Need Advice on Clearing Out Earwax

Hi Moms,
Does anyone have a remedy for cleaning out earwax? I put my finger in my other ear while talking on my cell phone in order to hear the caller better but I must have jammed earwax against my eardrum and now can't hear so good out of that ear. I'd rather not go to the dr right now. Years ago I did go to the dr and the nurse sprayed water in my ear to dislodge it.

So What Happened?

Thanks, Moms, I mixed peroxide with a little water and squirted my ear a few times and then used something called "Ear Cleaners" from CVS that are flexible plastic things that have a very small spoon shaped end and got behind the plug by gently pushing toward the top of the inside of my ear. Actually, very little stuff came out but I can hear wonderfully. Thanks again,

when i was a kid i had a lot of problems with my ears and my DR told me to put a few drops of alcohol in my ears daily and it would dry out the wax and it would just fall out... worked great for me! I still do it after a swim to keep my ears clean from bacteria but it always worked well for me.

Go to the pharmacist and ask what they would recommend to soften ear wax. My mother had a problem and the doctor removed some hard wax and then said to put drops in her ears. I cannot remember right now what the brand was, but the pharmacist can recommend one. If that doesn't work, you will have to have it removed by the doctor. Maybe once you get it soften you can use water as a flush to remove it.

My daughter just had her ears "irrigated" at the doctors office where they squirt in the water solution then used a plastic loop type device to reach in a grab out the loose pieces.

To keep my ears clean, I use a bobby pin. Yes, one of those old style bobby pins you can buy at walmart (60 for .59 cents).

The size of the end of the bobby pins are about the same size as that little plastic device the doctor's nurse uses to pull out the remaining wax when you go for that pricey office visit.

Carefully swab the inside of your ear canal with the loop end of the bobby pin and that little loop catches and pulls out all the loose stuff.

Since I've read some other posts I'm going to put in my disclaimer here LOL: Yes ladies, I know you "aren't supposed to stick stuff in your ears". This comment is in no way to be taken as a substitute for medical advice. Please take it as personal experience and opinion only.

My husband has TONS of earwax and this works for him. When he starts to get "hard of hearing" you lay down and put a tiny bit of hydrogen peroxide in your ear and let it sit and bubble for a few minutes. Then lay on that ear and let it drain out. Do this every day for a few days and that will really soften up all the wax. Then we take one of those small medicine seringes, the kind the pharmacist gives out with kids medicine, and squirt warm water in his ear as he leans over the sink. It usually takes a cup of water or so but it dislodges the earwax and it comes out in clumps in the sink. That little seringe can't fit into the ear and it gives just enough pressure to move that wax. If it doesn't work with that cup of water, just stop and keep using the hydrogen peroxide daily. Then try the water again. My husband has had some major amounts of wax in there and this works everytime.

Warm a spoon and pour hydrogen peroxide into it. Be careful to not let it be hot, just tepid. Lay your head on the side on a towel and pour it into your ear. Let it stay 1-2 minutes and turn over and let it run out. You can do this 3-4 times and repeat daily if needed.
They do spray warm water in with a syringe to dislodge it and then get it with their special pick, but you can probably do it the way I said.

You can use debrox drops....they should be over the counter. a few drops in the ear that is affected twice a day. People have also used a few drops of mineral oil. ( have not tried) But the debrox is what is typically used in the clinical setting.

The bulb syringe works well. Mom On the G O is spot on, but add a tablespoon or two of peroxide to the bowl of warm water. If have lots of wax you may need to repeat this a few times. The warm water and peroxide soften up the wax and what ever does not wash out the first time will come out the 2nd or 3rd time. Ear canals are a lot like caves - they have nooks and cranny's where the wax can build up into lumps which can then shift position and cause problems.

they make an OTC drop that breaks up the wax... it starts with a D and comes in a green and yellow box. my mom uses it on my brother when his ears get plugged. you just put a few drops in, let it set and bubble for a few minutes, and then suck it out using the aspirator in the box.

I did this exact same thing about 3 weeks ago. Debrox didn't make a difference. In fact, it made it worse somehow. I went with the old Grandma's recipe. Hot oil.

I heated up vegetable oil in (10secs) in the microwave, soaked a cotton ball and let it drain into my ear for about 5 minutes.
Then, Qtip away. I've become very accquainted with my inner ear at this stage. Get in there gently, but you really have to angle the Qtip and get in there in every possible direction. Did the trick for me.

There is an over the counter ear wax removal kit that my husband used and it works pretty well. First there are drops that you put in your ear to soften the wax then a bulb to put warm water in and flush the wax out. He used to have to go to the Dr to use the water pik type thing but has not been back since we discovered this. Depending on how blocked it is sometimes it takes a lot of flushing to get the wax out. Good luck, it is a lot cheaper than a Dr visit.

My son gets excessive wax build up....1 part vinegar to 1 part water. Put it in a squirt bottle (like the empty ketchup/mustard bottles with a tip and a fold-back lid - hope that makes sense. I use a clear one I had purchased in the kitchen utensils area of Wal-Mart) Squirt it in your ear. If you have a lot and it's really packed in there, you may be doing a lot of squirting. However, this is what they used at the doctor's office, just with a more medical supply-looking squirter. lol We do it each time he goes swimming, too. The vinegar displaces the water so it does not get trapped in his ear, behind the ear drum, etc. The only drawback is, you'll smell like a pickle afterwards, so you might want to do it before showering. ;-) Hope this helps!

Bulb syringe. Bowl of warm water. Squirt (hard). Hold head/ear over sink, bowl or towel to dislodge.

Once your ear is cleaned out, I'd put a few drops of rubbing alcohol in it. The alcohol helps any residual water evaporate and become sterilized, just in case there is any wax left or blockage in your ear. You won't end up getting an ear infection from left over water.

You can also do the bulb syringe thing monthly in the shower to prevent future clogs.

I read an article about this not too long ago (I have a kid with serious ear wax issues) the Candling and other hot liquids are not suggested. They prefer/suggested the OTC drops or peroxide and - you guessed it - time.
Hang in there. Also if you do a google search for "removing ear wax" some of the sites offer specific regimines for removing/dislodging.

The doctor told my mom to use peroxide in our ear when we were growing up and I still do that to my kids. My teenager was complaining that he could not hear and I did this and it helped right away.

omg you should NEVER put hot oil OR q-tips in your ear!! Q-tips jam the wax down further. They have drops over-the-counter that you can buy, and wax-removal kits. I prefer to have the doctor clean out my ear- they don't irrigate, they use a tool to dig out all the gunk. My left ear gets clogged a lot. It feels so good when they clean it!

Debrox. You can get it OTC and it comes with a bulb syringe (or if you already have one, you can just get the medicine).

I use a liquid solution from CVS/Walgreens that will push it out. Daily I use a little tool that has a small loop on it and clean out my ears daily. It has a guard on it that prevents it from going in too far......I buy that at CVS.
