How about "What inspired you to serve your country?"
As a former Navy enlistee, I think this question would provide a myriad of answers, and would be appreciated. It goes beyond the surface.
I need help coming up with questions to ask "troops" for a school project.
Example : What is your favriote sport ? What was your most memorable vacation spot ? How long have you been in the service ? What is your favriote snacks or candy ?
Can you ladies help me come up with some questions to ask these hard working military , army, navy ect... THANKS !

What's the first meal that you want to have when you get back home? Who's your favorite actor/actress? Which movie can you watch over and over? What was your first concert? What was the last book that you read? What's your favorite website? What strange food have you ever tried? Pepsi or Coke?
HOW old is the student that this questionnaire is for? A 2nd grader would ask different questions than a high school student.
I would ask questions having to do with the military
What branch of the service are you in?
What rank are you?
Where have you been stationed?
Where would you like to be stationed next?
What do you do in the military?
Have you been in a war zone?
What do you enjoy the most about military life?
What's your favoirte jelly on a pbj?
How old were you the first time you remember getting in some trouble?
What is your first best friends name? Do you still talk to this person? How long have you known him/her?
What was your first car?
What kind and what is the name of your first pet?
What is the thing that makes you feel the most at-home when you are away?
What is the best way for you to feel "caught-up" on family events when you get home? (ie scrapbooks, videos, pictures)
What is your favorite place you've seen while in the service and why?
Where is the first place you want to eat when you are in your home town?
What is your favorite part of being the armed forces?
