Hey there. I am going to have this checked out by a doc very soon, but I thought I'd throw the question out there and see what you have to say. I have 2 boys, 5 & 2. Yesterday my 2 year old laughed in my face :) and his mouth was like wide open and I happened to get a glance at his throat and was SHOCKED at the size of his glands. They are just HUGE...like scary huge. He is not sick, although had the croup like 3, almost 4 weeks ago. He has no fever, isn't complaining of any pain, he's eating fine, no cold, runny nose. Has anyone ever had a similar experience? It's not like I randomly check my kids' throats, only if they're complaining about something. What could this be??? Anyway, like I said, I am taking him to a doctor when a get an appointment (in the next couple of days), but just wanted to hear from you ladies. Thanks a bunch!

What can I do next?

My daugher (who is 6 years old) has huge tonsils too (and always has). You probably just never noticed them before. I can remember freaking out too the first time I noticed it. I was told by the pediatrician that she just has large tonsils and since they don't cause her any problems not to worry about it.

L.,
Both of my kids had the same thing. Everytime I looked in their throats I saw these two big glands. It was to the point of which I was wondering how they swallowed. It really scared me. I took them to the doctor and he told me that they both had kissing tonsils. My concern was what was going to happen if they ever became infected? I then went to an ENT and they both needed to have their tonsils removed. Eventhough they didn't have an infection, the doctor removed them as more of a precaution. My son's tonsils were removen in August of 2005 and my daughter's were removed in January of 2007 and neither one of them have had any problems nor have they been any sicker because they don't have tonsils. Be sure to get hi checked out. My ENT told me that some people just have large tonsils naturally. the only other option my ENt gave me for their treatment was a few month round of steriods to see if the medication would shrink the tonsils. I opted for the surgery, because is was short and quick and less risk than the side effects of long term use of the steroids.

Hi! I actually work for an ENT practice. Those big swollen things you can see in the back of his throat are his tonsils. Sometimes after a child has any kinda infection their tonsils will swell and stay swelled for a while. He may just have chronically swollen tonsils and adenoids and you just never noticed them before. If he is a sniffly kid, that's probably the reason. Get it checked by the doc, he will probably refer you to an ENT as well if they don't go down, but it's really nothing to worry too much about. Good luck!

Maybe he is still swollen from coughing so much. Or it could be that he just has big glands. Has there been a change in the way his face or throat looks?? If he doesn't seem uncomfortable I wouldn't worry too much. Take him and have him checked, but I have a feeling he will be fine. Maybe they have been like that all along but you never looked that close before.

PS We are all GALS on here I think. LOL

I have huge glands. Every time I go to the doctor they comment on how big they are. They are so big they are almost touching each other. I wouldn't worry about it. Espeically if he is not really getting sick and he is eating fine. It's just how some people are made up.

My daughter HAD huge glands!! She was never sick, never had strep or any of that, but she snored like a Man and kept her sister up at night. I took her to the hear, nose and throat specialist and they removed them. She now sleeps nicely and doesn't wake anybody!!!

My ped told me that many young children have very large tonsils, some even enlarged to the point where they meet in the back of the throat! (I remember being like that as a kid, and tbh, I can still stick my tongue back there & touch both tonsils at once - and I'm nearly 30). He said that as long it's not affecting their breathing & eating, there's no problem. The size will go down gradually as your child matures. :o)

Check with the doc.

If he's not snoring at night, shows no other overt signs of not getting enough rest, his doc may say watch and wait.

The glands catch bacteria and viruses before they make it to the lungs.

You'll need to be vigilant with colds, though. Those suckers can puff up like a balloon with tonsillitis or strep.

Hi,L.,

I went through the same with my son, but his was his tonsils, it was kind of scary, but with training to keep his voice low, and some yawning exercises, he was fine...This was when he was 6 years old, and he is now 42..Definitely see a doctor about this and I will pray for your little one..A.

Hi L.,

I have heard that tonsils are the battleground for a lot of infections that will go elsewhere if they are gone ... don't know if this is true or not but it makes sense to me since they don't seem to have a functional purpose otherwise.

If he has big tonsils, maybe that is a blessing...

Warm Regards,
C.

Like another poster further down the thread, I have enormous tonsils. I am 32 now and they're still gigantic. There's not problem with them. In fact, I am a professional singer and both me and my voice teachers think it might have something to do with how rich and powerful my voice is.

As long as the tonsils don't give you son problems, as long as they don't become infected a lot, he'll be fine with them throughout his life.

My 2 1/2 year old son had this a couple of weeks ago. He was totally happy, eating great, playing like a maniac, but I took him to the ped, because I had just been diagnosed with an ear infection, so I was worried he had it. Luckily, he didn't have it in his ear, but it was an infection in the gland from poor drainage...he drools a lot when he teeths, and he'd just popped a molar.

Any, hope this helps!

It appears to be almost kissing tonsils and he might have to have them removed-my son had his removed at 3 as well his adenoids. Before doing surgery (if that is what it is). Try getting him off of products with growth hormones, which might be contributing to the huge growth.
