My Little Boy Has Chronic Kidney Failure!

My 11yr old son has been plagued with a variety of medical issues since his birth. With him being only 2 months old, he spent pretty much his whole first year of life between the hospital and home.
He is being catherized 5x a day because his bladder will not empty completely when he goes pee. They also believe that if and when he urinates on his own he is straining which places a ton of pressure on his kidneys. The doctors believe that by eliminating that pressure it will help his kidneys.
Recently he has been diagnosed with high blood pressure and his kidney doctor placed him on cozaar for it. After doing some research I learned that the high blood pressures ties in with the chronic renal insufficency. However I am concerned that him being on blood pressure medication this early could possibly have some negative effects later on in life. His peditrician, cardiology, urologist, and renal specialist all believe he should be on this medication but it stil does not place my heart at ease. I have always trusted the doctors opinion but feel for something as simple as blood pressure that other measures should have been taken before placing him on medication... you know like diet and exercise... or eliminating or lowering his sodium intake...

i'm not really sure what i want to get out of this but if anyone out there knows someone going through the same or has some helpful information please let me know. I've tried the national kidney foundation and childrens hospital for support groups but they dont seem to have any pediatric support groups for any of his conditions.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, we purchased a blood pressure monitoring kit and keep track of his blood pressure. He will still have to take the medication but we are hoping that he will not need it because his pressures have been consistantly low when the medication is no longer in his system.
thanks for your help

I can understand to a point how you feel,I myself grewup with many kidney problems and to this day still have them..One of my oldest daughters has the problem to and now the middle daughter is getting symptoms..I was lucky enough not to have the blood pressure meds but was requested to put stints in to help the flow of urine..The doctors say my bladder is the size of Cleveland which causes backup to the kidneys which inturn causes a huge infection and so on..Does your son have the stints and if not would the doctors think it may make a difference??I'm not sure where you are but the hospitals and doctors in Boston are supposed to be top knotch and my husband is from Cleveland and says the Rainbow Childrens hospital is phenominal..Check out their sites maybe they can help your son..I feel so bad for him to have to go through this so young..I pray that he does get better and I am sure you are a wonderful parent and he knows that...Keep smiling....and I wish you luck and lots of prayers....C.

I am new to mommasource but my daughter (9yr old) has a heart condition and over the years I have found the pharmacists to be a great source of information. They seem to be able to see the whole child vs heart, kidney, liver, etc. Maybe they could suggest another protocol. Some pharmacists are also trained in alternative ways.

Your poor little guy! It's terrible that he should have to go through so much so young.

My advice on the blood pressure med issue. Diet and exercise modification to correct blood pressure works well when the lack of those things are the problem. For middle aged Americans, it is usually a poor diet, lack of exercise and stress that causes high blood pressure. Therefore, correcting those conditions alleviates the high blood pressure. Also, most Americans take in too much sodium as part of their daily diet. So, cutting salt helps with correction in that case.

It doesn't sound like those lifestyle issues are the cause of your son's blood pressure problems. Therefore, changing them probably won't alleviate the problem. If you uncomfortable with medicating him for this, get an opinion from a doctor outside of his regular medical team. If it truly needs to be done, then do it. We all hate "pilling" our kids. But if it's a symptom associated with a diagnosed condition, then it's in his best interests to follow the recommendations.
