Need Diapers for 2 Year Old That Don't Leak

We are starting to introduce potty training to my 2 year old son, but it's in the VERY early stages. He still wears diapers all the time. For the past couple months, nearly every morning he's woken up with a diaper that's leaked all over his PJs and sheets. I've tried Night-time pullups and regular diapers (Huggies) to no avail. I think they are only made to hold the contents of one full bladder and my son must pee a lot! He wears size 6 diapers and size 3-4T Pull ups (weighs 36 lbs). Does anyone have a suggestion for a large diaper that will hold a lot of pee? We've tried restricting liquids in the evening and have not found it effective...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I tried the Huggies nightime diapers and have had some success -- though they only come in size 5 that I've found, which is a bit snug. I will try those diaper doublers. Thanks everyone!

Hi L.,

My daughter is 3 and weighs 45 pounds. She is not potty trained at night and we tried every single diaper out there. the ONLY ones that work for us are the Good Nites. I have seem them all over - target, walgreen's, walmart. they are great. they make boy and girl 'versions' too.

Definitely worth trying!

you can buy diaper inserts...they look like pads to go inside the diaper to absorb more!

Hi L.,
I used the pads that you put in the diapers, they are called diaper doublers, I usually found them at Walgreens, and I also use to use the "old fashion" rubber pants, I did find some many years ago at either Sears or Penney's, I can't remember, they were plastic on the outside and terry cloth on the inside. I have 4 children, and had to use these products w/ all of them. I hope you can find some, and if you can find them, buy them all up, because they work great for underwear training too. I hope this helps.

Hi L.!

We use a size smaller diaper than the largest one she could fit into to help prevent leaking ( i.e. use size 4 intead of 5 for Huggies overnight diapers for our daughter who weighs 35 lbs.) and also put in a Diaper Doubler which you can get for cheap at Babies R Us in the diaper section. I have been told that being dry overnight is an indicator that a child is ready for potty training. I don't know if that is true, but just thought I would mention it! Good luck!

I've found that Pampers are the most absorbent diaper on the market. Huggies typically fit little boys better but Pampers are definitely more absorbent.

we have a little boy who's the same age and size.
he showed some fleeting interest in potty training when our baby was born when he was 22 months, but doesn't so much care to go on the potty, although he's become much more "poop conscious" and tells me about it sometimes.

we sometimes have the same problem with diapers.
we use huggies during the day - size 6 - only thing that holds the pee.
we don't restrict liquids - too hot and not good for the system.
we have run into the same problem with the pullup diapers - plus the ones with "woody/buzz" are getting too small even though they say they go up to more weight - they don't.

we use overnight diapers now that have soccer players on them.
i think they're called goodnights.
they're much more absorbent and bigger so they fit better when they're full.
some nights are fuller than others.
we found if we offer him milk when he's up and about at least 2 times during he day and be sure he has access to water all the time, we usually don't have trouble. if all he has is water, it goes through a little faster and we have more water overnight.

i've also found that if we change his diaper first thing in the morning to avoid filling it up with the first morning void as well as the overnight pee, it doesn't leak.

we also had more trouble with leaky diapers when he was in the crib... now that he's in a big boy bed and can get up when he wants, we have less trouble - not sure why.

hope this helps - just knowing somebody else deals with wet bottoms too.

we've decided that we'll wait for him to be ready - all the boys in our families have trained at 3 and done it quickly and well.
but we just had to wait till they're ready.
i know it's possible earlier, but since i'm home w. him and he doesn't have to go for somebody else at daycare, it's no biggie.

our baby is 8 months and he's done much better all around as she's gotten bigger.
when she was tiny - itty bitty - everything was harder for everybody.
amazing what some rest and a regular nap schedule will do for everybody.
hope things get better soon.

The little boy I do day care for is the same way. I swear the kid can drink one sippy of juice or whatever and it triples coming out the other end. Took me a long time to get used to it at first... ended up with A LOT of wet spots on our sofa from him, needless to say, very frustrating. Luckily his mother always brings at least one spare outfit for him but sometimes this still isn't enough. His mother decided he was ready for potty training and honestly, things just got worse. Pull ups and other training diapers just aren't made to catch as much as regular diapers, not even the over night ones. I admit it took me awhile to get into a potty training mode at all... he was starting b4 my daughter and I wasn't ready to potty train her let alone anyone else's kid yet. Over time my daughter got interested and I was able to get more into the mode but he never says he has to go so if I am distracted with my girls or cleaning up or something like that then he tends to end up soaking through still because he fills it so fast. I'm sorry this is more of an I can sympathize note than a helpful one. I know that Huggies has an actual overnight diaper you may want to try. I've heard some people talk about waking kids up at night and taking them to the potty or if you can change his diaper and have him stay asleep at night that maybe would help... I'm sorry I wish I could help more. Good luck!

We were having the same problem. We switched to Huggies Nighttime Diapers. My son wears a size 5 and he hasn't had a leak since.

we use cloth diapers (bum genious 2.0) with double pads at night. Hemp are the best and still thin and contoured. You could buy a 2-3 or three and wash every three days if he only needs then at night. We never have wet clothes with our 17m old daughter who sleeps 11 hours at a time.

try www.wildflowerdiapers.com

PS: my daughter drinks most of her days worth of water right before bed. We have tried to change this in prep for potty training, at some point, but that is just the way she is.

I have the same issue and I used to have a pack of those diaper doubles and it was the only thing that worked! I can't find them anywhere though. I was considering using maxi pads! I would NOT recommend putting micro-fiber clothes on your baby's privates. They are too scratchy and who knows what kinds of chemical reaction they have when urinated on. Good luck and let me know.

My son was like that! Pull-ups are not at all as absorbent as regular diapers - they are not meant to be. They are for "training" and the claim is that your child should feel when he's wet, so they are not meant to keep a child dry.

The problem with my boy was that he slept on his stomach with his bum in the air, so all the liquid was at the front of the diaper... even his shirt would be wet! I liked both Huggies and Pampers - the overnight regular diapers, not pull-ups. I also went up a size at night... even though they seemed big
they held more. My kids only started wearing pull-ups at night after they were potty-trained.

I found pull-ups to be counterproductive when it comes to potty training. Most kids use them as diapers - they know they've got one on and will go in it rather than use the potty. It's confusing to go back and forth. If you are ready to train, put him in underwear and be prepared to stay home a lot for the first few days. My son trained before he was 2 and was WAY easier than my daughter, so I don't believe the myth that boys train later! :)

If you don't mind doing more laundry, you might try to use just microfiber washcloths folded in thirds as an insert. You can buy a large pack for only $10 at costco (they're usually in the auto section)... (wash them first in warm water, mild detergent).
