Everybody loves iPhones because they are very intuitive (easy to learn how to use) and highly capable. If you are new to the technology but want to the capabilities of a new phone (apps, browser, email, etc.) I think that's a great choice. :)
Hello everyone
I am looking to buy a new phone.. it needn't be fancy and do a ton of things.. I would like a few features such as camera, be able to download apps (for things like directions) and the ability to access email, maybe send a few texts at times..
my current phone, well it's VERY old and doesn't do much other than dialing.. :) oh and I would prefer a phone with a wide screen..
any suggestions and what you like about your phone.. again, I want to keep it simple.. but there are so many phones from which to choose, I'd like to know what others suggest.
Thanks so much

I have an IPhone 5 that I love love love! I was going to step up to a 6 but the one I have does all I need a phone to do and more, so I'm happy with it.
Good luck. Phone shopping, how fun! :)
ETA: Church of Apple... Too funny
I don't know what your price range is or what service provider you have but we use the IPhone 6 in our family.
We started using the IPhones when they first came out and we've had each version. We love them.
The 6 probably has more features than you are looking for but the camera is very good and the screen is nice as well. This phone still fits in my pocket which is a plus.
I can run our company with my phone and not have to take my laptop with me when I travel. I LOVE that feature and it is so much easier going through security with my phone vs my laptop! It has a health app on it which works like a pedometer when it is in my pocket and keeps tracks of my steps. I love that feature as well. We have the phones with the highest amount of GB you can get. You can save some money if you get a lower GB, just make sure you don't underestimate your needs.
We use our phones for business so my bill is a bit higher with all unlimited data, texting, international, and insurance which is about $260 a month for all 3 of us.
IPhone is my favorite but there are some other great options in the market as well.
I agree that the 4S is a great phone.
Good luck.
Get an iPhone. Super easy to use, reliable, and once you figure it out, you'll find that there are so many ways in which it can make your life easier.
I'm the odd one out. I had an iPhone for years, even upgraded to the 4 when it came out. I thought it was the cat's meow. Then the battery wouldn't stay charged. And it kept crashing. And every decent app cost something.
So I decided to leave the Church of Apple and try a Samsung Galaxy/Android phone.
I'll never go back. I love how I can personalize my phone, it's easy to use, I've not paid for one app, the battery lasts and lasts, and it never crashes. You couldn't pay me to buy another iPhone.
I have an iPhone 4S. It is several versions old, but it still does everything I need, including everything you mention so I see no reason to upgrade.
If you sign a contract, this version is probably free most places, since apple is up to version 6 now and by their standards, the 4S is ancient :).
ETA: LOL, yeah, Church of Apple. Last time I wanted a new phone (I had the 3, and I wanted a rear-facing camera), I thought about switching from iPhone to android, and just couldn't bring myself to try to get over the learning curve. So I took the lazy way out and stayed with iPhone. I do like the iPhone though, I'm happy with it. The only thing that sometimes frustrates me is that otherwise I'm all PC and no Apple products, and sometimes iPhone and Microsoft Outlook, which I use for all my email and calendar stuff, don't play nicely. For example, I have distribution lists set up in my Outlook contacts, and those don't show up on my phone, so I can't email to my lists from my phone. So Church of Apple isn't all glorious ;)
Love my iphone 6. Had an iphone 4s for two years before that and loved that too.
I'm with Christy Lee ~ I have an Android (Galaxy S4) and LOVE it.
"Church of Apple".. hahah
I do suggest you try one out at a store. Go play around some. I have the 6 (with 64G), my kids have 5s and my husband inherited my hand-me-down 4s when his flip phone finally kicked the bucket in December.
I am not a "techie" so I really don't care that much about all the nuances of how personal you can make it or whatever. I just want it to work. And it does. Beautifully.
We also have Apple products in our home, and it makes for a pretty seamless fit with all the products/charging cords, etc. I can check my email on my phone, my ipad, or the computer... or my husband's phone. I can track my exercise, my water intake, see when electronic transactions are applied to my credit card (instant notifications), etc.
I have no issues with battery life. And the 6 has a bit wider screen. If you really wanted big you could do 6plus, but those are too big for me.
Paying for apps? Meh... I have iTunes cards sitting around unused, b/c I get most of what I want/need free, or found it early on and just put it on my new device from the iTunes store. Once it's bought, we own it. My kids and husband can use those same apps without paying for them again.
And try Waze (for directions). You'll like it. :)
I would suggest that you don't buy the smallest memory on whatever you get. Sometimes updates eat up a bit of memory. Not usually a problem, unless you like to carry around an exhorbitant amount of data/apps/music, etc. My husband has almost no apps that weren't originally installed, b/c he just isn't into that. But he has TONS of music.
after several years of being a devout church of apple (hee!) devotee, i'm done. my 2nd mac mini is a 2nd lemon, and the iphone has a lot of great qualities, but my older son (also apostate) has a galaxy that looks way better, and without all the mingey control issues that the iphones have.
i think i'll be moving when it's time to upgrade my current I5.

I have the iphone 6, the big one. I also have the iphone 5 for work. Its drives me nuts going from big to small. I actually like the big iphone.
I vote big iphone 6. =)
I went with a HTC M8 because it was $100. I'm a phone dropper so I figured why spend a lot of money for something I'll drop a million times before it stopped working. Love it. The funny part? I put a protective case on it and haven't dropped it a single time.
The Note phone is huge and I can't always find the ear part and miss parts of the conversation.
The S4 is good. I like how it works and I like the feel of it. I like the camera too, it takes pretty good pictures.
I'm still using an iPhone 4S and don't intend to give it up until I get a free upgrade. I won't pay $400-$600 for a phone.
I'm not sure there is anything other than a smart phone or a basic phone, and the basic phone is not going to do anything other than talk and text (so no email).
If you want any apps or email, you're going to have to get a smart phone. The choice is basically IPhone or Android (and that includes Samsung). I chose the IPhone because I already had an IPad from work. The IPhone is pretty much the same thing as an IPad or and IPod that also makes phone calls. My husband has an Android and I have no idea how it works.
Do you already have a tablet of some kind? If you do, that might help you make your decision.
We belong to the "church of apple". We have everything apple. I love my iPhone 6 plus. I'm not a techy person so thats why I have all apple.
My sis is an android girl and she just texted me from iPhone 6 plus this morning. She got sick of viruses on her android and had several bad experiences with getting refurbished phones when the phone was under warranty.
