I had an infection afterward - I was good the first couple of days, then my jaw swelled up like a grapefruit and it took another 2 or 3 weeks to achieve 'normal'.
My daughter will be coming home for the holidays. She is scheduled to have all 4 wisdom teeth cut out on December 22nd. I'm just wondering if she's going to feel really bad by Christmas. How long did it take you or your teen to recover?
You ladies are GREAT!! I can't believe the great answers/helps and encouragement I received about having my daughter's wisdom teeth cut out before the holidays! We decided that we will have them cut out after Christmas and our ski trip just to avoid any misery or infections to ruin the holidays. We wanted it "over with" before all the busy activities but opted to just have the surgery done after all calms down. Thanks again for all your great advice! You're great ladies! Happy Holidays! Merry Christmas!
Blessings,
J.
I had an infection afterward - I was good the first couple of days, then my jaw swelled up like a grapefruit and it took another 2 or 3 weeks to achieve 'normal'.
I had mine out at 18 and it took a week or two for me to feel "good". I wouldn't anticipate her being a happy camper. Just try to make her comfortable.
Everyone I have ever known that had wisdom teeth removed: the third day is the worst. After that it is all up hill if there is no dry socket or other problems. I imagine she is going to feel pretty lousy on Christmas day. Good luck.
My daughter had all four sugically removed 2 days before her 17th b-day. I think for the first three days she just laid around and wasn't up to doing too much. Though she doesn't have a very high pain tolerance! I think it was about a week to get back to normal. Though I think she still had problems eating some things even longer. Make sure she really cleans her mouth well and doesn't let any food get stuck in the incision area. being young will certainly help her heal faster.
I believe the wisdom teeth were far easier to recover from than a root canal. Just let her rest that day and seh will probably still feel a little tired the next day. Big thing-------- remember no straws...no sucking....candy, straws, etc... A dry socket is the most painful part but can be avoided. Usually 2 days after she will be ready for heavier food. The rest is usually very welcomed. We never even used the pain killers after the initial day. Good luck!!! She will probably love all the attention...tell he to milk it!
I had mine out at 18 with the IV. It was a pretty good experience, but I had no complications. Good luck!
Have her sleep in a recliner for the first day or two - it will help reduce / prevent the swelling.
Make sure she is doing all of the cleaning and gargling that is suggested. I was fine at 18 after mine came out. My husband, on the other hand, did not fare as well. (SURPRISED???) His got infected, which happens very easily I hear, so just keep everything really clean, and she should be ok....maybe not perfect, but ok! Good luck ~A.~
It depends. If they are impacted, she will probably not feel very good. The main thing is be sure she follows all of the directions, because she does not want to get dry socket. I had that, and it was HORRIBLE! It delayed my recovery significantly. My husband just had his taken out last month (at the age of 40), and he was "ok" by the 3rd day, but not great. His were not impacted. However, he followed all of the directions and recovered well. Be sure she has plenty of yummy, soft food. My husband was not allowed to eat hard food until about 7 days, and his weren't even impacted! Be sure you don't force her to participate if she doesn't want to, because she may feel terrible. Hopefully, however, she'll bounce right back and be doing well enough to enjoy herself. Merry Christmas! :)
She should be fine so long as there are no complications and she follows the dentists post-op orders. I had all 4 of mine out a few years ago, and was fine within a couple of days. Just have her be very careful and follow those instructions the day or two after. I bet she'll be as good as new by Christmas Day!
When I got all four of mine out, they were impacted (not fun) and that was 20 years ago--I was fine that night. I just took my nephew to get his out and he's 18. He was in a little pain but not enough to take the meds prescribed. He was back to work the next day. Good luck!
Our daughter had hers out at 16. By the 3rd day she was back to her old self again. Her mouth was still a little tender, but she was able to eat some normal food.

Home Baker and Candy Maker(see member perks).Married to the same wonderful man for almost 12 years.
I had mine taken out in my late teens. I had the surgery on Thursday, ate a hamburger at dinner on Friday, and went on a date and ate chicken fried steak on Saturday (how do I remember that?!)!!! I was good about rinsing and icing as I was told to and recovered very quickly!
My oldest wanted to play baseball that evening (we did not let him) My second was very sick, sore and weepy for 2-4 days. I missed a week of work when I was newly married after having mine out. It all depends I guess on the child. If they give you a perscription, get it filled and stock up on things for her to snack on that are soft or liquid. If you have big plans for the Holidays you might consider summer break. Good Luck. Hope she spring back really fast and has a great holiday.
I had all four of mine taken out at once and I was still very tired by the third day. Plus, I had purple bruising on my face and it was swollen. I think she will feel "okay" for Xmas, but she won't be able to smile and laugh.
Everyone is a little different. Talk to her dentist about how big they are and if the roots are curly or straight. I was fine a day after they were removed they were small and looked more like baby teeth. But my sister's were large and one had curly roots, it looked like she had been in a barroom brawl.
Don't let her use straws or sports bottles, sucking too hard may cause dry root.
I had mine done when I was younger and it was done on Friday after Thanksgiving. I was still hurting but went to church Sunday and back to school on Monday. My diet over the weekend was mostly milkshakes and soup. By Monday I was better but not totally 100%. I think I ate regular food although soft on Sunday night or Monday morning. Hopes this helps and good luck. Just spend time together and wait for her to let you know how she's doing.
I had mine surgically removed when I was 20, they were impacted, and I recovered very quickly. His gums might be a little sore to eat certain foods at Christmas dinner, but he should be feeling fine.
Good luck and Merry Christmas
fyi for holiday photos, my face was swollen...
I'm 25 and I just got mine out at the end of September. I didnt really have any pain, but I only felt comfortable eating pureed food. So all of my meals went in a blender. YUCK! I did get dry socket and it was very painful. So I went back to the DR. and he packed it and then I was fine. The holes arent completely closed up yet, but almost.
I had mine when I was 15 years old, they knocked me out. I remember being a little sore and not eating too much. My friend had hers around 18-20 and she ended up with a really bad abscess. Gargle with salt water a lot, and make sure no food gets into it, especially eating a lot during the holidays.
I don't think she will be able to eat a regular Christmas dinner. My daughter had her teeth cut out in college, and she of course had to have someone drive her home, as the stuff they gave her to do the procedure made her not capable of driving, although they feel like they can, but notice after, that they really didn't, but they are a few days getting back where they can eat, and probably won't like anything too hot or cold. Seems like right after Christmas on the 27 or 29 would be a better day to do it, if you could get the appt. changed.
Good morning.I had all 4 of my teeth cut out out at the same time as well and I felt fine the very next day. Just make sure she takes her pain pills every 4 hours not when she starts to hurt and change the gauze in her mouth often. rinse with water and she should be good to go.

I imagine that she will feel preety bad, but you never know. My sister was in misery. She moaned and groaned and laid on the coach for two weeks. The medicine made her sick and she hallucinated.
On the other hand, I was miserable before the surgery. Mine were impacted and abcessed. I was terribly swollen. I had been unable to eat for a week before the surgery. I never felt so good as the day of the surgery. I went swimming and ate tortilla chips. The next day, I was sore, but not as sore as the days before the surgery. All in all, I felt great.
Good Luck.

when I had mine cut out it was right before a Memorial Day weekend. I remember sleeping the first day and taking it easy the rest of the weekend. I was fine, just appreciated having time to recover without pressure. Actually, I had more problems with my pain meds than I did with my teeth. I was very careful to follow doctor's instructions. Rest and no straws.
I had all my wisdom teeth pulled on the 22 of Decmeber when I was a teen. It was fine my mouth was swollen - real swollen and hurt for a day and half, but I ate two christmas dinners though I did need a pain pill for the one on Christmas Eve. As I recall the worst thing was the cold from the ice packs and looking like a chipmunk for what seemed like forever!
