Need Cheap but Good Diapers

I have an almost 3-month-old, and I've been using Pampers up until now. But--we're trying to cut back in some areas, so I'd like to find a cheaper diaper. Does anyone know of any brands that prevent leaks and don't feel like cardboard? My little guy does seem to be somewhat rash-prone, so I'm hoping for something that won't exacerbate that problem, either. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all the responses! Since I still have a good stash of Pampers, I'll continue to use those at night, and try out the Target, Costco, and Luvs brands and see which work best during the day. And--I'm going to become a regular coupon clipper. Hopefully I'll be able to save a little. Thanks again!

I am a huge fan of White Cloud from Wal-Mart. If you have a Sam's card thier Member's Mark diapers are great as well. You get like 250 diaper for about $32. That is what I have been using on my son for the past 8 months or so!!

Hi C.!
I hear ya about wanting cheaper diapers! I have used CVS Plushies and they are much cheaper than Huggies & Pampers, but are still soft and contain the leaks!

Good luck in finding the right diaper!

I have found that Parent Choice from Walmart or the Target brand in the green package have been the best. My girls have always been a little rash-prone and could only use Huggeies, but then I found the work the same if not better (I find more leaks with Huggies Supreme the these store brands). The good news is that they cost no more than $6 a pkg. I have also found that the target brand wipes are the best ones out there. They are very soft and smooth. Good luck!

Parents Choice was inexepensive so we went with that (at Wal mart), but at some point my daughter began leaking at night so we now use Parents choice during the day and Luvs at night. Parents choice was cheaper per diaper than even the Sam's Club diapers. If you go with Huggies or something like that- surprisingly they tend to be cheaper at Toys R Us than any other place.

The Luvs never leak and they are guarenteed- money back!

Okay, I know you are probably sick of responses but I had to give my two cents worth...I am a "snob" when it comes to diapers and wipes because I hate those crunchy diapers so I would only use pampers(swaddlers) when they were little and then Huggies when they got bigger(less leaks for us) until a friend introduced me to Costco's diapers (kirkland)at first I didn't want to try them but I relented...they are the best, just like Huggies and no exxageration. As for wipes, my DH will help change the babies but he cannot stand for a wipe to roll up in his hand and if they do he uses waaaay to many so he would only change them if we had Huggies wipes-they are thicker. Well I was mentioning this to a friend and she said you should try parents choice at Wal-mart in the purple and orange case-I was very skeptical until she came over with her twins and gave me wipe and said "what do you think?" I truly thought they were Huggies-I never bought anything else since, unless I can't get to a Wal-mart. So that's just my opinion, Costco for diapers and wal-mart for wipes. HTH :o)

for my two little ones I used LUVS they are made by pampers and are less expensive. I used LUVS during the day and A major brand (pampers cruisers) only 1 at night-- just in case of a major leak throught the night to cut down on cost. My kiddos never seemed to have a leak w/ LUVS there is even some sort of leak guarentee w/ LUVS....
I tried to buy the larger boxed ones

I absolutley love pampers to they are my favorite but can get pricey...LUVs were always my next choice when money was tight. They have great leak protectant and what I really like about them is that they smell like baby powder like most pampers do. Huggies don't have a wonderful baby powder smell. I would recommend LUVS and they are reasonabley priced. Since you have a 3 month old he/she is probably in size 1 or 2 and at that size you can get I think between 46 and 52 diapers for 8 dollars at the dollar general. They are are great diapers although I still perfer pampers over all of them. Good luck though and God bless!!

I have 5 children and have used the Parents brand from Walmart. I have my only little girl in them now and can get a box of 92 size 4 for about $13.97. She was in Pampers for awhile too. The Parents brand is a little stiffer but I found that if I bend them a little before I put them on her they are fine. It saves about $6.00 each time I buy them and every little bit helps. We also use the Parents brand unscented wipes and they are just as good as the more expensive brands. Good Luck!

If you have to use cheap diapers, Walmart White cloud is a good one. However, I have found that using cheaper diapers isn't always the way to go. You have to change your kids way more often than you would a name brand. To some people that doesn't bother them, but in the long run you are spending just as much money because you use more diapers. And I have never found a cheap diaper that would make it through the night. I had six babies, so I can definately say this due to experience.

Hi C.. I have two girls as well, a 5 year old and a 22 month old and both girls were raised on White Cloud diapers found only at Walmart. With my youngest, I have started purchasing cloth, since I am about to have a son myself and was hoping to save money in the long run. She has very sensitive skin, being a redhead, and as long as you change diapers very frequently, there isn't a problem. However, you shouldn't use diaper rash cream with cloth diapers and so when the occassion arises, I go back to my old faithful, White clouds. In all honesty, babies body shapes are all different and to prevent leakage, you need to find one that fits your son best, both in the stride and across the crotch. I found Pampers too wide across the crotch for my girls and Huggies tend to run a little short on the stride. If you have a tall baby, this can cause issues with leakage. I hope this mom to mom insight has helped. Good luck!

Hello, my name is A. and i am a mothe rof three, two of which are 2 yr old twins, so when it comes to saving money i hear you......my children are highly allergic to pampers so where on huggies for a while. If you want cheaper, and i know it is going to make me sound poor, but dollar general. Ihave tried, cvs brand, walmart brand, pampers, huggies, white cloud, luvs, etc. So far the best i found was dollar general. Not only are they cheap but sturdy. For example, my twins use 2t pullups. Dollar general is 7.99 for 29 pullups whereas huggies are 15.99 for 29. See the difference. I hgave them a shot and i loved them. Not only are the cheaper, but softer. The feel like real underwear, and fit so snug and comfortable. They dont have that plastic feel most diapers do. And they have never leaked for me. Try them and let me know

I usually alternate between pampers baby dry and LUVS. We buy Pampers when we have a coupon (there is almost always one in the newspaper...Sunday I think), and LUVS when we don't. Although my husband definately prefers the pampers, they are very similar diapers. Niether of them seem to bother my son's skin (we are both red-heads, so we understand about sensitive skin). He has gotten a few heat rashes in the LUVS but I think that it is not related to the diaper. He is a very busy 19mo. old who loves to play outside.

I used Luvs on both of my children and found those to be better than Huggies or Pampers. They used to be less expensive so I am assuming they still are but I did find that the really off brands are NOT worth it. It goes back to the saying you get what you pay for. As far as the rash prone goes, keep him covered in a good ointment, something light and easy on the skin, not a heavy cream like desitin unless he actually develops a rash. Also, try to clean him with a warm cloth rather than wipes when you are at home and save the wipes for when you go out. Using wipes with Aloe should help also. Hope this helps!

I know that you have already received a lot of responses. However, I was just like you. I swore by pampers (of course everything else broke my now 8-year-old out. However, after my 2-year-old was born I decided to stay home so we had to cut costs. I tried store brand diapers, but they did not work for my son. That is when I went to LUVS. I tried it the first time and did not like them because they leaked (of course my son had lost a lot of weight so was very tiny and the smallest diaper did not fit right). The good news about Luvs is they have a guarantee that they won't leak or your money back. So I filled out the refund form and got my money back. I felt bad because I bought the smallest pack and used almost all of them, but they still refunded my money. After that experience I knew I wanted to try them again when my son had gained his weight back. I tried them later and loved them. I researched and found out that LUVs is the cheapest at Walmart. So that is where we bought his diapers. Also you can register at LUVS.com and they mail and email you coupons and updates on where to find them for the least amount of money.

The main thing to remember is that every baby is different and so what may work for us may not work for you. I would recommend buying the smallest pack of diapers and try a few out and the go from there (which sounds like what you are doing). Good luck.

I think you should shop sales and stick with what you like. Target has been running a GREAT sale on Pampers for the past month. You got a five dollar gift card every time you bought Pampers, if you had the coupon from their website. You could print off as many coupons you wanted, and use them every time you went in. You could also combine the manufacturer coupons with them.
Just an idea. I dont see the point in compromising when I don't need to. I stick with name brands I like and just stock up when I get a good sale. I pay way less for things than my friends who buy crappy brands to save money.
Just my opinion, but I HATE White Cloud. I tried that once and had to change my baby so much that it didnt save me money. I've tried the CVS brand and it's a lot like Pampers. I'm not a Pampers person, so I didnt like it, but you might. They were on sale last week so I tried it. Walgreens diapers were free the whole month of July if you had the right coupons. I tried their regular brand and thought they were like White Cloud. Their premium brand was also free and I thought that was more like Huggies, which is what I like.
CVS has a GREAT sale on Pampers two months ago. If you had the right coupon, it only cost like 12 dollars for three big packages. That's awesome!

I recommend Target brand diapers. They are inexpensive and there is no fragrance in them like Luvs. Target's are totally fragrance free and my little boy never got a rash from them. Luvs gave him bad rashes.

But I do recommend Pampers overnights. The first size they start at are 4's.

That's what I do...cheap ones during the day, but good ones at night and even nap time. It really saves from having to wash the sheets every time.

I have four kids and everyone of them wore LUVS. Next to the generic or store brand they were the cheapest and they never leaked! I loved them! Also, none of my kids had any reaction to them and my youngest had pretty sensiyive skin.

I have a 3 month old daughter and we've tried the diapers from DiaperMart. They were less expensive, felt more like cloth, and actually held up, in my opinion, better than Pampers. There are 2 store locations that I am aware of: one in Garland on Centerville and 635 and one in Dallas on Mockingbird.

Lauren was small when she was born 5 lbs. 10 oz. and we needed the preemie size diapers. Pampers Swaddlers were a bit costly, so I tried the ones from DiaperMart at a friend's recommendation. I was able to get a box of about 84, I believe, for $14. Now that she is larger, 11 lbs., we are able to use the pkgs of diapers given in the baby showers (I like Huggies the best). When we run out, I plan to try the DiaperMart diapers again when I can't purchase Huggies.

Morning,

If you have a Sam Club Card that is the cheapest I found you get a case of 200 of their name brand for around 34.00 or you can go to Centerville road where chucky cheese is there is a diaper mart there they have good diapersyou can get a case there but it is not worth the drive unles you buy in bulk if you live way off but if you are in that area alot and can just drop in its a good buy also Sam's has the Second stage baby food there in the case and it is a little cheaper than if you go to walmart to buy it. Hope this helps.

The best ones that I know of are LUVS. They have come a long way. We bought a box to test them out and I was very pleased. I don't like any of the unbrand diapers. those are the ones that feel like cardboard. You can sign up at luvs.com to get coupons.

I swear by the Target brand diapers! Huggies is what I used faithfully for my 8 year old, but for my 18 mos. old Huggies & Pampers didn't work. We used LUV's for the longest time and just recently was given a recommendation to use Target brand! They are great. They hold well with NO leaks. I get the big box (my son is in size 5) that comes w/ 80 diapers for $13.69 before tax. Good luck!

I know this reponse is late but wal-mart brand is wonderful. I had a neighbor that bought my daughter some right after she was born and was amazed at how well they work and that you can not smell the urine like you can in some of the big name brand types. Thought I would throw that out to you. Good luck!!

Cloth diapers! For under $300 (not being frugal) you can outfit your kiddo in cloth diapers until he is potty trained. You can buy used in good condition, washing is super easy and equated to about 1-2 extra small loads per week. This is the absolute easiest way to save on diapers. Especially if you used prefolds (but I wouldn't).

We liked Pampers too. Sam's Club/Walmart brand diapers (Parent's Choice) are just as good and less expensive. The only thing is, I don't know if Sam's carries the baby sizes. I think they start at size 3.

As for rashes, I use lots of baby powder on my son. Especially after a bath to make sure all those little rolls and creases get/stay dry. And I recommend A&D Original Ointment (yellow color) for treating minor rashes/redness.

We use the Dollar General brand of diapers. I have tried several store brand and other off brand diapers and Dollar General is the only one I have been satisfied with. And Pampers is the only name brand I will ever use. My sons leak with anything else. So to me, these at DG are the most comparable. Soft, cloth-like, etc. We have been really happy with the Dollar General brand. We have also switched to their wipes as well. Pack of 240 for $4.75. Can't beat that. We went to Dollar General brand for same reason...to save money. One thing about these...have to be on top of diaper changing because they don't hold liquid as long as Pampers will. So at night, we have the boys wear Pampers...also on trips same thing - Pampers. Other than that, they have been great. Might want to just try a small pack of different brands to see which one you like the best.

C. B,
I remember using Luvs when funds were really tight for me as a single mom who had 3 roommates, 2 jobs, and still ended up filing a chapter 13 BK to keep my home when my son was in diapers. They were less money, worked well, and even had coupons. I still loved Huggies Supreme with the cloth like bottom the best - and often found coupons for them. If you can't find coupons in the Sunday paper or from the grocery stores, check the manufacturers websites and you can often find coupons there.
Consider talking to other moms you know too - maybe their child has grown and they have left over of a smaller size - since their child can't use them cuz they're too small surely they'd give them to a "friend".

Whatever you do, stay away from the really "cheap" diapers (no-name store brands) they absolutely are not worth the savings....they don't work well, leak, and are just a waste.

Good Luck - Keep doing what you're doing - things will get better.

I don't know if you are interested but a good way to save money is to use cloth diapers. My daughter used fuzzibuns for bother of her kids. There are lots of different types out there. There is an initial cost of $100 or so but once you have the diapers then it is just a matter of washing them. She saved lots of money especially when she had two in diapers. It is not for everyone but just a suggestion. Her children NEVER had a rash with these diapers and they are very soft and cute. The covers come in different patterns and colors.

I use WalMart's Parent's Choice brand. They are just as good, I think. I have never bought anything other than WalMart's store brand...even when my 7y/o was born. I also use the Huggies Natural Care wipes (they are cheaper than most) tho because they are not as rough...but only the unscented. I got the scented once by accident and my girls got rashes.

I used to only use Pampers but also decided to cut back because they just get so expensive. I have 2 in diapers now. I have been using White Cloud diapers and LOVE them. A friend of mine uses the Target brand diapers and she says that they are just as good as Pampers. So I would suggest White Cloud or the Target Brand. I have also heard that the Costco diapers are good too (I saw someone posted about them earlier). The "cheaper" brand that I would steer clear from are the Walgreens brand, they didn't work very well, also Parents Choice didn't work well or me either. Hope this helps!

I love the Luvs diapers. We've used them on both the kids. I had to use pampers on my girl until she started eating solids becuase they leaked occasionally, but my son wore them from the day I had to start buying diapers (He got quite a few huggies and pampers from the baby shower).I haven't really gotten up the guts to try the store brand diapers. The ones I've seen don't look all that comfortable to me and seem even more bulky than the luvs, and since my girl was a little chunky and had a hard time wearing anything but stretchy things, that really hasn't been appealing.

I have a little man who is 5, when he was little i swore by pampers as well, but they get pricey. I switched to LUVS, and was glad i did. they worked great. He was about 6-8 months old before i started trying different things and i found that on some of the Store Brands if i did not change him as soon as he peed the front of the diaper would conform to his body and would get hard. So if you are trying the store brands on a little one like your son get a small package so you are not wasting your money if they dont work out. And if he is resh-prone stay away form the Babies R Us (Just for me?) & Wal Mart (Little Suzi) brand. You will find your diapering needs will be completely different with a boy. Got to pampers.com to sign up for coupons, remember WalMart will match competors ads and you can use your coupon on top of that, also if you like LUVS as he gets bigger you can buy them online for less than you can at WalMart and will get a bigger package. Also somethig that worked me us. Once he got where he was not going all the time...I used the Pampers Easy Ups, by that time, when is he standing, there is not that much of a price difference in the major brands. Good Luck

Have you ever considered cloth? Cloth diapers today are more than the pin and plastic pants that our mothers used. If your son is rash-prone, cloth can help a lot. Cloth can be daunting because of upfront costs. Unless you sew and decide to make your own. I've recycled old t-shirts, flannel sheets, and jeans to make diapers. Google "cloth diaper" and you will get a bazillion sites.

I also have a three month. I use kirkland brand from costco. Its cheaper, excellent quality, and you buy in bulk. I have had to buy diapers once a month which saves on gas and I dont have to constantly check to see if I am low. If you dont already have a membership look into buying one. With 3 kids, buying in bulk couldnt hurt you.
