This is really a question for my sister in law. My niece is 6 months old and my sister in law still breastfeeds.Sometimes she pumps and the baby will drink out of the bottle fine. She is about to start back to work and for the last month she has tried to get the baby to take formula. She started with just a little mixed with the breastmilk and the baby threw up numerous times. She has tried this every couple days and everytime is the same result. In fact she wont drink anything other than breastmilk , they have tried juice and she throws up and she just last week tried to feed her some carrots and she gagged untill she got sick.

I breastfeed two of my three boys and never had this problem and she also has two other girls that she breastfeed and didnt have this happen. Any advice would be welcome.

What can I do next?

The baby might be allergic to the protiens in cow's milk (formula) you might try soy or continue pumping (which is the best). The child also may not be ready for solids. 6 months isn't the magical month it is just a guide when you can try solids. If the child isn't taking them her digestive tract may not be ready. Juice also shouldn't be given until the child is much older, it has as much sugar as soda and can make them sick.

Just an FYI babies aren't "lactose intollerant" lactose is in breastmilk it is the sugar in all milks. They are allergic to the proteins in cow's milk (whey).

I agree she is most likely lactose intolerant.. Have her to speak to the Dr for formula suggestions.. Mybaby breast fed and now does Isomil..He eats fruit, and veggie baby food. As far as the juice she just may not like the flavor... Good luck to you all

Hello,
Carnation makes a formula(supplement) that is very gentle on little stomachs. I found that because breast milk is sweeter that others, that I would mix about 1-2 tbsp PASTURIZEDD apple juice in to her bottles of formula and she would drink it well. She did not like t he taste without it. Good Luck.
You also might take her to doctor and check for reflux.

Shawana,
Hi my name is R..I am a mother of two.I think she might need to take the baby for some test to see if she is lactose intolerant.Sometimes this is the case. She may want to try lactose free formula. With the other foods I am not sure.I would suggest taking baby to doctor to see if something is wrong.Sorry I can't be better help to you.Good luck.

Try a different formula. She might be allergic to that one. My sone was a preme. I pumped and fed because he never latched on I didn't produce enough milk so I cut it with Carnation Good Start. He had a differnt mixture each day. Depemding on what I could produce. I also took Fenugreek to increase my producition. But your sister-in-law should be able to pump at work. They have to provide a place at work. It refrigerates for 24 hrs. and freezes for 6 months. If she did that maybe she wouldn't have to give any formula.

It's probably the formula. I switched my son over to Similac Lactose Free formula pretty early on and that helped alot. My nephew had to go on Alimentum. At the peditrician, they usually have some small samples of the various formulas, so that you can try them without having to spend a fortune. Also, have your sister register at Similac https://welcomeaddition.com/joinnow.aspx for the savings. Enfamil has a similar program. They mail you checks/coupons for $10, then a couple of $5's for a while. It really helps when the baby starts going through mega containers every few days :).

From my point of view I think that she should take it as a "blessing" in disguise. So many mommies can't breastfeed or get their children to nurse.

The puking part is odd though, maybe the baby does have lactose intolerance. However, my best suggestion would be for her to continue to pump and give her child breastmilk via the bottle (when she isn't around).

As far as the other foods she may just not be ready. Children have a very strong gag reflex at that age and that is their only defense to choking. My son had the same issue and the doctor said it occured because he was not ready for solids. He said that too many mommies push them too soon. He suggested waiting until seven or eight months to try it again. My son is now a year old and once I took the doc's advice everything turned out fine and now he loves to eat all his veggies. Good luck to her.

My son was not even interested in baby food all that much until around 7-8 mths....It doctor didnt seemed worried...and now he eats everything in sight...Her baby though will probably turn down anything but breastmilk from her because she wants the breastmilk...Is there anyone that can give her the juice or formula? Or perhaps she could do the bottles half formula and half breastmilk that worked for me as well. Hope any of this helps
