Napping in Toddler Booster Seat

My son and I took our first long car trip this week since moving him from a regular car seat into a booster seat (which just uses the seat belt as his restraint). Fortunately, he does not mind napping in the car; however, in his booster seat, he tends to fall forward since there is no harness to keep him sitting upright. I bought a booster seat which has padding and it looked like there would be enough room for his head to rest against the side, but that did not prove to be the case. He also has one of those neck pillows but that did not solve the problem, either. Does anyone know of a solution for this? Is there some type of device that prevents the "falling forward" problem? We are taking another long car trip next week and I'm hoping to prevent this from happening again.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

A big thank you to everyone who took the time to write a response to my question and send links to suggested products, car seats, etc. To be honest, I did not even realize that they now made harnessed car seats that would hold up to 80 lbs. or more. My son weighs 39 lbs. so I thought it was time to move him into a booster. After reading some of the responses (and viewing the terribly sad YouTube video that was sent), I may forgo the booster and purchase another harnessed car seat. This was my first question on mamasource and what a great place to share ideas and suggestions with others in the same boat!

If there is no other option, I would take a man's belt and put around him and the seat in some way to keep him from falling forward.

Hi A.!

My advice would be to get him a good 5 point harness seat. They are so much safer. I got a Britax Boulevard for my daughter when she turned 1 and she is almost 3 now. I really love it, and it will last for a few more years before i will move her to a bigger one. I plan to stay with this brand. They are expensive but it is so worth it. I feel good that she is safer. I saw this video a little while ago and it made me determined that she would stay in a 5 point harness for sure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azgBhZfcqaQ

I had this same problem with mine. Try tucking a few rolled-up towels behind the bottom of the seat, so that it angles back a little more, and make sure the opening for the neck pillow you're using is to the back. My Isuzu Trooper had back seats that reclined and I got so spoiled with those. I hope this helps :}

Onestepahead.com has a pillow that wraps around the seat belt, if he's using a a belt with the booster. They might sell one at walmart or target- not sure. Otherwise, I can only suggest a trip to the store for a small thin pillow. MY daughter uses an accessory pillow that I sewed a pillowcase for and that's the best I can recommend. Unfortunately, the "falling forward" problem is almost impossible to fix!

I don't think there is anything that will keep them from falling forward. My older kids are 6 and 3 1/2 and they still fall forward when sleeping. We finally just started keeping pillows in the car. That way they could fall to the side and still keep their seat belts on the correct way. If you find a device that will help, please let me know. We have used those neck pillows and that didn't seem to help at all.

The only thing to prevent him from falling over when he falls asleep is a harnessed carseat. A 3 year old is still too small and too young to be in a booster seat as it is. They lack the ability to sit properly at that age. Plus a 5pt harness is safer (for everybody) b/c it spreads out the force in a crash more. There are many higher weight harnessed seats on the market these days and I would highly reccomend you look in to getting one. The one i would probably most reccomend is the Graco Nautilus. It has a harness that goes to 65# and then turns into a nice booster. Also there is the Britax Regent, which harnesses to 80#. I have the regent for my 6yo niece and she still has tons of room in it and loves it and she is safe when she sleeps in it.

heres the regent on the britax website http://www.britaxusa.com/products/product_detail.aspx?ID=9

i hope that helps you some. i have learned so much about carseat safety in the past year and feel it is very important to pass it along. i learned a great deal of info from www.car-seat.org and i would reccomend going there and posting on the forum with any questions you have or feel free to PM me.

I give my son a pillow and blanket and he keeps the pillow on his lap so it's not quite so bad for him. This last trip we put a bucket of his toys next to him and it was tall enough for him to put his pillow on it so he could lean to the side instead of going forward so I will probably do something like that for him again here in two weeks when we have to go at it again.

Hey A.,

Just wanting to suggest a great seatbelt pillow ... it is by a company called Kalencom. I bought one for my niece with the same problem. I would suggest attaching the pillow to the seat belt, buckling your child in and then pulling the seatbelt all the way out so that as it retracts in, it locks. then your little man should not be able to fall forward and will be comfy sleeping.
hope this helps and good luck, -mb

A., we use a seatbelt snoozer for our daughter in her booster. It goes behind her head then velcros onto the seatbelt to keep it from falling and it works well. Also the idea of tilting the seat a bit helps too.
Check out this website, it gives a few good options on travel pillows that might work better:
