Natural Remedies for Reflux

we have been on prevacid for the past 3months and the dr suggested that we take him off of it. He is 5 and a half months. Prevacid worked like magic and he was so much better! The prevacid prevents the stomach from making acid. When he prescribed the medicine we (husband, dr, and I) decided that this was going to be a short term solution because that is pretty extreme...we need our stomache acid to help us break food down. Not to mention that my husband and I don't like the idea of medicating a baby. It is a fairly new treatment which means we don't know very much about long term affects. At his four month check up our ped said that there is some rising speculation that prevacid and infants, if used over a long period of time, may affect their bone density. That coupled with the fact that we just don't use a lot of medicine in our house really makes me want to find something more natural. His reflux is coming back, yesterday it seemed full on but it seems better right now, and was wondering what natural remedies any of you mommas had luck with or if he will regulate himself with time-after adjusting to having his stomache acid back.
thanks

Sorry but I can't say that I know anything natural and I really tried alot of different things like Gripewater but NOTHING helped, not even other prescriptions but for Zantac liquid. I hated giving to my son but he was in pain and cried all the time and was never able to rest and it was only for a few months until he got older then I could wean him off. Also a product called a tucker sling helped us alot. It's to elevate him while he sleeps. It helped him sleep alot better too.
So sorry for him having reflux, it can be a very trying time for all. Hope you can find your answer and he grows out of it.
I do think that his problem will get better in time but probably not till he is sitting and standing on his own.
Best Regards,
C.

Are you breastfeeding or formula feeding? Sometimes bottle feeding sometimes leads to overfeeding, which can lead to more spitting up and reflux - it isn't really a sickness, but a result of them getting too much food in their tiny bellies. If you are breastfeeding, there is a possibility that something in your diet is not sitting well in his belly (usually dairy, tomatos or caffeine.) Since he is so young, any dietary type supplement isn't recommended. You could try liquid probiotics though - just a little drop every day to readjust the good bacteria in his belly.
If he's formula fed, try switching types and brands.
His gut probably does need time to re-adjust to being back to "normal" though.

Good luck!

I have heard that chiropractic care with someone who specializes in kids can be very helpful. If your son (I'm assuming he's young from your description) had a somewhat traumatic birth (c-section, vacuum or forceps), or even just a normal birth, their little spines can go out of alignment. I don't know of any other remedies other than smaller meals more frequently, and remaining upright. I hope it works out!

Not sure how old he is, but he is obviously not breaking down his food at all or having an allergy to something he is ingesting. try digestive enzymes, which one will depend on how old. There are gummy bear digestive enzymes or liquid for formulas and milk. If he was vaccinated I would hold off on any further until his gut is repaired.

Try Gripe Water by Baby Bliss. It is totally natural and you can get it at Walgreens and most grocery stores. I had great luck with it so it is worth a try.

Good luck!

Who is on Prevacid? I've taken a similar medicine and read in several homeopathic and natural publications that one can drink 1 T of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water daily to eliminate GERD. I tried this and gave up after a couple of weeks. The vinegar tasted so bad and the reflux was continuing to get worse.

If this is your son, then I don't know if you can try giving him apple cider vinegar.

The theory is that the reflux is actually caused by not having enough stomach acid and the vinegar increases the acid which is then used by your stomach. By taking the Prevacid or ? we are eliminating all acid and our stomach doesn't adequately digest our food. I don't really understand this and wish that a scientist with a diploma and recognized in a medical field could explain this in a way to be easily understood and describe the process of using vinegar or anything else in an effective way to include how long this should take.
