My Son Likes to Hoard!

My nearly two year old son (will be two in dec.) likes trucks, cars, trains, airplanes, anything with wheel. Plus he loves bears and stuffed animals. He tries to carry as many as possible wherever we go. As alot of kids are this age, he's clumsy. He trips alot and when he does, he holds onto his toys for dear life, and puts he wrists out to brace his fall. So he constantly has scabs on his wrists and knees. I'm afraid one day he's really gonna hurt himself. I've tried the "pick one toy" thing, not such luck. He's a stubborn little guy. What can I do to keep my little man protected, as well as giving him the joy of his favorite toys?

What can I do next?

Hello, I think everyone is on the right track with the back pack Idea. My daughter has been carrying her own toys, and her own diapers and pullups for a long time. She loves it because she thinks she is like Dora. If he likes Diego or any other character that carries a back pack you should explain it to him useing that. It will take getting used to...but he will feel like a big boy that way.
Hope it works!

I agree with the backpack idea; it has worked well for both of my children. Of course you have to make sure it is a small backpack that he can easily carry, and then help him select a few 'special items' to put inside.

Good luck,

Hi N.!! I have a little easter basket I took out the liner and now it's just a plain basket but i let him put his cars in there and take that with him. He is the same way like to take not only one car but 2,3 or 4!! It's crazy I know!! sometimes I also put them in his pockets or in my purse if we go anywhere. Try to get him to stick with small toys. Good luck!! and if you need any more help e mail me as my son is also 2!!

What my son did was to use a small backpack to carry his toys whenever we had a trip. I don't think forcing him to leave his toys is a good idea, because it may make him feel very insecure. Just getting a small backpack or something of the sort can help him know his toys are safe and protected and will be there with him. A backpack on wheels might be the best option considering how young he is and how heavy the toys might be!

My 3-yr old is the same way! Funny boys. I had my son pick out a new lunchbox with his favorite movie on it (Cars). He carries it everywhere full of his "treasures". It keeps both of us happy. I don't have to worry about him dropping and losing his cars and he gets to take his cars with him in his "big boy lunchbox". I bet your son would love one too! Good luck!

Be the boss! If you want him to have one toy, he might cry, but if he knows you mean it, he'll be all right. It's not hurting him to only have one toy. If you stick with the one toy rule, each time it will get easier. Another thing to try would be to get him a little bag or a pouch in which he could place his one special toy. They even sell little mini-Eastland backpacks at Target and online. This would free up his arms for more important things - like balance!

My son, now nearly 2 1/2, does the exact same thing! Every toy has to go everywhere with us. And he especially loves his "BIG trucks!" I eventually got him a little, clear (so he knows that they are still there) backpack. It took few weeks, but he eventually started choosing. I thought of this because he started to put them in my purse when we went out. The backpack allows him to take as many as will fit in the backpack, and he can carry them into the store and all. Hope this works.

My son is exactly the same so I got him a little backpack and tell him he can only carry one of his "Guys" in his hands and the rest have to go in his "pak-pak". I also make sure that if he's wearing shorts they cover his knees. Sometimes if he has a lot of owies on him I just add on a few extra band-aids for protection, I let him pick out his own band-aids so he likes having lots of them.

Few! It's nice to hear that there is another boy that is like mine! My son will also be two in December and he has to carry everything he wants in that moment no matter how many things that might be. The only difference is that although he holds onto his toys for dear life, he sacrifices his face! I'm not joking, for the last month, he gets one scrape and the day it heals, he gets another. The last two have been on either side of his forehead and now, just this last weekend, it's on half of his nose. I think the other problem is that he hasn't really learned to look up when he's running! I've tried "just one" but it doesn't work....now I figure he has to learn some day and until then, I keep putting neosporin on his sores and luckily he's not scarred....yet! :)
