Need Help Picking First Theatrical Movie for Almost 4 Year Old

Hello mamas! This is my first time putting a request out. I have a little girl who will be 4 in September. She has been acting out and a little jealous of her 15 month old brother lately and her father and I feel that she needs a day with Mommy and Daddy to herself. So, we are off on Monday for the holiday and decided to make that "Lily Day" (that's her name :o) ). We would like to take her to her first movie in a theater. She loves movies and shouldn't have any problem sitting still. My question is: What movie should we take her to see? I was thinking Ice Age, but there is also Up, Night at the Museum, and Monsters vs. Aliens (none of which we have seen). Please help me pick an appropriate movie that will keep her attention and she will enjoy. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

So What Happened?

Thank you very much to everyone for all the great advice and suggestions! We saw Ice Age and she loved it! Her father & I enjoyed it was well. She did pretty well in the theater. She just got fidgety for about the last 20-30 minutes. Thank you again for all your help. You Mamas (& Dadas) rock!

I would NOT take her to Up. Though it's a cartoon, yet it is for adults - too sad/ slow for children.

I went to see Up with my little. It has a lot of animation, especially the balloon scene. I think that this would most likely hold her attention.

My son is 4 years old. We have been to all of the movies and out of all of them I think he enjoyed "Up" the best. Monsters vs. Aliens, he was scared. He liked Ice Age but was scared in some of the parts, I didn't really care for this movie and neither did my 11 year old. Night of the Museum was good and he did sit through it but I just really feel that Up was the best movie for him. We didn't do the 3-D version because he just won't wear the glasses.

My kids are 10 and 12 and they loved "UP" the most. "Monsters vs Aliens" would be their 2nd choice. Ice Age has some intense moments where big dinosaurs are chasing the favorite characters. This might be scary for a younger child, but I really enjoyed the movie. My kids liked "Night at the Museum" but I was bored. Museum also has this intense moment where this army of people with bird heads is conjured from the "underworld"; that might also be too scary for someone as young as your daughter.

Have fun with your movie trip! We started taking our 3 1/2 year old to the movies as a reward/treat since her little brother came along earlier this year. We just saw Ice Age yesterday and she absolutly loved it! My husband also said it seemed to be her favorite by far. However, my hubby and I weren't impressed by it at all. We saw Up last month and although I loved it, she was restless during several parts and didn't talk much about it afterwards. Monsters vs. Aliens was pretty violent, but we all 3 liked it. We can offer anything blue to her and say, "Blue like Bob" and she instantly loves it. We have not seen Museum yet.
Before a movie trip we show our daughter the trailer off of YouTube. She gets all excited and knows what we are seeing before hand. You could show her all the trailers and let her decide.
Also, 3D is a hit or miss with us. She wears sunglasses all the time, but will not keep those 3D glasses on. Have fun!

I would consider what you already let her watch, and then go to the IMDb(just put that in your internet search engine).

I am supposing all you mentioned will have some adult humor, impending danger and violence(I think most do). I.e aliens getting shot at...Ice Age has typically had some scary creatures and arguing beasts bent on killing the sloth. Night at museum, depending on the kid...some kids only want to watch animation.
Some kids have more violent tendencies and will imitate what they watch in a more intense manner.

I know some places have theaters that have more educational stuff...like IMAX films...documentaries of critters, etc. Some replay older movies at matinee times.

Good luck deciding,

L.

I took my son who just turned three to "Up" as his first theater movie. He LOVED it from beginning to end and the story is nice for adults as well as children. We saw it when it came out in May and my mostly non-verbal child is still talking about the "Up, Up, Up" movie and his little face just lights up when we mention it. He got a little scared in a couple of places, but it did not detract from his overall love of the movie.

We saw the 2D version thinking 3D would be a bit much for him at this point. All of us loved it. Whatever you choose - have fun! :)

We have seen all 3 animated movies and UP was the best for us and our 3+ year old daughter.

Our order of preference:
UP
Ice Age
Aliens vs Monsters

We didn't do 3D. She prefers the animated and I think museum would be tough since it isn't a light/bright film I could see our daughter falling asleep.

We saw UP in 3-D. The 3-D was awesome there was some good humor, but the storyline was very sad at times. Plus someone dies (think of bambi, classic disney, gotta get the sad out of the way in the beginning to form attachment with main character) and the little girl next to me was asking her mom what happened and why she was no longer in the movie...not sure how old she was but I think after a few more minutes she forgot all about it and enjoyed the movie.

Monsters vs. Aliens in 3-D was good too. Funny, not sad, but I could see how little ones could think it was scary. It is about a girl finding her worth and being different isn't all that bad.

Can't comment on Ice Age (but I liked the first two) or Museum (liked the first one). I hope you have a wonderful Lily day.

hello, just wanted to let you know i would recommend UP we took my 3yr old to the movies for the first time also. she loved it. we have not tried ice age yet, but i figure that would be a good one to watch also since my daughter loved the first two on dvd. i would not recommend night at the museum quite yet though it seems to target kids a bit older.
