Ok, you crafty Mommas, I bought a plain purple bedspread at a garage sal this past weekend. My daughter is going to be 5 next week and she loves purple!! I wanted to surprise her by decorating it up a little but I am at a loss as to how. I was thinking of sewing ribbons or something on it but not sure what to do. Do you crafty mommas have any suggestions??
Thank you for the help!!

What can I do next?

You can tie ribbons like you said and sew them on or I bought some ribbons that were made in to flowers from the craft store and sewed them on my daughters bedspread, it was super cute.

Good luck!

There's tons of things you can do......How crafty are you? You can glue on rhinestones, use the metal stud machine to make designs, you can do the paint thing like suggested below.....you can sew ANYTHING on it! If you have a color printer, you can print out a transfer of a picture or two that she likes and transfer it onto the pic.....remember the background will be purple!! You can sew buttons on it, you could even do wall hangings that are cloth, but small......

Go to a dollar store and start looking around......go to a cloth store too......ask them for ideas as well, they know what will make things stick and not stick the best......

Good Luck and what an awesome idea.

If she is going to use it as a cover at night I would stay away from gluing things on. Fabric paints and pens if you have drawing talents , use of stencils or sewing on wide ribbons I would use clear thread on the needle and a color similar to the ribbon in the bobbin use a longer stitch length to go through the thickness. You will have to sew both edges of the ribbon. One more thing is put darker or lighter purple squares or circles of fabric on top by sewing around the edges using a short zigzag stitch or by using "wonder under" it double sided iron on stuff then put paint around the edges or sew it too. Good luck sounds like a fun project.

my first though was of a little tote bag that my daughter and i decorated for her to take to preschool, it was purple too. I found iron on patches of cute flower shaped at either Walmart, Micheals or JoAnne's for around $5 and just ironed them on. you would probably be able to sew them on by hand if the quilt was too thick.

I can also visualize little grosgrain bows sewn on randomly. you would need alot though like 30 or so and you would need ones the size of a hairbow, 2-3 inches, i know they sell smaller ones that are pre-bowed to put on your homemade cards, i don't know about the big ones.

Another idea if the bedspread is just too daunting is to get one or two pillowcases and decorate them to give with the plain purple bedspread. that would be a lot easier to decorate because of the thinness, in my opinion.
Have FUN!!!

What using buttons to make the corners of square pattern, like an old fashioned yarn tied quilt?
Hard to explain what I mean, and I don't know what kind of fabric you are dealing with. But if you look up "yarn tied quilt" on Google images, you can find some pictures. I just thought using buttons would be easier than yarn or ribbon, because you could just sew them on.

I like getting scraps from like, hancock and joann's (they have sections where they put the remnants of fabric) and then make designs on pillows for my daughter. I did one with her full name in different fabric letters and one with flowers and butterflies. You could probably do the same with felt.

Cover the bed in flowers! (or hearts, stars, etc.) Outline large flowers with sewn-on ribbon. Does that make sense? I can picture it, but can't explain it! Singe the ends with a lighter or match so they don't fray. Sew on ribbons (ironing or gluing them...they'll probably fall off after a few washings). as the outline of large flowers. You could also sew an extra wide ribbon as trim along the whole outer edge of the quilt.

Well, the easiest thing to do would be to get some fabric paint (it comes in pens now so very easy to use) and some stencils of girlie shapes or letters. Then do her name and some pictures on the comforter with the paint.
