Wholesomebabyfood.com is a great website that has charts to suggest what foods to give at what age and how to prepare them if you want to make them at home.
Hello ladies, my 10 month old will not eat the stage 3 baby foods. I've been giving him the oatmeal ceral he seems to love that but the food (vegetables, meats) he's not taking. I've started giving him my food but it's so complex not sure what he should, could eat and or not. He's not allergic to anything. If there is anyone who can give me some food tips that they have given thier children it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone for your advice. We've tried the mash potatoes and he loves them. He even loves the whole wheat pasta. I'm not gonna loose sleep he's eating everything we are as you all suggested within reason. Again thanks so much.

my first child was completely on table food by 8-9 mos...and #2 would never really eat baby food so she was on it from basically 5 mos. they have both always done awesome. just small bits of the same things that are in baby foods. especially if there are no allergies. just what we did, and it has been fine. #3 on the way and i am sure this one will start just as early.
i would also add that i dont think they need to have teeth before they start eating harder foods. my youngest is now 1 and she eats anything and everything and only have 4 teeth up front. she had the chewing motion down from the start and used her jaw to mash soft table food.
My daughter wasn't interested in 3rd foods either. We started her on Gerber graduates around 10 months which helped ease her in to regular table food...though I still have trouble convincing Daddy that she shouldn't eat tacos more than once in a 24 hr period just b/c he does! : )
Hi Y.,
I introduced my little ones at that age to Gerber Pasta Pick-ups and the Gerber meat sticks in a jar, cut up, of course. Also, you can break up sandwich meat like turkey, ham and roast beef slices into bite-sized pieces. I like the nitrite-free meats like Hormel and Oscar Mayer Natural. Frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn, green beans) boiled soft is a good veggie choice. Motts (no sugar added) apple sauce, cut-up fruits like strawberries, bananas, pears, peaches, etc. are healthy and good. Buy organic or wash the fruit with a produce wash. Of course, cheerios are always a favorite. My daughter ate cheerios, banana slices and Yo Baby organic yogurt for breakfast for the longest time. Gerber fruit bars cut into small pieces are tasty for breakfast as well as toast and muffins. Hope this information gives you some good ideas. :)
Hi Y., As long as you are being responsible with the food you are giving him don't worry. If he get some gas from table you will know not to give him so much next time.My son was eating table food at 10 months also, but he was on formula until he was almost two.So you enjoy your son and feed him some of your food.
My daughter refused to eat the stage 3 foods too. I would suggest trying some soft solid foods like banana pieces, cooked sweet potato, slightly mashed cooked peas, etc. These worked well for us to transition her from completely pureed foods to solid foods. She still doesn't eat solid meats well, even in small pieces, but I believe she just doesn't like to chew long enough to break them down (she does have her first set of molars, so it is not an inability to chew). We started her on soft solids around 8 months because she wanted what we were eating and was refusing to eat pureed foods. If your child is eating the cereal well, don't stop that. Just give the cereal AND something new to try each day. Of course, repeat things he didn't like the first time because it really does take many tries before they will accept some foods. My daughter eats almost anything we put in front of her now! She does, however, get tired of the same thing every day. Usually we can get away with feeding her the same type of food for about 3 days before she sticks her nose up at it. A few days later, she'll gladly eat it again. Hope this info will help! Just a couple other ideas for variety...we mixed the cereal into yogurt so she could eat it herself when she demanded to use her own spoon, shredded cheese has been a favorite of hers for protein and calcium, small bits of bread, cheerios, KIX, cooked pieces of zucchini...all good starter solids/transition foods.
I have always thought that using 'real' food, even with spices is the way to go. They sell a portable hand cranked food grinder that helps you make the food the right texture. My boys all ate table food right from the get-go. I introduced one thing at a time, just for allergy sake, and used jarred baby food only when I was going out somewhere and then it made it easier for me to pack. My only advice is to try and get organic products when available. Remember as long as you are still giving breastmilk or formula most of his/her nutrients are still available. At this point you are just stimulating his/her tastebuds and texture tolerance, not neccessarily 'feeding' him/her. Good luck and enjoy!
Have you tried that Stage 3 baby food? Try it yourself, if you don't like, I wouldn't feed it to the baby. YUCKO!
I would cook the veggies myself. I would do big batches of carrots, broccoli, butternut squash, peas, etc., and then puree them and put them in ice cube trays and then in a freezer ziploc bag and put in the freezer. I'd take out as needed, heat it up and then the baby gets a nutritious, yummy meal.
And at the age of your little one, if you don't want to go to that trouble, just feed him off your plate at dinner, provided you are eating just as nutritious as you want your baby to eat.
I don't know if you've tasted the stage 3 foods, but they're all either nasty or bland. Neither of my kids would touch them--come to think of it, I don't know any kids who WOULD eat them. Give him what you eat, within reason. If he doesn't have teeth, try a baby food mill and just put in some of whatever you eat.
Hi I have an 11 mo old. She was not big on baby food at all, I do still give her the cereal mixed with fruit baby food she likes that I also cut up fresh fruit and feed that to her bananas are a great 1 to start with, I also cook veggies until they are soft (you can buy a bag of frozen and just heat upa small serving this saves money and there are usually no preservatives) Cheese is also fine if there isn't an allergy. My daughter also enjoys fish such as cod and talapia fish flakes up into nice small bites, we also do lean ground beef or turkey (drain and rinse to get xtra oil out) small pieces of chicken (think pinky or smaller) Low sugar cereal cheeri os (store brand is fine) also some of the stores carry brown rice puffs and whole wheat puffs they make a great snack and are a lot cheaper and healthier then some of the puffs you can buy made for babies (although I occasionally buy those too) My daughter does eat eggs too if you are concerned about allergy wait or talk to your doc. How about cut up whole whaet bread? Just about any healthy food you eat your baby can eat just maake it small and make sure that its soft. I bet your 10 mo old will be so excited to try new foods, at this age they are just dying to get their little fingers or food and feed themselves. Watch for over stuffing as sometimes they will shove a whole handfull in not understanding. Until they dont do that just put a few pieces on the tray at a time. Hope this helps!
Hey there!
I have a 10 month old too--he HATED the Stage 3 foods--he would always gag on them. I still give him Stage 2 and he loves the Chicken Noodle, Veg. Chicken and Turkey and Rice. I also have been giving him the Gerber Graduates. He's VERY good at gumming his food and LOVE those! Does he eat your food well? How about trying some bologna, turkey meat or I even give my son little mini pancakes. Like I said he's so good about "chewing" the food. Also the Gerber Graduates in the little round "can"--the one you put in the microwave for like 30 seconds--my son LOVES the one with Chicken, pasta stars, corn etc. Hope that helps a little bit! According to my ped. he can have anything since we don't have any allergies either. Just can't have a glass of cows milk (can have other dairy products such as mac and cheese, yogurt etc) honey, egg whites, shellfish and nuts. Hope that helps you a little bit!
Y.,
There is a great website that gives a list of foods you can introduce to children and when. It is www.wholesomebabyfood.com. It was really helpful to me! It also has some great recipes that the whole family will enjoy.
Hi Y.,
You have been given a lot of good advice already, but here is my .02 worth.
Table foods as you eat. My son was off ALL baby foods by 9 months including a bottle.
K just would NOT eat baby foods. I didn't sweat the small stuff.
what I did do was cut things very tiny. and offer things such as mashed potatoes, small pieces of veggies and made sure he drank his milk.
cheerios, and small crackers graham crackers are good.
Things NOT to give include hot dogs that are round, popcorn, whole peanuts/nuts of any kind. grapes in whole form, peanut butter because they may not have teeth, and honey.
(You can cut hot dogs up in 1/4 teeny sizes pieces. cut in half and cut each half in half again and then cut into small pieces. cut grapes the same way) I tended to stay away from the grapes tho. My nephews LOVED them and their mom peeled and cut them that way).
Talk with your doctor and see what s/he advises as well.
Just follow your momma bear guts on this one.
HTH,
B.

Hi Y.,
I am a firm believer in baby food. I think that like all their other body parts, their little tummies need time to grow and mature properly. That is why the baby foods don't contain salt, sugar and spices (they shouldn't). I have found that some of the stage 2 baby foods on the market do, however, contain eggs (which are a big no no before age 1) and sugar and other things I wouldn't give my baby right now. Also, my doctor said that my baby should NOT eat any foods with chunks or much texture until he has teeth. She said that the chunky baby food is a marketing ploy...whether you believe that or not is up to you, but for safety's sake I don't give my 8 month old textured food because he doesn't have teeth to chew, and he needs time to get used to textures and being able to process and swallow those different textures.
In my opinion, the baby cereals (I like oatmeal best) and lots of un-altered fruits and veggies (baby foods) are still good at this age. After age 1 there is plenty of time to introduce table food.
Good luck!
My son also would not eat the stage 3 baby food. For him it was a texture issue. Most of the stage 3 are pureed with little chunks and my son didn't like the mix of textures. So for us we would still use the stage 1-2 baby food that was fully pureed or give him soft table food. Hope that helps.
