Natural Cold Treatments You All Have Found to Be Effective over the Years?

I have a 15 mos old who has a cold. I know of various natural treatments, but I was just wondering of your experiences out there. She won't do soup, and I am giving her homeopathics and some glycerite herbal formulas and lots of water. Any other suggestions? Right now she just has a stuffy nose (as far as I can tell) and is generally unhappy.

What can I do next?

If you are still nursing, nurse more! Honey is fine at her age, as I know someone mentioned concern for that. I would also suggest buying the dry herbs and making your own tea/infusion/decoction and then making popsicles out of it.

I've always done Echinacea and they have liquid. Just watch that she isn't allergic to it because my hubby and one child are... but with my other children, it works great. Also, vitamin C, D3, zinc etc. Colloidal silver is good and has no taste. My hubby won't let me use that because he is afraid they'll turn silver. But a couple of drops will help and not turn her silver... LOL Also, try swabbing her nose with a qtip dipped in warm salt water twice a day... I hope she feels better soon!

Below is his advice on dosing with Echinacea:
http://askdrsears.com/html/8/T081900.asp
Echinacea is an herb that has been found to boost the immune system. Medical research has shown it to be safe and effective in decreasing the frequency, duration, and severity of common illnesses such as ear and sinus infections, colds, and the flu. If you or your child is experiencing an unsual number of these illnesses, we suggest you try this remedy.
Echinacea comes in both adult tablets and liquid, as well as children’s chewables and drops. The adult tablets usually specify the number of milligrams per tablet, and the adult liquid (contains alcohol) is usually 1000 mg per teaspoon. The children’s chewables may state the milligrams, but the drops often don’t. There should be a recommended number of drops according to the child’s weight. Children’s drops may be added to juice or food.

There are two ways to take Echinacea:

PREVENTION – to prevent recurrent illnesses, especially during the winter season, take the following doses daily.

8 WEEKS ON, AND 2 WEEKS OFF:

Adults and teenagers – 1000 mg once a day
Children 4 to 12 – 500 mg once a day
Children 6 months to 3 years – 250 mg once a day
Note: if using the children’s drops, just give the recommended number of drops once a day.
Some researchers feel that periodically stopping Echinacea helps it stay effective during use.
CONTINUOUS USE: There is also research that shows there is NO NEED to periodically go off Echinacea to keep it effective. You can decide.

2 WEEKS ON AND 2 WEEKS OFF:

Some research has shown this schedule is also effective and may be preferable to the 8 weeks schedule above. Try either one and see which works best for you.

TREATMENT – at the first sign of any illness, begin taking the following doses:

Adults and teenagers – 2000 mg 3 times a day for 2 days, then 1000 mg 3 times a day for 7 more days.
Children 4 to 12 – 1000 mg 3 times a day for 2 days, then 500 mg 3 times a day for 7 more days.
Children 6 months to 3 years – 500 mg (or double the recommended number of drops) three times a day for 2 days, then 250 mg (or the regular number of drops) 3 times a day for 7 more days
WHERE TO BUY IT

Echinacea is available at most health food and nutrition stores.

Hello L.,

When my daughter has a cold I use a cool mist humidifier in her room to keep the stuffiness and dry throat under control. For a cough I like to use a teaspoon to a tablespoon of raw honey right off the spoon. I do not know how or why it works but it does every time.

Vicks baby rub for my little guys was always a calming and effective treatment- especially at night. Also, they have bubble bath now with that same vapor in it... I run a warm bath with the vapor bubbles and just let them play. It really helps with the crankiness!

I'm a big fan of saline drops up the nose followed shortly after by the snot sucker. Since babies can't blow their nose, this helps clear them out so they can breathe. The babies HATE it, I should warn you. There's no medecine, but you do want to be careful with the tender skin inside their littlenoses. See if you can get a bulb from the hospital-they work a little better than the blue ones you buy in the store.

P.s. Double check the recommended age for honey. I thought it was 2, but I could be wrong. It has a bacteria in it that can be harmful to young babies.
