HI, I am a 36 year old mother of 4. Just had my fourth child 2 mos ago, (Aug. 12). My blood pressure was fine during pregnancy, never about 130/80. I have been under a lot of stress these past few weeks, more than normal. I also have anxiety. I went to the doctor the other day for a BP check, I was just concerned, my head felt like it was in a vice for a week. (my period was due, and there was a lot of stressors going on). It was 155/102. I had it taken again at the gyn. the next day I believe, and it was 130/80 when she took it. I took it at home a few times, too. It ranged from good to bad to both.

Does this all seem stress related, or should I be worried. I go to my PC tomorrow at 2, and am afraid I will have a high reading, not just because it may be up, but because I may be worrying about it too much before hand, ya know.

I really need some reassurance here, I'm slightly terrified right now.

Any help appreciated.

Thank you,

L.

So What Happened?

Well ladies,
After a very long week of major stress and anxiety, tension headaches and much needed support from my sister and mom, I went to see a dif. doc today. One that actually listened to ME, not just my body, ya know. My pressure was 124/90 when the nurse first took it and then after waiting for the doc for 40 min and talking to my sis, then talking to the doc for 10 min, it was 125/80. SIIIIIIIGH. I am soo relieved. I still want to keep up the healthier ways I've started a few days ago, aka. walking, eating better, and hopefully quitting smoking, (trying to cut down till that day comes). I was soo obsessed with taking my pressure, that I was never relaxed when taking it, so it was always reading high. Wow what the mind can do to ya if ya let it. He still told me to take the xanax on an as need basis, which I may try, maybe. But I want to thank all of you who responded. It's so nice to have people to reach out to when you think you are alone.

God Bless you all with health, happiness and joy.

L.

It could be stress related. You have 4children one of which is still an infant.I'm sure you aren't sleeping properly/getting alot of sleep. And than normal everyday stress on top of that.
It's good you are getting checked out by your dr.But try to"relax"some.I know i have had the heart in the vice feeling alot and mine is all stress related.I have learned different relaxtion techniques(sp)and that has help. The biggest help has been the breathing to relax.
Try taking several deep breaths with your eyes closed and just relax..it really does help.
But please keep us posted.

Try to relax. If there is a reason for it to be high, then you want your pcp to know so that they can monitor it and treat it. Even if it is normal tomorrow, talk to you pcp about it. Either you will find out there is nothing to worry about or the two of you will come up with a plan of action to treat the problem.

Good luck.

Hi L.,

My blood pressure readings were high during and after pregnancy for several months. Since January I've lost 37 lbs. and that seems to have helped with lowering my blood pressure. Of course, I'm also 35 and have a history of blood pressure and cholesterol problems in my family. My midwife and PC monitor my blood pressure pretty closely, but booth seem to think that my range doesn't warrant the use of drugs. And, this week I had a reading of 112/80. I was consistantly getting readings in the high range you mentioned.

So, what does all this mean? Keep track of it with your PC, but it may simply be hereditary, which can be controlled with drugs, or it may be a simple matter of weight gain.

Not sure if this helps, but good luck.

My blood pressure went up after pergnancy but I was borderline pre-eclamptic during my 1st pregnancy. When I visited my PC, he just suggested watching my pressure for a while since stress is a big insult to your pressure. Also I had to go off of the birth control pill that I was on and that also helped my pressure. My doctor said that it is pretty normal for your pressure to fluctuate like this and that a diagnosis of high blood pressure comes only after you have had many consecutive high blood pressure readings over a period of time.

L., the more you worry about it the worse it will be. You need to find the time and a way to de-stress yourself. Take a few moments alone and drink some hot tea or hot chocolate. Take an extra long shower, hide in the bathroom and read a book. Take a walk. High blood pressure a few times is not the end of the world nor an indication of a real problem. But you can make it one if you focus on it too much. Relax, everything will work out in the end. Congrats & good luck
