Need Help Learning How to Do Simple Girly Hair Stuff!

I grew up in a house full of men and never learned how to do girly stuff, like hair, makeup, and nails. My daughter is 3 and has unruly hair and I NEED to be able to do things to style it, like putting it back in barrettes, or up in a ponytail, pigtails, etc. But I have NO CLUE how to do it, and I'm always messing it up when I try. My husband is okay at it, but she really needs someone who has a clue! Plus I want to be able to teach her how to do those things for herself... But first I have to learn how!

Is there a book or a course that teaches this sort of thing, like "basic hairstyles for girls" or "how to raise a girly girl"? I don't have enough "girly" friends with daughters who could help me out here, or else they're too busy with their own little ones.

What can I do next?

I have a little girl who will be 3 in December - she has the wildest curly hair! Of course, she doesn't tolerate a headband - the quickest & easiest hair tamer, but will sit through me french braiding pigtails! Can we say high maintenance in the making?! Ha!

Anyway - a big - HUGE - help is detangler...any of the Johnson & Johnsons works great. If her hair doesn't want to brush back, spray it down with detangler and then brush. Damp hair is much more compliant than dry hair.

Pig tails seems to go in easier than a single pony tail for me (go figure). First - turn on Noggin, give her a book or whatever that will keep her reasonably still & happy for 5 minutes. Damp her hair down with detangler and brush all the tangles out. Roughly divide her hair down the center (again, when the hair is damp with detangler - this is easy to do, not so much when it's dry). A comb works best for dividing the hair as it "draws" a tighter line. Brush each side up into a little pigtail and done!

Want her hair down? First, find her 5 minute distraction. Spray her head down with detangler, comb out all the tangles, if she doesn't have a natural part (where her hair lays down naturally to one side or the other) make a small part just above the eye (either eye). Take a barette a sweep up the "thicker" side of hair until it's snug, but not overloaded and clip. To get an idea of where the barette goes, lightly pinch her hair with you fingers, then place the barette just above where you've pinched. You can do the other side if you want - but it's optional. Done!

I'm in the Wylie area at times visiting my parents and would be happy to meet up somewhere for the girls to play and I can show you some tricks of the trade. I grew up in a houseful of girls...so, I've seen it all! :) Good luck!

There is a book at Barnes and Noble called American Girl that teaches about hair, etc. Also, if you are in the HEB area, (North Richland Hills), I can show you some tips for her too if you want. We could get our girls together for a play date since both of our girls are 3. You can also google hair styles and tips for girls online. Braids are easy once you know how oh and detangling spray works great so when you are fixing her hair it doesn't hurt.

How about next time you take her in for a hair cut you ask her hairdresser to show you a cute style. Maybe one time she could show you how to braid. Or you could bring in a clip and she could show you how to use it with her hair. I have often thought of doing that with my daughter too. Good luck!

I do recommend the American Girl book on hair. I have 3 girls and my girls get bored with ponytails and headbands so I get a few ideas out of the book to do something different to their hair. It explains things easily that my oldest(8 yrsold) sometimes does her hair herself. It may not be perfect but at least she can follow the directions and do it herself.
