Ok, so, I have long, basically straignt hair. It's just above my bra strap, with some layers. It's not exactly fine, but I don't have a lot of hair. Anyhow, I've always kept it on the longer side, never shorter than chin length, but varying between chin length and where it is now. And all my life, I've had "normal" hair. Until now. It used to be that I could easily go at least a day without washing, with no sign of greasiness whatseover. Maybe by the second day of no washing, it would start to look a little greasy, but if it was a ponytail day, no big deal if I was not going anywhere, right? But all of a sudden, like within the last 6 months, my hair is SOOO disgustingly oily! If I wash it in the morning, by that evening, it is already greasy! I mean, noticeably greasy! It's embarrassing! By the next morning, I wouldn't dare even try to have a ponytail day without washing because it looks like an oil slick!
Last summer, I had gotten a loose wave perm just for a change, and it's mostly grown out now, but I had been using moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to keep if from feeling/looking too dry from the perm. So naturally, I thought it must be too heavy for my not very thick hair, so I switched to a bodifying shampoo/conditioner, thinking that would be the 'lightest' kind to use, and that would surely solve my dilemma. NOT! After trying 3 different brands of bodifying shampoo/conditioners, I still have this problem! I'm at a loss as to what to do!
There have been no noteworthy changes to my lifestyle that I can come up with that could account for this change. No change in diet, no change in environment, no change in styling products, other than switching shampoo/conditioner. And I don't use a lot of product in my hair since it's basically long and straight. I might, on occasion, use a little hairspray, maybe some mousse if I'm scrunching it, but that's about it!
Any thoughts or suggestions? Am I doomed to deal with this forever? I dread asking this, but could this be due to aging? I'm 37, btw...
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on my gross and embarrassing problem!
You are telling my story! I moved to a humid climate and my hair has never been the same. Used to I could get up in the AM and it my hair looked fine if I needed to run into the school or something. Now Im totally embarrassed to go out like this- even just a quick errand. I cannot find a cure. I have tried cleansing shampoos, expensive shampoos so AVEDA shampoo that the store suggested and so far....nothing! My hair has never been this way and it does not do this to anyone else in the house and my girls have a very similiar hair type as me. I hope someone has a good idea for you because I need it too!

Maybe you should use a shampoo for dry hair - I know that it sounds crazy, but if you are using a shampoo for oily hair, it strips your hair of the natural oils, and then your body goes into over drive creating oil - hence the over oily problem. I think it would at least be worth a try.....

When I use a conditioner in the shower every day (like I ALWAYS did) my hair gets overwhelmed. I now use a spray on, leave in by Aveeno that is light and really more of a detangler, really. If you use a moisturizing shampoo, you really don't need conditioner at all. It will feel weird at first, but you will quickly get used to it. I did, anyways. Use a good shampoo for your hair type and just go from there.

Kathleen is right on about how to shampoo and condition. Have you tried a clarifying shampoo lately? Also, rather than using a "dandruff" shampoo which isn't good for your hair, try one with tea tree oil which is great for your scalp and cleansing your hair. Good luck!!!

Maybe you can try a dandruff shampoo since your scalp seems to be over-producing oil?? Not sure if it would work, but might be worth a try :)

Try this tip from my beauty salon. Shampoo your scalp, not your hair and condition your hair, not your scalp. In other words, when you are shampooing rub mostly your scalp, rub a dub dub all over your scalp and just squeeze it through your hair like an afterthought. With the conditioner, just the opposite - apply a very small amount on the back of your head, don't rub it into your scalp just pull through your hair and use what's left on your hands to pat around on top/front area. Also, if you blow dry, bend at the waist and blow dry upside down till partially dry, then when you are styling with the dryer, dry the roots first. Good luck!

I have found that I need to take a great brand of vitamins now that I am older and I have noticed a significant improvement to my hair and nails! But I have also switched to more natural products-including my hair care- I love the suggestion about using a shampoo that utilizes the tea tree oil below! I try to use more natural solutions instead of going the chemical route which is what the shampoos you are trying are doing. Chemicals will cause more harm then good in the long run!

I wonder if it could be a hormone issue?? If your thyroid is real low it would be dry and brittle. I wonder if other hormones could make you more oily?
