with twins, and found that most midwives are not allowed to take me (maybe because I'm also a VBAC? I can't remember if twins alone excluded me from midwifery practices).

There are 3 hospitals in portland with NICUs, and you should probably choose one of those so if there are complications you don't have to transfer (unless you birth at home): OHSU, St. Vincent's, Emmanuel. I had my first baby at St. Vincents. I loved the practitioners at Women's Health Care Associates (I see lots of people have recommended them), but I found St. Vincent's to be a rotten place to try and have a natural birth. It's just not set up for that very well. They're very good at C-Sections and other high intervention stuff, but if you're into natural, it's something to consider. I am going with a different practice this time so I can be at OHSU. I have a perinatologist who is very supportive of my desire to have a natural birth and I can even bring a midwife (Dr. Pereira). Everyone in his practice can deliver twins vaginally, even if the second is breach. OHSU will let you do a natural delivery and they have tubs and everything. They also have midwives on staff. If you don't need a perinatologist, though, you might be better off with a midwife or MD who'se not running the crazy high-risk practice I have to go to.

Good luck!

I just delivered identical twins in September. I moved to Portland when I was 4 months pregnant and was referred to the Northwest Women's Clinic. I went with Dr. Krishna who I love! She was fantastic throughout the pregnancy and very supportive of my desire to deliver naturally. She has delivery rights at Good Samaritan and Providence St. Vincent. I chose to deliver at Providence St. Vincent because of their amazing NICU. Dr. Krishna did an AMAZING job and my twins were both born vaginally minutes apart. Dr. Davis (also from Northwest Women's Clinic) was there in case he was needed to assist in an emergency c-section. Because everything went so smoothly he grabbed our camera and took photos the whole time (some of the best ever)! The staff at Northwest Women's Clinic is FANTASTIC as is the staff at Providence St. Vincent. My twins were both delivered to my chest and never taken from me at all as per my request. They never had to go to the NICU and stayed in the room with us. The staff was amazing and very cooperative and even indulged us when my busy toddler came to visit along with copious amounts of friends and family. I HIGHLY recommend Providence St. Vincent and Dr. Krishna at the Northwest Women's Clinic. They except all kinds of insurance and are really great. Also, Providence St. Vincent has exceptional security and safety standards. Dr. Krishna's number is ###-###-####. They have multiple locations. Best of luck! I hope you love Portland, it's a great place!

I just had my first baby with Dr. Michael Davis at Northwest Women's Clinic and he was born at Good Samaritan. The whole experience was excellent. Dr. Davis really listens and gives great answers. He does not cut episiotomies, which was one of my biggest fears about giving birth, so I was very relieved when he said that. And the whole staff at Good Samaritan was caring and careful with me and the baby. Nothing happened that made me anxious in any way. The Northwest Women's Clinic is supportive of natural birth and they have midwives on staff. Dr. Davis was very cooperative with my desire to work with a doula as well.

I can also highly recommend the Women's Healthcare Associates and also have Helen Welch as my midwife. She's fantastic, as is the entire clinic.

If you are more comfortable with using a regular OB, I was very happy with Meg O' Reiley at OHSU. She was named on the 'Best Doctors in Portland' list last year.

Personally, I prefer the midwife approach to childbirth, in the absence of complications. But as another commenter said, the good thing about Helen's practice is that it's at St. Vincent, which has the best NICU dept. in the state, should anything go wrong.

Dear Mini M,

I am fairly new to Portland Metro area also, but I hear nothing but good things about Providence Hospital. It may be a good idea to check them out. Make an appointment with them and then make your decision.
My sister had twins within a year of giving birth to her baby boy. Her labor was a short 30 minutes for both (because she had already given birth previously) I loved the excitement all at the same time of being nervous, but once they arrived we had nothing but a blast!!
Congratulations!!
look forward to hearing from you!!

If you want a natural childbirth you have to go with midwives! Hospitals such as OHSU, Providence and Emanuel have nurse midwives so you birth in the hospital but have a midwife as your attendant (unless there's a problem then there are excellent OB/GYNs on-call). I birthed both my babies at Emanuel with their midwives. Two very different birth experiences (one natural, one with epidural/forceps delivery by the on-call OB/GYN (who was awesome) - both wonderful! I'd highly recommend the Emanuel midwifery clinic.
By the way, doctors who are affiliated with Good Sam (like Dr Davis) will have to transport you to Emanuel if there are serious complications with your delivery (since Good Sam does not have a neo-natal intensive care unit). Something to keep in mind.

My twins are 10 years old now. I had a great experience with Dr. Arnold Petersen at Adventist Medical Center. He is an experienced, conservative and kind doctor. I spent my last five weeks in the hospital with preeclampsia and the staff was amazing. Providence St. Vincent Hospital and Emmanuel both also have great birthing suites.

Welcome to the Northwest,
S.

I would highly recommend the midwives at Andaluz water birth center. They have a lot of experience providing women with a natural birth with twins. They are located on Naito Parkway just past downtown in SW Portland.
