A single serving of applesauce daily is the best bowel regulator! A good probiotic taken daily will also help too, recommended to me by an ND. Cut down on constipating foods like cookies, crackers, bananas.
My little man (2 1/2) has struggled with constipation his entire life. He eats tons of fruits and vegetables, drinks apple juice, and nothing seems to help him go. His dr wants to put him on Miralax for the next 6 months. However the labels say do not stay on it more than two weeks. Anybody have an all natural remedy I can give him on a daily basis?

Apples are a regulator. If you can't poop, they help. If you have diarrhea, they help.
BUT:
Apple juice can cause problems. STOP giving the apple juice and see if it helps. Instead, give him plenty of water and oranges and apples.
Cut down on breads, potatoes, corn (or corn products: cereal, chips, cornbread (corndogs), popcorn), starchy foods.
I hope it helps. :o)
Blessings,

My DD has been on Miralax for a year now!!!! I would love to know if anything works for you. If I even miss one day she has rabbit poo the next. If I miss three days...she is in full constipation (compacted) and screaming in pain.
I forgot it on our vacation trip and ended up having to do a liquid supository for her to help get it out. I felt so bad :-(
Vitamin C and magnesium are both natural laxitives. Emer-gen-C packets are fine for kids - they make one especially for kids that also has multivitamins, so no more than one per day. Also, Natural calm makes a magnesium for kids - there's really no limit as obviously an excess is excreted.
Also, I strongly recommend he be tested for celiac/gluten intolerance. Constipation was the primary symptom that my youngest son had and had the same good diet that you mention. IMHO, his doctor is not familiar with common symtpoms of celiac/gluten intolerance since he'd prefer to put him on Miralax rather than run a simple test. The most accurate test is the stool test available from enterolab: www.enterolab.com
You don't need a doctor to order it. If it's positive there is no drug to take, a gluten free diet is all that is required.
As a point of reference and crossing the threshold for TMI, my son wasn't diagnosed until he was 8 and after a few weeks on the diet he came to me and said he pooped without it hurting. He had never had a single BM that didn't hurt (severe intestinal cramping, etc.), so he just thought that was normal.
There are 2+ million people that have this disease that have yet to be diagnosed because most doctors don't have a clue about the impact of the foods we eat on health and most were taught this disease is rare. I could go on and on, but there is research showing how common it is and the fact that only about 6% of the people that have it have been diagnosed. The incidence in kids with GI problems is 50% per a top pediatric GI doctor in New Zealand (i.e., 50% of the patients that are referred to him are positive for antibodies to gluten - the protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats) and he only uses a blood test, which is less accurate than the enterolab test.
Have you tried massage? My friend's son had constipation problems and I rubbed his feet on the reflexology spots and he went that night!
My youngest also had tummy problems and I rubbed his belly and he woke up with a dirty diaper. It really helps! You just have to make sure you're massaging in the right direction on the abdomen or you can stop them up more.
PM me if you want more info. (I have completed massage courses)
I second the flax seed. It does wonders and has essencial oils also.
I have a 2.5 year old and we go through the same thing. I've used Miralax(tasteless and odorless) and it has worked great. She doesn't complain about any pain what so ever. It usually takes two doses for her. I don't give it to her daily, just when I noticed constipation, but her pediatrician says its ok to take daily, but I'm not planning on doing that.
Make sure he drinks plenty of water. It's a great laxative.
Dear G.,
I have a 2 1/2 year old son too. I springle Flaxseed meal in his food. That really helps him "go". Hope this helps.
we had the same problem with my dd. we used miralax (1/2 a capful) every morning and it worked great and had no other issues. that was last year and now if she gets a little cp i give her strawberry milk and it works pretty quick. also i've read that apple juice actually causes cp due to the pectin that is in but we also use white grape juice daily to help.
good luck.
Hi G., prune juice works great, you can also try diluting it with half water. Maybe he will try the dried prunes, or the pureed baby food prunes. This always worked with all three of my children. Hope that helps, good luck!
prune juice is a natural remedy...and so is castor oil
You can give him a probiotic every day. It is completely safe and good for him. My sons doc recommended I open a capsule into his cereal everyday when he was 1 and 1/2. He was on antibiotics a lot which has some bad side effects. You can get Culturelle at Walmart or any other probiotic at most stores. Google benefits of probiotics. Hope your little man is feeling better soon.
Hello G.,
1/2 or 1 tsp milk of magnesia will help a lot. (milk of magnesia is just magesium with water). My daughter had the same issue and she was on miralax for a little bit. then I figured out that MILK was the culprite. whenever she has milk products she gets constipated. and according to blood tests, she's NOT allergic to milk.
Anyways, here is a google search link for "milk + constipation"
http://www.google.com/search?q=milk+%2B+constipation&...
by the way, pears have a lot of fiber too and you can add some pear "baby" food to his "milk" (I use soy or oat milk with my kids)
Good luck! ~C.~
I had to add additional water to my daughters diet along with prune juice everyday. She is much better but still needs Miralax on occasion. Sometimes we all get out of whack. HTH
I don't have a natural remedy however, can I suggest that if you give him myralax-please do not give him the whole amt. that is prescribed, it will make his stomach hurt even worse. I have to use myralax and it works very well but it can cause some serious stomach cramps. HTH
Castor oil worked wonders for my son. And then lime water if he ever gets diarrhea.
