Need Help Staying Motivated to Work Out

I've been trying to lose weight for a while now and I keep coming across the same problem. I will be going strong for the first couple of weeks and then I just fall into a rut and it feels like it's impossible to motivate myself to keep working out. So needless to say I keep putting back on the weight I lose. I've tried walking, doing Billy Blanks workouts, running.... Nothing seems to keep me motivated. I see the difference in my appearance after a couple weeks but that doesn't even serve to motivate me. I'm not sure how to keep myself in the right mindset. I can't join a gym right now because I really can't afford it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much everyone for the great advice. I started writing it on my calendar so that I see it all the time. I actually do feel bad if I don't write something about working out on there. So far it's been working. I even had to force myself a couple times....most of the reason was just so I could have something to write on the calendar. LOL! I guess the hardest part is just starting out and keeping going. Once you get in a groove I'm sure it gets way easier. I don't think there are any personal trainers in the part of Australia I'm gong to (it's basically in the middle of nowhere) but I will definitely see. Thanks again everyone.

I suggest finding a workout/diet partner. That way it will be harder to back out. I always have more success and stay motivated if I am keeping somebody else motivated.
Good Luck!

Working out is more of a mindset in the beginning. Once your mind and body agrees exercise is good for both, you are then able to stick to a routine and do all that you can to keep going. Motivation will not be a problem.

What helps is 1) writing it down on your calendar, same as any other important event; 2)placing it top on your "to do" list (read Priority); and, if possible, 3)find a workout partner, perhaps start with a walking routine (rain or shine); finally, my personal favorite, 4)each and every night as you rest your head on the pillow right before you fall asleep say to yourself out loud "It is easy for me to tone and condition my body.", "My body easily craves exercise.", or something similar, but you get the picture ;}

R.-

Your request caught my eye. I do not have much advice on the workout side, however, we just moved back from Australia 9 months ago- we were there for almost three years. I would love to share our experiences with you and share any advice you might wish to receive (our children were 2 and 5 when we moved over and we had a third baby while we were there!)

Hi R.! One thing that helps me stay on track is to work out with someone else, like a girlfriend or my husband. It keeps me accountable, and even on the days when I don't feel like it I know someone else is counting on me to be there. Also, don't beat yourself up over the weight. Focus instead on feeling good and being healthy and you'll be just fine.

You'll find once you get over the hump of going to work out even on the days when you don't feel like it, it gets easier and easier to keep going. I also reward myself with little things when I hit milestones (like getting back in to my pre-pregnancy jeans!). I got my nails done- quick 20 minute trip, not very expensive, but still a little reward for my hard work.

Best of luck in Australia!

Hi R., you have gotten some great responses so I'll give you another perspective. My husband has felt like you do for years.. he just couldn't stay on track.. While my weight loss has always been successful, using much of the advice you have already received. But he had weeks of motivation.. 15-20 pounds gone.. and he'd just eat again and gain more.Last week he was 100 pounds over weight, today he is only 85 pounds overweight. What did he do? lap band surgery.. Do I suggest this for you ABSOLUTELY NOT!! but I can tell you some things that he is doing that will keep the weight off you while you are unmotivated. protein shakes.. vanilla.. and then you put jello packets in there (sugar free); all types-- one day strawberry, next pistachio, banana creme.. He absolutely loves it and admits that maybe this would have worked without the surgery. So theres my advice.. variety of shakes along with the fruits you like, the cereal you like-- I am a honey nut cheerios fiend, even a little bit of exercise is better than none.. and eat dinner with your family. Anyhow, just because you have a bout of "lazy", doesn't mean you have to regain the weight... just eat right that week.. get back on track the next. Good luck

Hi R.

I would love to introduce you to a work out bar that you eat 15 min. before you do any type of excercise (even chasing the kids around the yard or park or going for a walk). There is no other bar like this one on the market! It's the first and only patented bar that turns fat into fuel!! World famous athlete's and olympians are eating these bars, that by the way taste great!! These bars come in several different flavors and will turn your fat into energy!

Please email me @ ____@____.com for some more info!!

Trust me, you won't me disappointed!!

Can we get a motivation pill out there please???
I have the same problem and it seems the world is against me. I finally decide to join a gym but my kids wont stay in the childcare. So then I decide to work out when hubby gets home from work: he then works late or he needs to go to the gym. Time runs out for me. On days I might actually get a chance to go somthing else comes up. I have a hard time getting to the gym just 2x a week. So lack of motivation isnt helping either when the whole world is against me. Oh did I mention I have a foot condition that keeps flaring up if I work out 3x a week. And that now I have a rash on both legs that flares up when I sweat?.....Shoot me now.
I have NO gumption or motivation and it sucks doesnt it. I feel your pain. The only advice I can offer you is to realize this is the best thing you can do for yourself and you HAVE to do it so you can be around for your kids in the long run. HAve you tried a workout buddy to hold you accountable via a phone call or email. Or set yourself a reasonable goal and then reward yourself.
Ive just come to grips w/ my health and know that if I am to avoid diabetes thats knocking down my door I have NO other choice than to lose weight. Ive been procrastinating for 3yrs now. It affected my love life as well and that was my final straw. If dh doesnt want me after I lose the weight then the problem is HIS and he must seek help. (thats another story)
I joined the YMCA, they go by your income.
I am sorry I cant sendyou some motivation by mail, but you have to force yourself to do it knowing its going to pay off in the long run. HTH. and GL.

There is a book I love to get me back in "Work-out" mode and thanks for the reminder! I have to get it back out! LOL
It's called "8-minutes in the morning" and it really does work! You can do it on its own or add a walking program and it really does only take 8 minutes. It's a strengthening workout that pairs 2 exercises each day. The layout is easy (Week 1 Day 1, Week 1 Day 2) By the end of the first week, I am always amazed at the added strength I have and the energy as well. I don't want to sound like an advertisement for a book, but it has helped me a lot and can help at whatever fitness level you are at. Once I get good at them, I add weights. I'm sure the library has the book too.
Good luck!

R.,

Have you tried vaying your workout routine. Instead of doing the same thing daily, try running one day, walking the next, Taebo the next, etc. Not only does it cure your boredom, it also keeps your body guessing whatis next, so your muscles don't get used to one thing. It keeps your workouts varied and keeps you from plateauing!
