We have two cats and are looking for a solution on how to keep the cats from jumping into the crib. Are there "crib tops" available? If so, where? Any advice on a solution?
Thanks everyone. I was really surprised by the number of responses.
We are going to try to find a crib tent on ebay for while the crib is in our bedroom. Once we move the guys into their nursery (3 months??) we will install the retractable screen door (Home Depot or Lowes websitre). That will keep the cats out of the whole room, but let us see and hear what's going on.
Thanks again!

OMG! I was just thinking about the same thing! We recently got a cat and I am really worried about her getting into the crib too. I have seen a netting (like in Africa) but I don't think that will keep my cat out bc it is too light weight. If you find out anything I would appreciate it if you would let me know too. I will keep searching and let you know if I find anything as well!
Congrats on the twins!!

There is a crib tent that works wonderfully. I also have two cats and one is a major jumper. I got mine from e-bay. It's in storage right now but I could look at the exact name for you if you'd like. Email me at ____@____.com if you'd like more info about it.

Best of luck with your twin sons and your cats.

I don't have cats, but I needed something to prevent my little climber from getting out of his crib. I love the crib tent. http://www.amazon.com/Tots-in-Mind-0001-Crib/dp/B000056HLX It works well to keep the baby in and the cats out :) You can get them at Babies R Us and several online retailers.

We have cats and I have a crib tent on my sons bed. They can be expensive but they work. I think ours ran about $70. I have also seen several auctions for them on e-bay.

We were worried about our cat prior to our son's birth, but she stayed FAR away from him so it wasn't ever an issue. However, he learned very early how to climb out of his crib, so we got the Crib Tent. It was GREAT! Easy to set up and worked like a charm. We could zip him in and know that he was safe. They are pricey, but worth it.

I've never had this problem but I just recently talked to some who put masking tape sticky side up in the bassinet and her cat jumped in and freaked out. The cat no longer gets into the bassinet or crib!
Try Babies R Us or Right Step for crib tents.

I think there are crib tops, but we found our cat was terrified of the baby, and more than happy to hide and sleep somewhere else. you might check one step ahead (online) for crib solutions though.
With our first child, our cat did the same thing! We had the crib set up for a few months before the baby was born and the cat slept in there constantly! Someone told me to put tin foil in the bottom of the crib...I thought they were nuts but I did it. And honestly, it worked for us! It scared the cat half to death when she jumped in and landed on it and she nevery tried to go back in again! It worked for us! Hopefully it can work for you too! But we also left the foil in the crib until we had our son. And just as a safety precaution, we shut his door at night time just to ensure the cat didn't try it again! Good luck!

Here is a link to a crib tent at babiesrus. They are kind of expensive, so we never ended up getting one.
My solution was, I did not allow the cat in her room at all for the first 6 or so months, now I will allow him in when we are in there playing. But I keep her door closed at nap time and night time. He has yet to try to jump in her crib.

I was worried about that before my daughter was born, also. But it was never a problem. I did buy what I think is called a mosquito net to put on top of it. And I think the first few weeks, we shut her door.
My husband also recently put a cat door into a wall attached to our garage and put the cat box out there...it really helped our litter problem smelling and tracking into the house.
I have to tell you that six years later, we have to constantly tell my daughter to put down the cats (she holds them like babies...and gets fur all over her)...but nonetheless, she loves them and they love her. I also heard that homes that have pets in them when the kids are young help build up their allergy system so that they are less likely to be allergic to animals.
Good luck...

We also have kitties (3) and had the same concerns regarding our new little angel. We purchased a net that fits over most anything (at Babies R Us); it can go over the crib, the stroller, the bassinet, or even the pack n play for outside time. The net is designed to keep bugs out, but it makes for a very unwelcoming landing to a kitty! We had a couple of kitty visitors early on while Isabelle was still in her bassinet with absolutely no injury or frights to the baby (only the kitties) who were like... WOW what's that!!? And they NEVER have been in the crib, although we keep the nursery door closed during naptime just in case. I do however recommend keeping kitties claws trimmed during the first couple of months after babies arrival and again when they start crawling.

We have two very large cats and the nets that fit over the cribs did not stop our 30lb cat... so instead we put a screen door on our daughter's room .. now... she is 6 mo and I don't use a play pen at all... instead I put her in her room and close the screen door... she can see me.. I can see her and the same device that keeps the cats out also keeps her out of trouble... it was $30 at Home Depot and worth every penny! You can find really nice decrotive screen doors too... ours is fairly plain, but she can't get out and they can't get in.

After reading everyone's response, thought I might add that they keep 3 yr olds out of the crib, too. My son is 3 and my daughter is 7 mon. They share a room and my son climbs on everything. The crib tent has kept him out of the crib and has kept my little girl safe and sound. :)

I have seen one in the back of "Pregnancy" magazine. We have cats and started training them early on not to jump in the crib. Our baby is 6 months old and they have not jumped in the crib once.

One of my good friends had a similar problem, but with her 3 year old little boy climbing into her baby girl's crib! :) She got a sort-of-tent that attaches to the top of the crib. It's mesh and has a zippered opening for easy access and visibility, but keeps unwanted "guests" out... I'm pretty sure she just got it at Babies-R-Us or somewhere like that.
Good Luck! Hope this helps!

Yes, Try the Crib Tent II. It not only covers the top of the crib but has mesh down the sides so arms, legs, and pacifiers can't get out. Sometimes you can find them in stores, but know they are online at www.infanthouse.com. I also suggest you join a twins group in your area - check out www.mpom.net for my local chapter. If you are not in the Lewisville area, their website will have other area chapter information as well. I have twins as well, so know first hand these crib tents are great!

If you are in a hurry to get it, go to Babies R Us and get a "Crib Tent" for about $60. If you aren't, go to ebay and you can get it for more like 35 or 40 used.
They are perfect!!!!!

This is what we have for our crib, and we love ours. We also don't have to worry about our infant falling/crawling out of his crib as he gets older. We used one for our first child as well and couldn't have been more pleased with it. Babies r' Us also carries the crib tent as well.
Hi M.,
We had the same issue. What worked for us was to put out the crib in advance (at least a few weeks if not longer) and lay sheets of aluminum foil inside the crib. Everytime the cat jumped in, it would startle him and he would jump right out. After a while, he was trained to never jump in. We did this for the bassinet in our room too!
Good luck!
We ended up not needing it.
We took the advice of our Vet and it ended up working great with our cats.....
We set the nursery up a few months before our angel arrived and let them explore every aspect. She said that if you let them explore, they will be less likely to want to climb around once baby arrived. They actually love being under the crib more than inside. We kept a water bottle nearby and when they climbed into the crib, we sprayed a lil squirt to let them know to stay out. Once the baby arrived, we let them know they had to stay at least an arms length away from her and they have obeyed that command. Good luck!

Yes, you can buy a mesh tent that goes over the crib to keep cats out and babies in! My good friend used to use for her daughters crib. I think you can find them at places like Right Start and One Step Ahead.
Good luck!

I have a Crib Tent but not for cats. It's to keep my daughter in! I bought mine from Craigs List. Check that or ebay so you don't have to pay full price. Especially if you will need 2 of them!

This may sound strange but a friend of mine had one of those retractable screen doors installed on the nursery door. They sell them at Home Depot (I searched online under screen door and found it right at the top for $125) and Lowe's and they attach to the side of the door frame and pull across to latch on the other side. They don't have the typical permanent door frame of a screen door, it's basically just the screen. I have seen them on back doors before where people didn't want a screen door all of the time. This way the cats stay out but the nursery isn't closed up and the baby doesn't have anything above the crib. Hope that helps! C.

Hi M. - we found that putting the cats in the crib and letting them smell and move around it killed their curiosity (we had 3 cats when I was pregnant). Just be sure that it's only the mattress and then wipe it down. If they continue wanting to get in, Babies R Us sells a tent that goes over the top of the crib and it looked like it might help. We never had to do anything as putting them in the crib fixed the problem. I also heard that putting aluminum foil helps - lay it accross the mattress so when they jump in, it scares them away. Not sure how well that will keep them from doing it when the crib is occupied?? Hope that helps! M.
