Hi Mom's-

I need some help. My husband is a carpenter and for the last 10 years has owned his own, (small-2ppl), home remodeling company specializing in basement remodeling. He's crazy talented, (I know-biased..:)), but even that can't help in this economy. Until recently we have been able to eek by, (barely), with many small jobs and having to go back to the early days of doing 'anything': floor installs, window installs, just bathrooms, etc.

We have however, come to the end of our run and currently my H has no work on the horizon, (some estimates out, but nothing signed). We have agreed to do the local home show in March-see what/if that produces and depending on that-close shop in May.

It's sad, it sucks, and I'm so sorry for my H, but he's being great and family first and knows it's time to look for perm work working for someone else.

Here's the thing-there is nothing out there! OMG. I'm having an anxiety attack just writing this. Not only can I not find any carpenter/project manager jobs in our area-but I can't even find decent sites to job search. Or even staffing agencies. Lot's of skilled trades stuff, but that is like machinists, etc. Maybe I'm not using the correct key words when googling....

Anyone out there who's husband or someone does carpentry and knows of niche places to look?

Thank you!

What can I do next?

Job hunting also should go beyond the passive looking at online job ads.

Network like crazy. Spread news of his job search on Facebook, Twitter, wherever. Tell everyone you know -- your hair stylist, your mail carrier, neighbors, etc. -- about his search. You never know who might have a job lead. If he's not on LinkedIn, open an account. Have him search for groups there for carpenters.

Attend meetings for professional groups for carpenters or the construction industry. This is a super way to meet others in the business and learn of job opportunities. Also look for local job hunting support groups. Another way to expand his network of contacts. People there are in active job hunting mode and may learn of openings just right for him.

Best of luck!

Would you all be willing to relocate for something? He'd probably be able to get on a good home building or custom carpentry place in an area that is more developing.

Also, network, he can join in linkedin, maybe contact people he's done jobs with in the past, or a contracters guild. Maybe he can get some work through Lowes or Home Depot or something for now.

For resume and interviewing help and more networking tips, he can get free career counseling through my church, no obligations to attend required.

Try a filter/searching via www.indeed.com.

Indeed.com filters all related jobs from all job sites thru this one website. Where I work office type jobs, they may have focus on trade jobs, too.
