My family will be traveling to Ireland at the end of the summer for a two week trip. We are excited...but I am a little nervous about the overnight flight and jet lag. We will fly overnight, arrive in the morning, rent a car then travel to our destination and then try sto stay awake for the rest of the day. First class and business class on the flight are sold out so we are in coach. The kids are 14, 11 and (just) 5. The kids are good kids and well behaved, even the five year old, but anyone can turn ugly with no sleep! Has anyone any words of wisdom??

What can I do next?

Hi M.,

I have been traveling to Ireland all my life...my parents were born there and my husband is from there so his whole family is there. What I have found is the best thing to do is to take a short nap once settled into where you are staying and then to stay up the rest of the day until normal bedtime. I don't really sleep on the plane so I need that extra bit of sleep. My husband is able to sleep on the plane so he stays awake until bedtime. I guess it all depends on how much sleep you can get in during the flight.

We traveled with our daughther when she was 8 months old, a lot younger than yours. But, from what I can remember from when I was your kids' ages, a little nap always helps...but not too long or they won't be able to go to sleep at night.

Hope this helps! Have a great time, it's a beautiful country!

M. you will be fine. Everyone who has kids or jetlag has a few minutes where things might not go exactly as planned. First day will be the hardest as you know but you will have a great time and you will return with the best memories. Anyone acts up just tell them about the leprochaun's curse. Oh just kidding. Although there is no proof he isn't there either. I know you are an attorney so you will need facts. The fact is just have fun. I'm sure the kids will! Perhaps when they are down and out they could keep a journal or scrapbook. I am so jealous! S.

The flight is direct to dublin, 7 and a half hours and they will have several movies. My parents live in Ireland and so I am back and forth with my one year old. The flight over is usually pretty easy as you sleep on the way there and then you are right, stay up until the right bedtime there. It may take a day or two to get acclimatized. Have a great time.

They usually have movies on such a long flight and many flyers fall asleep or more like a nap..make sure the 5 yr old has some of his favorite toys to keep him busy (carry on capable of course)and the older two if they have IPOD would do good to bring them with..that should help keep them feeling sort of regular. As for you it will be hard because if you are anything like me you really won't be able to nap keeping an eye on the kids..so be patient and load up on coffee...enjoy
