My Son's Eczema Nightmare

Moms,

I am at my wits end over my son's eczema problem (he is 5). For the past two years, the skin on the palm of his left hand has been (still is) cracked. Separated. Split up! Same goes with his fingertips. He has rashes on both of his calves, along with the back of his neck/scalp, and his lower back. For the past seven months, I have been taking him to a chiropractor who claims it is ringworm, but today, I took him to my internist who said it is eczema. Last year, I took him to his pediatrician, who told me to take him to a dermatologist. The dermatologist prescribed a steroid cream, which I used for several weeks (on and off). I later learned that steroid cream is bad for the skin (if you use it a lot, which we did). It thins the skin. So, I am anti steroid cream. It doesn't solve the root of the problem - it just very temporarily solves the problem. Anyway, the doctor told us that there is no cure for eczema. His skin is making me crazy. I feel so bad for him. His hand and fingertips are really bad. Does anyone know of an alternative or holistic way to cure eczema? Does that even exist? I don't know what to do anymore. Thank you.

What can I do next?

Hello Michelle,

I'm sorry to hear about your ordeal. Is your son allergic to anything? has he been tested for allergies? I strongly recommend that he get tested for allergies. main culprits: soy, milk. find a very mild and hypoallergenic soap, shampoo. switch laundry degergent. no bleach on any of his clothes. I'd skip dryer sheets and fabric softener.

does he take any medication on a regular basis? does he get enough magnesium in his diet?

PLEASE have him tested for gluten intolerance - I know I've given this same response to other mothers for this same concern. My son had very bad eczema until we removed gluten from his diet - he would get that symmetric rash on his legs as well as on the scalp. In hindsight, I also had eczema - I just had it at the base of the neck. That is a very, very, very common symptom of celiac/gluten intolerance. You can have him tested through this lab without a doctor's order: www.enterolab.com
This is the MOST common undiagnosed genetic disorder and unfortunately most US doctors are clueless about the myriad of symptoms. You can google celiac and eczema and find lots of articles and there are 44 medical research articles on this topic in pubmed. The reason most doctors never consider it is because the "prescription" is a gluten free diet. This means no return customers to get Rx refills. In a way, this is a very, very holistic solution to your problem.

Michelle,
I feel your frustration, anxiousness, and hurt for your son - it's bad enough for adults to deal with - i can't imagine a 5 yr old! I want you to know that there IS a cure for eczema - along with all the other nasty diseases that plague us,, and it's as simple as a prayer. I don't know where you are as far as beliefs, but all is needed for healing is that the one praying have faith in what Jesus has already done for us. HIs sacrifice meant healing to us - the problem is, not many people put faith in that or don't really accept the bible as "Truth". I will be praying for him, and because the God I have faith in loves your son, and died for him, He is faithful to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all we can ask or think! I will be praying and BELIEVING for his complete healing from all skin rashes. I am a cancer survivor and also healed from a terrible skin condition. Please read Mark 1:40-41 God Bless you and your precious family, Michelle.

my 4 yr old has it....using scent free soap lotion and detergents seems to be key....could be food related also....emotions seem to add to it...being mad or upset...kids often put the soap on one hand or do not rinse one hand as well as the other (observation over yrs of teaching) could be why one hand is worse.....

My daughter has eczema although it doesn't sound as severe as your sons. We tried prescription everything including some lotion that looked more like water to me at $100 a bottle. Nothing worked and she was itchy all the time. Then I tried Aquaphor my Eucerin and it worked almost immediately. She no longer has issues. It's about $15 a jar at Wal-Mart. They also have a shower gel that is good.

Hi Michelle
I did not read any other responses, but I noticed when our pedi ordered an allergy test from Immuno Labs (they have less then a ONE percent variance where others usually have 40% or more---check your labs) and my daughter does not have eczema anymore. We did eliminate foods from her diet temporarily and it fixed SO many problems we were having....I highly recommend this pediatrician. She just makes Sense!!!!

Hi highly encourage you to get your son allergy tested. I fought the eczema war for many years and still do; and my son has had it off and on since birth and I have tried every topical (homeopathic and gentle known to man); I purposely avoided the steroid usage. We do dead sea salt baths and that helps some. And I had the IgG test done and it was expensive but it showed those items that he was allergic too; so we started a duty elmininating those trigger foods and in two weeks the eczema was gone. Now we are struggling with the diet and doing a modified diet and allowing "cheat" days to accomdate pizza and things at school etc. And, on those cheat days I give him chewable enzymes. Go to Houston enzymes and you can read about Dr. Houston's recommendations. My doc also has us using a probiotic daily as well - which we have been doing every day along with a flax seed oil and fish oil supplement too. Let me know if you have any questions. You would be surprised to learn that its most likely a gluten intolerance. Something that they could possibly outgrow but very very common these days. I was against the diet route to remedy the situation, but my son's eczema was just horrible, and i knew that cremes were not addressing the real issue. A leaky gut also contributes to these issues too. Remember if you heal the gut, you feed the brain. And every disease starts in the gut; so you will be astounded at the progress you can make make these changes. I am totally convinced and wish I had made the changes long ago. I am just glad now, we have an approach that we can live by and that my son can still get his favorite things on occassion and still enjoy that cup cake party at school too even though, as you will see "wheat" and other things he is allergic or "sensitive" too are in almost everything. Its hard getting a 4 year old (my son) to adopt and undersand things -- but he understands it likely I passed them down to him; and I have the same allergens too -- so I do the modified diet with him to make him feel more secure in the process. Best of luck, please let me know if you have any questions, or need any futher help with anything.
K.

I used to care for a little girl with severe eczema. It's so hard to know what the root of the problem is, but I can tell you some things that we did to help relieve it. Oatmeal baths are GREAT for eczema! What works really good is stuffing knee high hosiery with whole oats, tying it and placing in the bath. It will saturate the water and then you can also use it to clean his skin with. This is also a cleanser so you won't have to use soap of any kind. Also, aloe vera feels very cool and soothing. My friend's little girl has since been allergy tested and they found that she was allergic to soooo many things, even chicken! Allergy tests might be helpful.

have you tried taking him off of all artificial ingredients? we recently started my son on the feingold diet, which takes out all artificial colors, flavors and preservatives, plus additional things like salycilates. anyway, on the website, many moms talk about their child's eczema going away..unknown food alergen caused the skin to errupt and redoing their child's diet helped.

anyway, it's a thought.
