My daughter is 10 months old and is taking 2 naps a day. Sometimes she fights one of them and ends up only taking 1 nap but most of the time takes 2. I was wondering at what age do you transition them from 2 naps to 1 and what time of day is the best time for 1 nap?

What can I do next?

HEY..I think it depends on the child. Mine is a sleeper and needed it. I finally cut her down to one at 18mo!! She just needed the sleep and the adjustment was hard but I wouldn't rush it if they need it.

Hi. I have 2 kids and I transitioned them at about a year and 4 months just because I wanted them to take 1 long nap. It's hard at first because they are so tired but then you have the whole afternoon to get things done or take a nap yourself! I put mine down for one nap at 12 at first and then 1pm as they get used to it.

I don't quite remember when my toddler started taking only 1 nap, but we do it after lunchtime. Usually somewhere between 12:30-1:30. She's 19 months old now, and she just started napping only 1 hour... I feel the end of naps are in my near future :(

It all depends on the children to be honest. My daughter took 2 naps for over a year, and my son has been at 1 for as long as I can remember. My daughter gave up naps at around 3, but my son is 3 & 4months and still asks for a nap. So my advice would be not to fight it if she doesn't want to go down for both. Arrange her nap times to adjust. For example if she was taking a nap at 10 and 3, change it to 12-12:30. Most 1 year olds I know are still taking 2 naps a day, but they are sleeping less at night...so it is up to you which u prefer

I think somewhere between the age of a year and 15 months both of my kids went to one nap a day. They would go down for a nap anywhere between 12:30 and 2 in the afternoon. My daughter is 4 1/2 and still needs naps from time to time. She even asks for them a few times a week. So, just go with what your child trying to tell you.

good luck

Hi B.,
I also have a 10 month old. I think that around the time they turn 1yr they don't require a morning nap anymore. I'd like to hear what other moms have to say. I'm sure it varies from child to child.

Hi B.,

I have a 15mo. old. At 9mo. his naps were approximately one and a half to 2 hours long. At 10 mo. He started to resist going to bed for his mornning nap (10:30am) but once he was asleep he began to sleep for 2 to 2and a half hours. This was my indication that he was ready for one nap later in the day(11:30). Try keeping your little one up for longer but exspecting her to have one longer nap as well. Make sure she is fed before this nap so that hunger doesn't get in the way of sleep. Remember that it takes over a week to develop new sleep habits. I am a BabyWise mom. The book "Babywise" has helped guide me when it comes to the sleep and eating issues. Good Luck and Don't get frustrated! She'll Get It:>
Sincerely,
M.

I think the transition from 3 to 2 naps as well as from 2 to 1 nap, is solely based on the child. If your little one seems to be ready to make the switch, then do it. The worse that could happen is you would have a crappy day for one day and then you can switch back the next day.

I think the best time for a 1 time a day nap is right after lunch time. Feed your little one, let her play for about 30 minutes after eating and then put her down.

Good Luck!

I have three children and they all transitioned differently. I tend to be a very scheduled person and feel that sleep is a top priority for healthy children. I learned very quickly, that though I set the schedule, different children have different needs. My oldest took two, two-hour naps until she was eighteen months old. It took her almost 6 weeks to adjust to one nap. My second child switched to one nap sometime between 10 and 11 months with no adjustment period. My third child switched to one nap at 13 months with no adjustment period. As the parent, you have the freedom to try a new routine for a week or more and, if it doesn't work, switch back or try something different.

Hi,
I think my son (now 2.5 years) went to one nap around 10 months. Every child is different. That's the most importan thing to remember. When he started giving me a really hard time is when we went down to one nap. You just have to put them down when they seem sleepy. For him it was around 11 am and he slept until around 1 or 2. He eventually started not looking sleepy and fighting the early nap and we moved it later (around 1 pm ). It was wonderful to me when he went to 1 nap because then he took a long nap and i could finally get some projects done!

Hope this helps.

Hey B., I think that all babies need naps. They DO NOT know what is best for them. My son did not start taking only one nap til he was about 18 mos. I would say that when it is hard to get them to take 2 naps, a toddler that is, then you should try to transition. They should go down after lunch: 12-1. If thye are sleeping past 3 or 330 in the afternoon, then they have a hard time going to sleep at night. If you put them down earlier, then by 6pm they are cranky and irritable and will probably fall asleep befor bedtime! My baby who is 9 mos doesn't like naps either. I have to sit and rock him to sleep. A nap can last from 45min to 2/3 hours. Just encourage your baby to take a nap and YOU set the routine and they will follow!

Hello B., i have been a nanny for 18 years and i can say all children are different. I also have 3 girls from 20 to 2 i know along time between them.lol i usually cut out the morning nap around 12 months. It really depends on what time the child wakes up in the morning to decide what time a nap should take place. My youngest gets up at 5 30 so i put her down between 11 30 and 12 30. Some of my children i watched were late sleepers like 7 or 8 so woud put them down around 1 or 2. Base it on her and good luck.

The general rule for transition to one nap is 12 months, so you are near there... of course, every child is different and her needs may vary according to how tired she is (up late, growth spurts, getting over a cold, etc). When both of my daughters made this transition, I moved their later afternoon nap up to right after lunch time (around noon). I work, too, so we follow the daycare schedule, which is nap after lunch for about two hours. Sometimes on the weekends, we are running around, so my 22 month old gets down late.. around 2-3, and then she sleeps for 3 hours! When she was around 1 year old and transitioned to one earlier nap, she sometimes needed a "touch up" nap... about 45 minutes, while I prepared dinner... 4:30-5:00 ish. She has dropped that now at 22 months. Through all of this, she sleeps about 11 hours at night, so that has remained constant.
