Natural Childbirth Possible at Las Colinas Medical Center?

Hi, I was reading some of the other threads here and got intimidated by reading about the high rates of C Sections in LCMC. I really want to have a natural child birth and don't want to be another victim of the broken system. Is there a link that lists out what % of child births are C sections in each hospital ? My doctor is Steven Hoffman and seems okay, but I'm not sure if he'll push for C Section at the slightest complication.

I have a friend/neighbor who had 2 deliveries there. Both were unmedicated. I think what really matters is your Dr and delivery staff. Also, I think it depends a lot on the actual pregnancy. If you can get a Doula to help, even better I think. I would recommend it. Even with the best docs with the lowest c-s rates (that was mine btw), sometimes a c-s is unavoidalbe. I think your best bet is to educate / advocate for yourself. I took some really great Bradley classes in Richardson and would recommend them if you interested.

Good luck!

I had a baby at LCMC 7 years ago and Steven Hoffman (who is awesome by the way) tried everything possible to avoid me having a C-section. I was 39 years old, my baby was a week late and already 8 lbs. according to the sonogram.I was barely dialated when he had me go to the hospital so he tried to give me a drug that would get me to dialate then after 5 hours he finally broke my water hoping that would help, but when he saw some distress at that point he finally decided I had to have a C-section for the safety of the baby. He really did above and beyond everything he could do to avoid the C-section, which by the way was no big recovering deal--I was driving by 2 weeks after. Congrats on your new baby!

Be sure to write out a birth plan. Also, if you need to have your baby at a hospital, I would definitely spring for a Doula. She will be your advocate and help you labor at home before you get admitted to the hospital. Doula's are trained to know when you need to go to the hospital in your labor process and ease you through the different transitions in the comfort of your own home.
Also, if you get pitocin or an epidural you are more likely to get in a position for a C-section due to the way the drugs affect the uterus and the baby's respiration. So, if you really want natural birth, that's the only way to go.
If you really want the chance to have a wonderful and natural birth experience, where you are in complete control and your husband will even get to participate (catch the baby), you should consider a birthing center with a midwife. I had both my children at Birth & Women's Center in Dallas. There website is: www.birthcenter.net. It's fantastic and they will support you with your birth decisions and help you through your labor beautifully. You can even choose during your labor if you want to have a water birth, squatting, or in the antique, four-poster bed. I would seriously consider it even though you already started your pre-natal care with an OB. They will be happy to get your records and start where he left off. (It's considerably cheaper too and my insurance covered it!)
If anything should go wrong (which is rare), they have strict guidelines that they go by and they transfer you to Baylor Dallas, which is a 30-sec car ride to their front door. By the time you get there they will have a room ready for you and an OB that they work with on call.
HOpe this helpsf! Congrats on your pregnancy. If you would like to talk to me further about my birth experiences, just email me personally! GOD Bless!

Hi, I would love to see some stats like that for doctors and hospitals in the area! I am due with #2 in Feb and I have chosen a midwife. She delivers at Allen Presby and Mckinney hospitals. I'm a little too chicken for a birth center.
Just know that you don't have to deliver at a certain hospital just because it's the closest one.

I don't know the stats exactly, but my birth center would. I know it's late in the game, but they are incredible. The head midwife was a high risk pregnancy nurse and they have a docotr on call just 5 minutes up the road should the need arise. i went to birthing class with a girl who wanted a natural childbirth and even went over it with her doctor only to be pushed through the process as they do every other birth. I had my baby girl at Innana birth Center in denton and would do it again in a heartbeat. Good luck to you!

Hi Mary:

I am sorry that I don't have many things good to say about Las Colinas Medical Center.

First, which I guess depends on the individual doctor, I only pushed for about a 1/2 hour before I was prepped for a c-section. "The baby was stuck". But this is not what bothered me at all.

The nurse I had at check-in and throughout my entire pre-labor and post-labor was just awful! She never spoke to me - ever. She would just grab a body part and yank it around to do what she wanted with it. After she broke my water, she let me lie in it for 4 hours. As I was pushing, she coughed into her hands, then proceded to touch me. My doc had to tell her to wash her hands. She stormed out of the room (!!!).

I was wheeled into the O.R. and the docs were talking, asked my nurse to do something and, once again, she stormed out! There was another nurse in there with complete street clothes on - no scrubs. In the Operating Room.

After surgery, the same awful nurse wouldn't give me anything for what I was going through. I was shaking uncontrolably for a long, long while. She was doing paperwork.

Within hours of having a cesarian, I was told by a different nurse (shift change) to take a shower. Nobody was there to help me. There was no stool to sit on in the shower. I could have passed out and nobody would have known.

I am comparing all of this to my first pregnancy, where I had fantastic nurses. I had a natural child birth and a nurse had me sitting on a stool in the shower while she bathed me. This birth was NOT at Los Colinas Medical Center.

I'm sorry to pass along my story, but, I figure the more information you have, you will be able to make the right decision for you and your baby!

Congratulations and good luck!

Hi - just wanted to mention that your birth plan may indicate natural birth, but complications may arise that necessitate a C (that's what happened to us). There's nothing wrong with that. Although I would agree that the US having the highest % of C's is mostly due to convenience. Also, if your OB suggests a C at the slightest complication, isn't that what's best for the baby - and most important?
