My son is 13mos and he's had a constipation problem for about 3 mos now. We've tried prune juice, and putting him on high fiber diets...we've tried only fruit and juice diets, and using mineral oil and suppositories to help. Nothing is working. He goes anywhere from 2-7 days without a bowel movement and when he finally does it's not fun. He is in extreme pain and we don't know what else to do. HELP! Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

A small amount of Kerol or Corn syrup in his warm bottle (to melt it better) and a comfortable bowel movement will follow in a few hours...not runny or too loose. My doctor recommended and it worked wonders. A natural stool softener.

My daughter had it bad too. It would get stuck and I had to try to pull it out. Yuck..I know. But let's face it. We are talking about poop so why hold back if it helps another. I used Betty Crocker Corn Syrup...just pour a little in..tablespoon or so. Maybe two bottles in a row and then maybe once a week after just to be sure it returns to normal. As needed after that.

Good luck.

My child was born with constipation issues, and shortly after she was born, we discovered she had a condition called anal stenosis ( an unusually small, undialated rectum). This condition did not cause her to be constipated, but because she WAS constipated, she would rip her little rectum, bleed, and be hysterical at every bowel movement. Because it was such a serious situation, we had to find an answer to the constipation problem fast.
Suppositories do not soften the poop to make it come out more easily, it just lubes everything up in there.
Our savior ended up being milk of magnesia. Even at 3 months old, we were giving my daughter a quarter dose in her milk every day, and the constipation dissappeared! Buy unflavored philliphs milk of magnesia, and put 1-2 teaspoons (depending on the size of your child) in his morning cup of milk every morning. Within a day or two, the constipation will resolve itself: but you HAVE to keep up the milk of magnesia every day. If you skip just one day, the poop will become hard again, and you will have to start all over with the re-softening. Milk of magnesia is gentle, safe, and was reccommended by my pedicatrician. We kept her on it until she was 8 months old, and then took her off it to see if her body had resolved its problem, and it had. Now she poops just fine every day on her own. Unlike some of the homeopathic rememdies reccommended, the milk of magnesia is guarenteed to work, and in an emergency situation like yours, it is the quickest sure-fire way to relieve your childs discomfort. It is important too that he not develop a negative, painful, traumatic association with pooping or it will be impossible to poop potty train him in the future.
I was a constipated child as well, and this worked for my mother too.

Good luck!

My daughter has the same problem. She started getting constipated at 2 weeks old and still has problems at 2 years old. We tried everything also. We started by switching to a hypoallergininc formula, which worked great. When she started milk the problem was back. We then tried soy milk, mineral oil, suppoistories, juices, high fiber, and so on. She is now on Miralax which is a prescription laxative and even it don't help on a lot of days. If you are not seeing a good GI doctor I suggest you get one. There are many things that can cause constipation and you need to rule all of those out. We have been through numerous xrays, a rectal biposy, a colonoscopy and much blood work. We still have no answers so it shows that it is not an easy solution all the time. Please feel free to e-mail me if you want to talk. I do know what you are feeling and it is so fusturating! My e-mail address is ____@____.com luck. We go back to our GI doctor next Tuesday so you will be on my mind.

Find a chiropractor in your area. I just recently left my own chiropractic practice where I treated many children with the exact same problem and with just a couple adjustments (some times just one) the constipation problem is gone. It is a natural way to help balance out the body. Kids fall on their butts all day long, there could just be some structural things that need to be addressed. It is safe...I adjusted my daughter when she was just 4 hours old and she gets adjusted regularly about once a week. I can help find you a Chiro in your area if you decide to try it.

My 5 year old goes throguh the same thing.. We finally had to get Miralax and it works great. Talk to your dr. about it first though. Also, be aware that dairy can cause constipation, so you might want to take all dairy out of his diet.

I recomend the miralax and no-dairy. And if that doesn't work, you might need to see if the dr. will test him to see if there is something more serious going on.

Hi L.,
My 3 yr old son had the same problem from the time he was born to about 3 months ago. He would go a week without a bowel movement then it was HORRIBLE. He'd cry and scream. I had tried everything from juice to skim milk to laxitives. The only thing that worked was the mineral oil. My family swears by it. We have 3 kids in the family w/ the same problem. You just have to be consistant. We started every single night w/ dinner then pudding or ice cream <-- which included the mineral oil. If he wasn't in the mood for that, we'd put it in chocolate milk. He knew what was going on. We didn't have any secrets. He knew that would help him go to the bathroom. Then, we found out every night was too much and cut back to every other night. Now, after a few months, he gets it about once a week.

My doctor told me it's all in the mind. When they feel the "urge" they freak out thinking it will hurt. So, they shut themselves down. As soon as that "link" between the mind is "fixed" they should go back to normal.

Sorry to babble, but this is something I know quite a bit about. I battled it for almost 3 years. I hope this helps. Feel free to email me with any questions. Good Luck!!

L.

Hi L., My son has the same problem. My doctor told me to give him BENIFIBER, it worked so good. I tried everything and nothing else worked. I would ask his doctor first because my son is 2 1/2.

Hey L. I had the same problem as a baby myself... when I was a baby they called it spastic colon and I needed to be on Medication. It has followed me thru life and made it miserable at times. Now its caled IBS more common in adults but babies and kids can get it to I would talk to our babys doctor about the possibilities of IBS because if thats the case no amount of fiber and laxitives juice or food will help it. Good luck! I hope your little boy gets some relief soon

Oh that it horrible! First thing check family history and get into a doctor. Your son may also be lactos intollerant. Until you get into your doctor, you may want to cut out milk & dairy products, and try a baby laxitive. Also most doctors have a 24 hour nurse line, call them up they might have some great advice for you. I use to call them all the time when my daughter was an infant.

A friend at church mentioned her son had the same problem around the same age. She said she put him on the toilet, he went, and it helped him. She said he PREFERS to go on the toilet and he's only like 14 months old! But it helped him with the constipation... just one more idea to go along with the many others!!

L.,

I see this in a lot of kids and this is something that needs to get under control quick. Take a look at his total diet. Make sure he is not getting too much protein. Make sure his is drinking plenty of water. This will help flush. Stay away from citrus juices and juice with sugar. This will complicate the problem. NO cheese or milk right not until the bowel movements become easier. Also, aloe is a good way to gently clean your system and soften the stool. You can get the aloe from me.

If you have more question or are not sure what to feed him, give me a call I will give you a free evaluation. If this doesn’t work take him to see your pediatrician.

Hope this helps and good luck.

My grandson was constipated starting when he was just a few months old until he was around
2 1/2, There are medical causes for constipation and I'd recommend that you first take him to the doctor to rule those out if the constipation continues for several weeks.

The first thing that we tried was limiting him to 24 ozs of milk per 24 hours, no cheese, no bananas or applesauce, no white bread or pasta because they are all constipating. And to include plenty of water and fiber. Emphasis on WATER. Fresh fruits and vegetables are good. Even apples are OK if they're raw. Also give him whole wheat bread (read the label) beans and applesauce, prunes, and cherry juice. That didn't work for my grandson.

Then his doctor recommended Benefiber when he was just a few months old. It readily dissolves and so you can put it in any liquid. That helped some but not enough. And so then he got a prescription laxative. The dr did not recommend over the counter laxatives. As I recall she said not to use mineral oil because it interferes with the absorption of oil soluable vitamins. I would suppose that if this is just a once in awhile or short term thing it might be OK. We treated his constipation daily for a couple of years. At about 2 1/2 his bowel movements became normal. He screamed nearly all the time when he was constipated. Once when he was with his aunt she called an ambulance she was so sure he was seriously hurt. The emt manually helped him to remove the large hard mass and he was OK.

Sometimes we could help him push it out by laying him on his back and pushing his knees towards his torso.
