I'd be pretty warm at 78. I am a warm person, a sweat-er, too! I like the bedroom at 76, my husband likes it at 74. Maybe a pj top and diaper are enough.
Those diapers are really insulating and got to keep the heat in!!!
My two year old sweats profusely every single night. It is so bad that his sheet gets soaked (mainly around his head and torso - no it's not drool), He sleeps in pajamas -- shorts and short sleeved top -- and the temperature is about 78 degrees in his room (can't make it any colder -- we already have to make the downstairs 73 just to get it cooled to 78 upstairs). We run his ceiling fan and put him to bed with no covers on at all. After one hour, I go in his room and move him to the bottom of his crib so the top of the crib can dry out. I also cover him with a light receiving blanket at that time because for some reason he only sweats during the first hour of sleep.
I am hoping someone has an idea as to why he sweats so much and also a solution to prevent it or at least make him as dry as possible when he sleeps (I doubt they make wicking pajamas for 2 year olds!)
If it helps you to know this, he sleeps pretty hot in the winter. He doesn't sweat, but fleece pajamas are way too hot for him. I freeze at night under all my covers and he stays warm under one little blanket.

Some kids bodies are still developing how to adjust their body's temp. My daughter is the same way; she sweats during the summer sleeping and even sometimes during the winter, gets over heated easily when playing and sweats when just sitting when it is warmer out. Her pediatrician said that first sometimes it takes some kids longer to develop their body's temp regulation system and secondly it could just be that she has a slightly warmer body temp so to always make sure she has extra fluids since she is sweating more.
Two of my three children are like this. My daughter is actually the worst. She just turned 2 and I have to be sure to keep her in very light PJs at night and no covers. The sweating does seem worse during the first hour or two and when I check her in the middle of the night (usually to move her from her sweat puddle) she has goose bumps, so logically I cover her. Within minutes, she wakes up kicks off her covers and goes back to sleep goose bumps, sweat and all. My oldest (now 10) was the same way but has seemingly grown out of the sweating thing. Although he still gets very hot and never sleeps in covers and he doesn't sweat like he did when he was younger.
Here are a couple of things I can tell you, 78 degrees is probably way too hot for your son, cool it down a bit. Both my son and daughter do best at 72 degrees or so. It is very hard to do this as my middle boy and I are freezing people even in the middle of summer, but believe me, your boy needs it cooler, it is just his make up.
Good luck!
I think it is pretty common. I know sweating can be a symptom of sleep apnea, but if he's only sweating early on in the evening, it's probably not that.
My 9 month old is warmest and his head gets sweatiest the first hour or so of his sleep time. He often wakes himself up b/c he is warm. I don't do anything for him and he doesn't sweat or seem warm the rest of the night. I don't know if it's just the body settling down for the evening.
Our daughter was just like this. I am still like this also.. In the winter I wear open toed shoes and have not worn a coat in years..
78 is probably too hot for your child.. A ceiling fan only circulates the air. It does not add coolness. I suggest a tower fan placed facing your child.. Also I let our daughter only sleep in a diaper when she was an infant...
If you can get a mattress cover instead of just a sheet on the crib mattress it will also allow a little more circulation under your child..
I think it depends on the child and the childs weight. I live in Texas. At an absurd 93 degrees out, I keep my home at 71. My three year old sleeps without a covering blanket, short sleeves and short pants....still is a little sticky. Perhaps those little people have ovens inside!!!
If I were you, I would seek professional medical advice if you are really that worried. Personally, and I'm not a professional, I think little kids are naturally hot.

My 2 year old son is quite the sleep sweater also. It was a little alarming... At first I thought it was because he has a mass of thick curly hair. But about a month ago I read an article on the babycenter.com site. (my other fav resource for baby info) they say this symptom by itself is pretty common at this age. It is something they grow out of as their temp regulating ability matures. The signs for when this may not be normal were fever, or difficulty with or irregular breathing during sleep. These are signs of infection or potential for things like sleep apnea. So its good to know my little one is just sweating. Hope this helps!!!!
My Daughter also has this problem and she is now 7. She also sweats in the winter. I feel so sorry for her every night when I check on her but it doesn't seem to bother her. I have mentioned it to her doctor before but she didn't seem too concerned.Maybe it is something she will grow out of.
My son sweats really bad in the summer too. I had to start buzz cutting his hair in the summer because his head was the worst for sweating. With the really short hair, that seems to help and he doesn't sweat as bad. I also let him sleep in just shorts or underwear with no top on.
It would be a good idea if you would google it. My almost 2 year old is a sweaty child but not to that extent. It seems he may have over-active glands. Call his pediatrician.
