I am having a small home party for my 2 year old son. Does anyone have game ideas for this age. A few others this age will be attending or should they just play around? Also, any ideas for fun finger food for toddlers? I have the adult menu planned already.

Have a parade! I bought cheap kazoos at the party store, we made maracas (rattles) and let the kids march around the house and yard playing music. The craft was fun as was the parade itself.

Noah's Ark Stuff and Fluff parties are great fun for children of all ages. The children get to choose a stuffed animal that has not been stuffed yet and they get to become a toy maker and bring the animal to life. A Noah's Ark party eliminates the need for goody bags because each child gets to take home a new stuffed friend. I can come as a clown, princess, pirate or just as a regular person. Depending on how many children you have, I can usually throw in a game or a magic show, free of charge.

I also do balloon twisting, magic, sing a longs, fashion shows, face painting or temporary tattoos, parades, and a ton of other fun things.

My daughters birthday was 2 months ago and this is what really helped with her party:
We had a carnival themed party so we had a clown, but let me tell you, that clown was the highlight of the tots day! The clown was a lady from our church so they could still figure out who it was, which didn't make them scared. And she kept them laughing and having a blast.
I suggest if you wanna have a clown, have someone you and your tot know be the clown, like dad or even another family memer. It helps them be a little more at ease and you won't have to pay a lot to rent a clown. Plus, she just brought some cheap toys and a whole lot of glitter to have fun with.
Next, for food I bought those pp&j uncrustables that you can get from the frozen section at any grocery store and they worked amazingly. Tots love them and moms love that they are sealed all around so no huge mess. I got them at costco for a lot of kids but if you are just having a few tots then you can get them anywhere. Another thing I got were tota apple juice boxes and fruit snacks and cookies in individual bags. Everyone love the food and the kids had a blast! Good luck. And remember not to stress out, your son is only gonna be 2, he won't remember it. And your friends will have fun as long as you are!

When my daughter was two, it was a Nemo themed party. We had a sandbox, so I bought little Nemo bubbles (ball shaped containers with Nemo on the blow stick) in packs. They were small, perfect for their little hands, and buried them in the sandbox. We hung a banner that said "Finding Nemo...in the Sandbox!"

We had areas to do things, but nothing organized.
....foam visors and buckets of foam stickers,
....coloring pages about Nemo,
....train set out (because we could)

Try http://www.playhousedisney.com . They have a whole birthday section related to thier popular kid's shows!

Also, try, http://www.noggin.com and http://www.sproutonline.com

You can also call the Sulphur Creek Nature Center in Hayward. They will bring an animal of your choice to the party for a visit! We had my son's 2nd birthday party at Sulphur Creek. The parents loved the Great Horned Owl, but the kids loved the Chinchilla and the Duck.

I liked the "parade" idea from below. 2 year olds LOVE to stomp around and be silly. My 2 year old and I do this regularly! :0)

They could make their own party hats. Buy colorful paper plates (all blue or all red, etc.). Cut an asterisk in the middle of the plate with an exacto knife. Put the plates out on the table with foam stickers. Each kid can decorate their own party hat to wear. (Their head pokes through the slits you cut)

I wouldn't try to do organized games with this age group (two year olds aren't well known for waiting patiently for a turn) but just set out different stations or tables for the kids to visit. One for playdough, one for coloring, if you have a theme you can usually find foam crafts cheap and set out foam shapes relating to your theme and stickers for the kids to decorate them etc. Example for a girl princess party, set out foam crowns and let the kids decorate with jewels etc. But they have all kinds of foam crafts at Michaels and probably have one to match your theme. I would also set out an area with puzzles and books for the kids to look at. My mother in law did something fun for my son's birthday (we celebrated it out of state, so we did it at their house). She purchased a bunch of cheap musical instruments passed them out to the kids and we had a parade. The kids loved it and they got to keep their instrument as a party favor. As for food, we did pb&j cut out in shapes with cookie cutters and chicken nuggets. I also had a veggie tray for the kids and adults. Pizza also works well for younger kids, if you order it just ask for them to double cut it so you aren't wasting a whole bunch. If you live close to a Little Caeser's they have super cheap pizza--it isn't the best tasting but the kids don't seem to care.

2 year olds pretty much entertain themselves. Pin the tail on the donkey will work. I got my son a game for about $3 at a party store that was a clown face - you had to stick the nose on the clown. It was funny to watch them all try to cheat and peek past the blindfold.
A Pinata is fun you can do it in your garage with a sheet on the floor if it's too cold to go outside.
Jello wigglers are fun, baby carrots, little chunks of cheese, goldfish crackers, You can get dinosaur or Mickey Mouse shaped chicken nuggets at Safeway or Costco. Very gourmet! Tee Hee!
Oh, and BTW - put you kid's favorite toys away - they get upset about sharing. any toys that are loud too. My son hid his teddy bear so the other kids wouldn't kiss him. Tee Hee!
Drink a beer 5 minutes before the party starts and you'll have more fun too - won't notice the jello on the walls or legos in the toilet.

I don't know about games with 2 year olds but activities yes. A ball pit is always fun. Friends and I have shared our balls with each other for parties. You can put them in a tent .tunnels to climb through. If you bought your child the busy bee for a birthday present it would be fun for the party. I highly recommend it . My kids love the busy bee and lots of ages can do it, my oldest being 11. Set up a play dough table maybe. This age is busy so active things are good. I love that you are having a small party. Those are so much more enjoyable. Have fun.

If the party is coming up within the next few weeks (winter time) you could do winter theme activities. I'm planning one for my son's playgroup. As mentioned above this age group can't really play games together--it's best to have activities. Some of the activities I've planned are "pin" (tape) the hat on Frosty the snowman, play with "snow" you can buy that snow stuff at craft stores, add water and it looks like snow and it's sort of cold, we're going to have rice krispie snowmen and drink snowman soup (hot cocoa). Also, I have a fake tree and I've now decorated it with snowflakes and I'll have snowflakes and snowmen around the house.

Hi Lisa,

For our peter pan party,ages 3 -11
We put a kitchen timer in a green sock and made him into a crocodile. then played "hot potato" with it. Fun for young kids. We hung up a blue piece of fabric in the CORNER of the front room (it created a triangular area behind it where my husband hid)and we made a little fishing pole out of a stick with a clothespin on the end. All ages of The kids LOVED being able to 'fish' and pull up a prize (crocodile squirt guns and such). The littlest ones stood on a stool. We dressed up the bday girl as tinkerbell and the bday boy as capt hook and asked the other guests to dress as well. Some of the parents looked great! A simple treasure map that the kids could follow (have the adults read the simple clues) gave the kids a little outdoor fun. One clue went to the next clue. For example in one area, the kids had to stomp on all the "cannonball" black balloons to find the clue hidden inside. that clue told them they had to walk the plank to the next area(a 4 inch wide long board on top of two bricks) to the "lagoon" (blue crepe paper streamers hanging low ..where the pond and fishing game was.the last clue was stuck to the last fishing pole...it said to go to crocodile creek (the hot potatoe game) and the winner of that game got to read the next clue.(each clue came with a chocolate coin handed from the "master sailor" (dad), so that kids that couldn't read still enjoyed getting the clues) For the grand final,we actually dug a big hole before the party and lowered a box filled with their party favor bags into it... but only covered it with a cloth and not dirt. The boys really got a kick out of hoisting this big box up out of the hole.We had to put the box in the hole right before the party so the ants wouldn't eat the choc coins. The dollar store had pirate hats and flags real cheap. There is so much you can do with this kind of party. This is a lot for a two year old, but maybe you can get an idea for a game or two. Have fun.

Hi, we had a cookie party for the holidays with several 1, 2 and 3 year olds in attendance. We pre made the dough. We bought little utensils (rolling pins, spatulas etc - even play doh utensils work well) frosting, sprinkles etc and chef hats and aprons (check Target dollar bins or the Dollar Store) We let the little guys roll their dough and decorate their cookies. Everyone got a turn to watch the cookies bake in the oven (woo-hoo!) While the cookies were baking we set up an art area with stickers, construction paper, pom poms (you get the idea). Everyone left with a gift bag of goodies (we put in tattoos, bubbles and stickers, their baking materials (apron, hat etc.) and the cookies they made. We included a couple of pre made and decorated cookies also. Since my daughter is 3 now we've added cupcakes to the menu ;-) Then we ate and had cake and wrapped up the party. It's really a fun party and the kids (and adults) had a blast. But you'll need to make sure you recruit a couple of adults to help ;-) Clean up took a while but it's worth it.

We just did pizza and let the kids play. I think at that age, games may bore them.

Have fun and happy birthday to your son!

2 year olds are still pretty much into parallel play so a table with different things or a room with a lot of activity possibilities is really better than games. play dough, building toys, etc.. It is hard to corral all of them at once. Songs and ring around the rosy type games might work if they all are used to it and know the same one. Some shy one will cling to mommy in a strange house. Put away the toys you don't want broken or have to supervise.

As to food, whatever your child likes best to eat with his fingers is a good bet for his friends. Relax and have fun. Don't feel that you have to be too organized, just prepared...

If you let your kids eat hot dogs, you can cut them in half and then cut slits in each end (not all the way to the top), then boil them to cook. When they boil, the ends curl up and they look like little octopus creatures when done. Kids get a real kick out of these!
