Need Help on Sippy Cups for a 1-Year Old

My son recently turned one and I have been trying to get him to use a sippy cup. He would much rather have the bottle. Does anyone have any suggestions on which sippy cup they have tried that worked? He is getting ready to start daycare and needs to be off the bottle.
Thanks

Get the nuby sippy cup. has a soft silicone top so it's closer to a bottle. Hide all the bottles so he doesn't see them and see if he will take the sippy cup after he realizes that's his only option. If he starts chewing the cup up after a while then try the hard plastic top cups and playtex are the best ones for not leaking in those. They do leak with soda or other acidic drinks but for milk, juice, and water they don't leak and you can buy replacement parts for them. Usually babies will get over the bottle if they don't see it again. Out of sight out of mind thing. It worked for me and they may have fussed a day or 2 (usually at bedtime) but after that they were completely off the bottle. The longer they have it the more attached they get and harder to get off of it.

I feel for you. I have an 11 month old who wouldn't have anything to do with sippy cups. She was a beast when she went from breast to bottle to begin with, so I was VERY worried about this. We got a couple of teh born free cups. There are two stages. The first stage, she took to right away, and loved it. In no time or fuss at all, she was totally off the bottle. We then got the second satge with the harder nipple. She is a pro now with both. It amazed me. I know all kids are unique, but I would recommend getting on eto try if you have tried others. (We tried 8 different types with no success first)

It's really a matter of preference... so you might have to just try a few before you find one he likes. Nuby has a really soft breast-like sippy cup he might like, it's kind of like a nipple. Maybe try the sippies with the soft spout first and then after he gets used to it move up to the harder spouts.

If you eliminate the bottle completely it might be easier. That way he won't be "holding out" for his bottle, and he'll know that the sippy is his only option. You can also try putting something sweet in it to make sure he tries drinking out of it, like watered down juice, or maybe some whole milk with a little bit of Ovaltine.

Nubby brand cups have worked great since they are silicone soft like a nipple. I have had daycare in our home for over 10 years and these have worked the best for all the kids transitioning. It may take a couple of days/weeks but it will work. It is helpful to have both the same type of cup at home and childcare. It is so easy to give in to the bottle, don't have bottles in plain sight so they can see. Keep the sippy cups insight for them to see, so they can start making that choice for themselves when they are thirsty.

HI, M.. I would try one with handles first and then move to one more similar to a regular cup. You may ask what kind they use at his daycare, so he can learn on the same kind. Your son may just want the comfort of the bottle still. Talk up the fact that you all use cups and see if that helps ease the transition. I am sure he wants to do things he sees his big brother doing. Good Luck!

My daughter didn't really take to regular sippy cups either, though I tried several different types. Then we tried a straw sippy cup and she started drinking from that almost immediately. Perhaps it was because she always saw me drinking out of that big cup with a straw that you get in the hospital and wanted to do the same, I'm not sure, but it worked for us...

The Playtex cups are the best for not leaking. My sister & I both use them. I had been trying to get my daughter interested in the sippy starting at 9 months, just to get her used to it...no go. But once she got moved to the 1 yr old room at her daycare, within three days of seeing the other kids use the sippy, she started drinking from it immediately. She is 13 months and still gets a good-night bottle, so we aren't totally there yet. But her daytime & evening meal drinks (both water & milk) are from the sippy.

I remember I was concerned about this with my daughter, first born, she is ll now. I asked her doctor, she said..."remove the bottle from the kitchen and offer milk in any sippy cup. When she gets thirsty she will drink." I did what the doctor said and eventually, after a day or 2, she was drinking from her cup. I did the same for my son and he never had a problem either. I never offered the bottle again, even when they got sick, and I never had problems. Maybe this is rare?
