Neck Rest for Car Travel

We are taking a road trip this summer and I've been looking at neck rests for my toddler. We're leaving in the wee hours of the morning and we really want to make him comfortable while he's sleeping in his carseat. There seems to be quite a few options, but I was wondering if anyone had a road-tested recommendation?

Thank you!
M.

Aftermarket products are not safe to use in a car seat , and a toddler should still be in a 5pt harness car seat. A 5pt harness convertible should have adequate recline so a childs head doesn't bob. If you need help installing your seat properly, so your childs head doesn't bob, please find a CPST in your area through www.safekids.org

If you have a convertible car seat and your child is under 35lbs and has more than 1" of shell above his head, turn him back rear facing. The AAP recommends children remain rear facing as long as possible, until the rear facing car seat is outgrown. And in the rear facing position, the seat can be reclined much more, and your son will sleep alot easier. Please google EXTENDED REAR FACING for more information.

I found a really cute neck rest in Target. It is a pink piggy that wraps around her neck. To be honest, she just holds it, she doesn't want it on her neck, as well, I have tried them too and don't use them.

The ones at Target (as Carla says) really are cute. We've not needed to use them with our kids. We took 2 long road trips over Christmas with our kids (300 miles each way to Cleveland and 600 miles each way to DC) at 20 months and 3.5 years. They did fine without any neck supports, but I've also wondered about getting them.

My only other advice might be to check a site such as One Step Ahead and see what they offer and what reviews might be available.

When my eldest was younger we went on a car trip and left in the middle of the night so she could sleep. I found these things at babies r us that worked great. I don't remember what they're called, but they are pads (2) that attatch to the shoulder straps of the car seat. You put them up kind of high and when they lean to the left or right they rest on the pads.

We have also used the neck wraps for kids but they don't seem to work as well. Both my girls complain that they bother them behind their necks.

I would definately recommend trying to find these pads. They worked awesome.

I'm not sure what kind of carseat you have, but maybe it is too upright if your child needs a neck rest. We have a Marathon, and my 20 month old son has always been fine for long drives, including several 8 hour drives. We have even done the 8 hours with his old Graco infant seat, and he was incredibly comfortable with no additional stuff. Our guy is still rear facing, so his seat is at the most horizontal setting (still pretty upright, but I think that does help).
