My 6 yr old has long straigh fine hair and we both hate it when it's time to comb her hair after a bath. I'd like to know if anyone uses natural hair products that will smooth out her hair and take away the tangles. I have curly fine hair and also would like a natural shampoo for me. I have tried some natural shampoos but their conditioners do not work for me. I'm trying to stay away from products that have parabens & other chemicals. Any recommendations?

What can I do next?

You can this for a couple of weeks and see how it works for you. Before "shampoos" people used baking soda to clean their scalps and then an apple cider vinegar rinse. It works really well on my sons very fine hair. It's probably the most natural way you can go.

I love this stuff! It is very natural and very effective. It is pricey though. I think they sell it at Sephora. com and at the Sephora at Scottsdale Mall. They have a volumizing spray that puffs up my hair. I won a free basket of this line and love it all.

Read your product's ingredient list. Any alcohol is drying your hair. Look into Dynamite natural shampoo and conditioner. It's the best thing I have ever found for my hair. It's not cheap but it lasts a long time and using it helps you reduce your need to shampoo more often than every couple days. Plus it's natural so you won't continue to absorb all the toxic ingredients that are in other products. You can only get it through an authorized distributor so check out my friend at: www.grandadventuresranch.com for information on ordering.

Purology has a line for fine hair and it does not have the harsh cemical in it. It is pricey, but Sally's Beauty Supply sells a generic brand that is much cheaper. I bought 33oz bottles Memorial Day weekend of 2008 and am still using the same bottles. It doesn't take much of either product. I called around and found a few salons that had it for 20% off. Ulta carries it and I think you can use thier coupons on it too.

Hi M.,
I used to have the opposite problem. My daughter has wavy thick hair. She hates getting it brushed.

Anyway I started taking her to jungle cuts and they sell Circle Of Friends hair products. It is designed just for children and we love it. You can probably get it at any salon that caters to children.

I understand! My 6 YO also has a lot of long straight fine hair that is a bear to comb out dry or wet! I don't know how "natural" it is, but the Suave Sleek formula has been a godsend! Most of the tangles come out while I use the conditioner, and any tangles that may be left come out easily when I comb out her hair after her bath/shower. The conditioner looks and feels light but is surprisingly effective and makes my daughter's hair very soft! (Even more effective than the Bumble and Bumble Super Rich conditioner that I use.) I also use the Suave Sleek formula for my 3 YO daughter and get the same results. Good luck!

I started making my own soaps and lotions to help my Husband who has exczema. So I understand wanting to stay away from chemicals. If you can find a person who sells shampoo bar soap, I think that would help. Natural soap does not strip the hair of all its natural oils. In fact, I find that I get a buildup and use a regular shampoo every now and again. Also, no matter what I use I always use a vinegar rinse after the shampoo is rinsed out. A basic vinegar rinse is 1 to 2 tbsp of vinegar to 2 cups of water. I have a bottle in the shower and just add some to my rinse cup and add warm water from shower. You can also make a tea of various herbs to help with shine and color, then add the vinegar to lukewarm tea.

A conditioner that I like to use is one of my natural lotions. I put it on before washing my hair, then wash and then vinegar rinse. Sometimes if my hair is especially dry, I will run some light oil (sweet almond oil) thru my wet hair. I use a very small amount otherwise you would look like you need to wash your hair again.

Do NOT wash hair every day. Try every other day. I wash my hair every 2 days usually. Washing often strips the oils from the hair. As for curly hair, I don't have too much advice since I have very straight hair, but I have heard that instead of washing with shampoo, some ladies just wash with conditioner. I could say if it works one way or the other, but I have heard of a book or something like it called "The Curly Girl Method". You might want to look at that.
