Navel Rupture

I have a 3 month old granddaughter that has a rupture on her navel. The doctor told my daughter that it would correct itself and if not they could operate in two to three years. We used to put a silver dollar on them, when my kids were small - or use the belly-bands. This looks awful and I am concerned about doing nothing. I know there is no medical proof that doing anything helps, but there is also no medical proof that it doesn't. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The twins are now 5 months old and her navel is almost completely in. They did nothing for it and it did go back in on it's own. I never would have believed it the way it looked. Thank you for all your responses.

My first born was like that. I took him to the Doc and they said the same thing- she even said I could tape a nikel to it lol- But he did grow out of it when he was just a little over one. They say that the stomache muscle just isn't strong enough to hold it down yet. Good luck and I hope this was helpful :)

My oldest had it and I didn't do anything. I agree that it is unsightly, but it will correct itself. She is now 5 and you'd never know that anything was ever wrong.

the more nutrition that tear gets, the faster it can heal. think about delivering nutrients to it through diet, applying herbal creams near the site (I recommend Dr. Christopher's complete tissue and bone formula), keep away from toxic chemicals and deliver plenty of oxygen to the site. of course you will want to keep it clean.

the more the body has access to nutrients, the faster it will heal itself.

My twins were premature and one had a hernia in her belly button that was like that. You could feel the tear if you put your pinky on her belly button, especially when she was crying. They said the same thing, 90% close up on their own by the time the baby is one. That is exactly what happened, it closed up on its own and she is perfectly healthy...I think it was much more stressful for us looking at it than it ever was for her having it!

No worries Betty!! My little five month old girl had that as well!! It was scary and creepy looking to me!! So naturally it worried me. However, we were told the same information and were surprised to see it completely gone by four months. We didn't put anything on her and it went away just fine!! Patience is the only thing you need but your 3 month old will be back to normal soon!!

My first daughter had a small hernia and it corrected itself within the first year as her muscles started to get stronger after she learned to sit, crawl, etc.

My second daughter had the opposite....a huge outie that I was concerned about. She is now 6 months old and it is correcting itself as well as her muscles in her abdomen get stronger.

Just give it some time and I am sure it will be fine!

Hi B.,

My fourth (and last) baby was born with a hernia rupture on his belly button, as well. They told us that they don't operate anymore, either, until they're older, because it is dangerous. They also said that they do not do the silver dollar thing anymore. I talked to my husband's grandma about it and she said that my husband and his dad were both born with the same problem and that the silver dollar thing worked for them. I didn't do it with my son; just left it alone. He turned a year old yesterday and he is just fine. His belly button still pokes out a little but is much better than it was a year ago. It's getting better and I think will soon be completely in. Good luck!

My son had surgery for it. I think we waited until he was about 6 months old tho...because it does correct itself a lot of the time. I worried about his too - it was pretty scary looking, but he was fine until he went in and had the surgery.

Now he has a lovely little belly button! Oh, and it was just outpatient surgery, so not complicated at all.

My daughter had a hernia on her belly button. The specialist told us that the worst thing we could do was put the silver dollar on them. That those who do are usually the ones who end up needing the surgery. Good luck with whatever they decide. :) my daughter grew out of everything and is just fine. No surgery was needed.

My daughter was around 10 months old when she had surgery for ruptured herniated belly button. Huge mistake. The doctor didn't even correct another hernia while he was doing the surgery. And when I took her in for later about a year after because of this that pediatric surgeon said she refused to do those surgeries until they were 2 because it is true as they grow the body can correct itself. As long as your granddaughter has no pain from it she is just fine and since my daughter's has corrected itself.

My second daughter had one. Her Dr. also said it would correct itself. When she was 6 months old... I took her to a surgeon when it wasn't getting smaller. He took notes and measured it. I took her back 5 months later and it had gotten bigger! We had surgery to close it. He said this is rare that they get bigger. Now we tease her that she has a tummy tuck already. The only thing left is a small smiley faced scar just below her belly button. Use your instincts and get a second opinion if needed.

My daughter was a preemie, she was about 2 1/2 mths early. She also had this happen with her navel. It really worried me and the doctor said the same thing. It didn't seem to bother her so I just waited. I noticed that the stronger her stomach muscles got the more her navel went in. And it did correct itself. She is now 10 and has a totally normal navel and never had any other problems from it. I'm sure your grandbaby will do fine. Even though they're little, babies are pretty tough. Hope this helps.....

Hi Betty,
My daughter had the same thing. The doctor also told me they would operate when she got older. That was not acceptable to me so we did the old remedy of the silver dollar, which the doctor told me would not work, I did it anyway. Well my daughter is 17 and she has a very beautiful belly button. And no surgery.
It certainly won't hurt her.
good-luck

Hi! My son had the same thing, and my Dr. said the same thing. He is now 11 months old and at about 6 months his belly button just one day looked completely normal. It freaked me out though too because it looked so uncomfortable, but the Dr said it didn't hurt him.

By rupture, do you mean her belly-button pokes out? I think it's correctly called an umbilical hernia. If so, my daughter had this condition. our pediatrician recommended that we tape a quarter over her belly-button, then wait and see if the condition resolves itself. (He confided that this non-invasive treatment is often done in the latino community.) Well, it worked like a charm! I got some clear medical adhesive (tape) from the doctors office. I taped the quarter, and then taped that over her belly-button. Then I would reposition the quarter (moving the tape) so as not to cause irritation to my daughters skin, after her bath. I say give it a try! Anything is better than surgery. We used this method for most of her first year. I still have the taped quarter!
Good Luck

My youngest had a tiny navel hernia when he was about 3 months old. My Dr. told me the same thing, that it would go away by itself, or if it got worse we could do surgery. I ended up using Athletic tape and a nickel, within a month it was gone. I would suggest using a quarter or whatever coin you have that is bigger around than the hernia, and tping it down. It can't hurt, just remember to get the tape wet and soapy (during daily bath) before you take it off, otherwise you can peel baby's tender skin. Hope it all works out well, I know surgery at such a young age can be scary.
