Hello Fellow Moms,

So, yesturday afternoon after getting my son up after his daily nap, I soon discovered that he had developed a rash. I've dealt with diaper rashes in the past but I'm concerned about this one because the rash is only around his genital area and the inner folds of his thighs. I've never seen a diaper rash like this before, there is no peeling of skin, bumps, lesions, or anything else concerning. All I can tell you is that is genital area and scrotum area are both extremely red, in addition to the inner folds of both of his thighs. I gave him a bath with baking soda and I put Destin on the affected area but now I'm wondering if maybe this is a yeast infection.

If there are any moms out there who have experienced this or if anybody has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it your comments.

Thanks,

S.

If it's concerning you, I would call the pediatrician as well. I am always worried that putting the wrong thing on the area will make it worse. Hope it clears up soon - poor little guy!

Sounds like a yeast infection. You might try mixing a little Monistat with the Desitin and putting that on it. Good luck !

We had something similar last week. the nurse at the ped's office told us to use Lotrimin 1% in the morning and night, and triple paste AF (anti fungal) and to keep him bare bottomed as much as we dared.

it cleared up in a weekend.

good luck to you and yours,

It could also be heat rash/prickly heat. It can come on pretty fast in warm weather, esp in the genital area and folds of skin.

Sounds like a heat rash that's turning into a yeast infection. Call your ped.

It sounds like yeast. Try Lotrimin 1% from any pharmacy about $8 I think. If that doesn't work (it didn't with my daughter but I think hers was more severe) call your old pediatrician, they may write a prescription over the phone (ie. call the pharmacy directly), that's what ours did, although it was a repeat prescription.
NO cornstarch, the yeast feeds of it.

Yeast infections are easy to treat. Since this is the first one, take him to the ped to confirm. A little ointment and this will clear all up.

It does sound like a yeast infection. You could try Monistat or I've had good luck with coconut oil.

Could well be yeast - it grows easily in dark, wet places like the folds of the skin. Could also be heat rash - same problem - although that sometimes shows up in other area so check the folds of his neck and inside the elbows and armpits, behind the knees sometimes.

Our pedi told us no powder or cornstarch ever, and try to let things air dry (I know - dangerous with an undiapered kid!). She had us use warm washcloths and not wipes but you could try unscented hypoallergenic wipes (baby or otherwise).

You may need an antifungal to treat the yeast. Talk to the pedi or the pharmacist for suggestions.

Someone else posted a similar question today, so read those responses as well.

Thank you so much for all of your responses, however I should've mentioned that he's gotten a yeast infection once before when he was still a newborn; he is now 13 months old. His Ped recommended using Lotrim and Aquaphor, in addition to letting him go diaper less as much as possible, and giving him a daily bath with baking soda. She also recommended I use cornstarch instead of baby powder to keep the area dry and that also helped. Currently, I don't have health insurance, so a trip to his doctor will be financially difficult but obviously, if he needs to go, I will find a way. He doesn't have a fever, he didnt cry in pain the last time I changed him, and he doesn't have anyother unusual symptoms, all he has is a lot of redness in his private area and the inner folds of his thighs.

Are there any other moms out there who had a similiar experience with their son?

Thanks,

S.
