Nauseated While Breastfeeding...

I have read, and my doctor told me that experiencing nausea while breastfeeding is normal---but that was in the first few weeks after my daughter was born. She is now 5 months old and I still experience it while nursing, sometimes when getting ready to nurse and sometimes will pumping. Is this common?

What can I do next?

I had never heard of this! I found some info on why it could still be happening and things that might help:

I have heard many, many reasons as to why this happens too. I nursed both of my children for the entire first year, and I would experience waves of nausea at times while nursing them. I would always have a cup of cold water next to me and I would sip it throughout the feeding. That's what helped me...good luck and kuddos to you for sticking it out.

Glad to hear someone else experiencing this. Yes...I have to assume it's normal. I was really sick for the first 2-3 months after my son was born, nauseated all the time and it really made sticking with BF very difficult. Later on and even now (he's 2 and still BF) I get nauseated sometimes, moreso if I go too long without nursing and get full. I know it's very uncomfortable, best thing I can say is nurse often and drink a lot of fluids.

Could it possibly be a mind thing? As in you associate nursing with something upsetting or obscene? I hope you can get to the root of the issue and continue breastfeeding successfully!!

A lot of love and relaxation hormones are released in both you and baby while nursing... that may be a very small part of it. I've never heard nor experienced a woman getting nausea when nursing.

My sister was occassionally nauseous while nursing and her doc suggested keeping a glass of cold water nearby to stay hydrated. My doctor reminded me continuously while nursing to over-hydrate myself (meaning drink more than you think you need to) to stave-off the dehydration symptoms, one of which is nausea.
