I had a baby 5 1/2 months ago. My hair starting falling out about 4 months post and continues to fall out-I am not just saying here and there but by the hand full. It is dry and has not body or volume in it. When should my health hair return?

What can I do next?

It will probably stop at seven or eight months. Thats when mine stopped falling out. You should try using Nioxin. Its really great for thinning hair(I'm a hair stylist) it will help a lot. It's actually on sale right now at Cost Cutters.

You're normal. But I would nourish the locks you do have with egg yolk and olive oil on a damp head and/0r avacado :)

I had many of the same symptoms with my hair plus a few others after the birth of my first baby 5+ years ago. I talked to my Primary doctor and my OB/GYN about it and they tested me for hypothyroidism. My levels were far above the normal 1-2 range. Once I got on some meds many of the symptoms disappeared or got significantly better. Also, your thyroid can effect your chances of getting pregnant again, so an on top-of-it OB or primary Ph will continue to check your levels periodically.

I think everyone is different, mine got thin after the baby 6 months for a few months but it did stop and get better. So hang in there. Its temporary.

I had the same thing happen, loosing hair all over the place. I vacuumed almost every day and still would find my hair on anything that touched the floor, or would run my fingers through my hair and have to run a wad of it to the trash. I am not completely sure if it was my thyroid (since that can be an issue, and often is with me) or an increase in testosterone due to a seritolydic cyst on my ovary (which I had to have removed). Either way I would think a thyroid level, and testosterone level would be a good thing to ask your Gyno about. hormones and the hair can be symptoms of larger underlying problems, or were in my case. Hopefully the hair is the most of your problems. good luck.

Your hormones may not be right. Check with your gynocologist. My mother lost most of her hair after her second, me, was born. She had too much testostorone. So if it doesn't mprove soon or is really bad. Call your OB/GYN

Sorry to say not until 10-12 months post-partum. But it's completely normal and you're not really losing that much hair (despite what it seems like). A great product is Tre-Seme Hair Boost. It's about $3 and fantastic!

This is totally normal after you have a baby. I am sure your OB/GYN can you the medical explanation for it, but don't worry you are not going bald! With all three of my kids, it took a long time for the handfuls of hair to stop!

while you wait for it to come back, try getting some collostrum (sp?) it is the hair stuff they do the deep conditionings with in the salon. you can get it at Sally Beauty for only a few dollars. My hair lady told me about it because I color my hair all the time and it was so dry-- anyway I use it once a week and it helps keep my hair soft and shiny--it will at least help it have health!! and invest in a good haircut, that was what I did, I got some great layers and it gave it the volume I had lost until my hair was back to normal. hang in there...it passes.

What I understand is that you're actually finally losing the extra hair your body grew and held on to while you are pregnant. Didn't you notice that your hair seemed so much thicker after a few months of being pregnant? Even my hairdresser noticed the difference in mine. It is sort of like your body retaining additional "protection" while you're with child. Arm hair and facial hair can sometimes seem a bit thicker, too. Check this link for a brief explanation:

http://life.familyeducation.com/signs-and-symptoms-of-pre...

After the baby is born and your hormones slowly get back to normal, the body lets go of all that extra hair from when you were pregnant. It is average to loose about 50-100 hairs each day, anyway, so when you're loosing extra after pregnancy it can seem alarming.

I was losing gobs of hair every day until my son was probably 8 months old. The article linked above says to allow about 6 months. Now my hair thickness is back to my prepregnancy state -- my hair elastics fit easier, etc. I wouldn't worry too much about your hormones at this point. Give yourself a few more months and congrats on the new little one!

Lisa,

I am not a doctor, but hair loss is often a sign of throid issues. There is a guy in town, David Fraum who runs Health Quarters Ministries. He can get you muscle tested to see what vitamins you might need. There are vitamins for throid, so you wouldn't have to take drugs. Their office number is in the phone book.

When you are pregnant you don't really lose any hair so about 3 or 4 months postpartum it is really common to lose a whole lot of hair. I always lose a ton of hair for a few months at that point. Also, my skin is more oily while I am pregnant so when it goes back to normal at 3-4 months postpartum my hair gets dry. Hang in there, it should only last a couple of months. If your hair is getting unusually thin compared to how you were before you were pregnant ask your doctor about it.

I'm sorry to tell you that mine just stopped falling out so much about a month ago and my baby is almost 14 months old, although everybody is different so maybe you won't be so long. Just know that it is because of hormones and it is normal. Good luck

Lisa,
Have you checked with your doctor about your thyroid levels. My hair had been doing that and my thyroid was all out of wack. It was really bad right before and after my 2 children were born. Other than that i am not sure what could be causing it to fall out like that. Hope it helps.

This is completely normal. During pregnancy, you don't shed your hair. So sometimes after you have the baby, it will fall out then, or if you are breastfeeding, when you wean it will fall out. It has happened to me with both my kids. Both at 4 months and I exclusively breastfed my children until 8 and 9 months. My doctor AND my hairdresser warned me this would happen, but assured me it is completely normal!!

Hi Lisa, My hair started falling out around 2 1/2 mo. after I had the baby and continued falling out until she was about 6-7 mo. My hair dresser said that it was a hormone that was going strong while breast feeding and that since I didn't lose much hair while I was preg. then it seemed to be a lot. And it was. Gobs and Gobs would come out in the shower. Around 6.5 mo. I slowly transitioned my nursing baby to the bottle as my milk supply was dwindling and almost immediately my hair stopped coming out by the handful. It is now growing back in and I call them my duck feathers as they are really fine and all around my face and in the areas of a receding hairline. Good Luck, L.

Lisa, I know how you feel. My son will be 7 months next week and my hair has been falling out a lot since he was 2 months. my hair has always been pretty thick and its noticably thinner (to me). I asked family and friends if that was normal and they all said the same thing others on here have posted. But I wasnt satisfied because of the amount falling out. I have always had Thyroid issues so I was kind of used to my hair falling out here and there. but this was way more than usual. Anyway I went to the Dr and they did some blood work to see if there were any other factors involved and turns out I also have a liver condition which could also trigger more hair lose. My hair is still falling out and it is actually making me feel depressed at times cause I cant start treatment for my condition until I am finished breast feeding. I want my son to have the benifit of brestfeeding for as long as possable. I may end up bald before then. The sacrifices we make for our children. Follow your gut, if you are really concerned I would ask your Dr. I'm glad I did because now I can treat this before much more damage gets done to my liver. Hopefully there are no other factors involved for you and it's just hormones.
Best wishes
A.

It can take a while for it to stop falling out and start growing back in. I don't remember exactly when my hair started growing back but I know it was in the first year. So hang in there it will get better.

Hi Lisa,
I'm a hairdresser and have some experience in this arena. The one thing that has helped me and others with this problem has been Nioxin Shampoo and Conditioner. It helps you keep the hair that is falling out. Plus, it will help encourage the hair that has fallen out to regrow.
