Need a Crib/toddler Bed Mattress for 15 Mo Old

We are moving my daughter into her "big girl" room in prep for Baby #2 arriving in July. We bought a convertable crib for the room that can be made into a toddler bed, but need to get a new mattress. I've read conflicting things re: coil vs. foam, firm vs. softer for toddlers, etc. Any suggestions on good mattresses for Year 2??

We've used the same mattress for my 3 year old that she's had since she was a newborn. I forget the name brand, but it is an extra firm foam mattress (got it at Baby Furniture Warehouse). I like it so much better than coil mattresses because it is lightweight (making sheet changes so much easier!). She is now in a toddler bed with the same mattress. I was in a similar situation as you with the age difference (my oldest is 19 months older than her little sis). We kept our oldest in her crib until she was 2 years, 9 mos. old. Our plan is to keep her in the toddler bed until my baby is almost 3, then we can switch our oldest to a big-girl bed, and our baby to the toddler bed. Congratulations and good luck!

If you're investing anyway, I would find a good organic mattress like Nature's Rest. Expensive but the only one you'll need and worth it...regular mattresses have SO much toxic junk in them!!!

I want to echo what the first poster said about buying organic. Most new mattresses and many other plastics and vinyl emit Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) that are known to be toxic to humans, especially infants. I would buy an organic mattress for the baby crib (given how much time babies spend in their crib), and then I would use your existing crib mattress for Gracie. The VOC's in her crib should have mostly dissipated by now. If money is an issue, I would buy a used mattress in good condition, since the level of VOC's should be much less than with a new mattress.
Good luck!
