My son is 9 and knows how to sew a buttonhole on my sewing machine- and I don't! He can look at a circuit board and tell you which parts are capacitors, resistors, and light sensors.
I walked into my daughter's room and she is putting all her clothes in a box because she is packing for our big trip to Grandmas. We just came back from Grandmas and not going on any big trips for awhile. But it got me thinking at 2 1/2 she knows what to pack and what to leave home. She tells me to charge the battery on her DVD player, and when we get to the airport, she immediately starts taking her shoes off to go through security and puts her stuff in a bin, all unprompted. It got me thinking, maybe we travel to much. I mean how many 2 year olds know security protocol in an airport.
I forgot my daughter is more proficient on an iPad than I am. And to answer the question. As of a few weeks ago, children under 12 do not need to take off their shoes. Try explaining that to my daughter. We tried, and she was like "No, my shoes come off too". What ever it takes to get her through the line quickly.

My son knows how to work my Nikon camera better then I do at 7, along with my husband's Ipad. At 5 he could tell you the exact make and model of an airplane.
HA! I love that age. I used to absolutely LOATHE that I didn't have more interesting/useful things to emulate, since at that age they copy *everything*. That's not travelling too much. That's her learning something useful :)
Two stories, one related to yours, and one that actually answers your Q. You know the big deal about airport scanners last year? Well... here was my son's take on them in the airport:
"My ONE chance to show someone my bum and NOT get in trouble for it, and I have to get patted down!" grumble grumble grumble
You can tell my son is either 9 or 16 (when the superman vision scanners came out and he didn't "get" to go through the "Sun-And-Mooning-People-Line" as he called it), because man oh man, was he disappointed not to Greek God it in the scanner.
TODAY... we were driving to Aikido (terrible traffic, 20 minutes took an hour), and he's chattering away and suddenly pops up with
"Frog-Choppers!"
"Yeah, that was funny," I say, thinking he was referencing the song "Chickens with Choppers...Cows with Guns" that we were listening to last week.
"No, mom, LOOK!"
So I LOOK.
Nope. He was right. A whole squadron of Phrogs (CH-46's) was coming in at full tilt.
I've been out of the military for over 10 years, since before boyo was born. I mentioned Phrogs something like 2 years ago. The boy has a mind like an elephant.
"Did you know that the ox-pecker has a symbiotic relationship with the rhinocerous?" My son asked me this a couple of months ago. He was 5.
My brother was over and made some comment about how beautiful the weather was and my son, same one, says, "Oh good! We can get our vitamin D for the day!"
L.
Well, at one point, both my boys knew every single pokemon, how they evolved, what their strengths or whatever they are, etc. Not exactly street smarts or useful smarts like your daughter, but it's something, right? Lol!
Cracked me up when my two yr old son got a toy cell phone and after holding to his ear and chatting he starting pretending to snap pictures. and I thought-wow, he just takes it for granted that cell phones take pictures! It was still new to me!
My oldest(8) knows how to chant with a set of beads properly, she knows every word to Don Mcleans "american pie". She checks all her candy for gross ingredients like gelatin(cow bones) and red 40 (beetle shell dye) She knows the difference between a porter and a lager by smell alone (we are home brewers).......lol she is always giving people pause when she wants to hear Frank Sinatra or Louis Armstrong at parties.
My youngest(2) is still learning her odd things but her food vocabulary is amazing. She knows by recognition and can pronounce the sweeteners "agave nectar" and "stevia"......and when she sees a "kombucha" on the shelves in a drink aisle she will scream for it. Other than that you will hear her ask for very odd fruits and veggies such as an "asian pear""star fruit" or "avocado" and "jicama"
My son can give you a detailed description of how black holes are formed and time space.
He decided about 8 months ago he had to know he HAD to know everything there was to know about black holes. He just turned 7. He also knows which superheroes are Marvel and which are DC. And don't you dare cross the brands.
My daughter , now 9, when she was about 2 ran up to the chicken pen at the local zoo and said " mmmmm chicken" She knew exactly where her chicken nuggets came from.
My 3.5 yr old son knows that the deer we shoot outside is the same deer that we eat in our tacos. :)
There's a new rule that they don't have to remove shoes?
My DD plays library with her play grocery scanner because our libraries are all on a scanner/barcode system. We scan my library card and then we scan each book or CD or whatever. She knows where they go when they get returned.
tell you what my son does NOT know - he does NOT know what a rotary phone is. :) or a vcr.
he does, however, know how to work the dvr better than i do, work a computer, play the WII and psp...and he's 5. to me that's rocket science. oh and he does know all the planets and can identify them from a picture...which is also beyond me.
When our daughter was 4, we were at an art festival. One of the artist makes these amazing Glazed pottery buildings. They are curved.. Very interesting that they are balanced.
As our daughter walked by, they were right at her eye level. She stopped and pointed and announced "Pier and beam houses!" We and the artist cracked up, my husband said to the artist, "you can tell a lot about our lives.."
She was always making these amazing observations.. She actually pulled a joke on us when she was 5.. So matter of fact..
LOL, my daughter knows all this too. We used to fly about every other month. Now that she is in school it will be mostly holidays.
My son knows what the little metal or plastic thingees on the tips of your shoelaces are called.
since when? we just came back from a trip overseas and my kids were required to take shoes off.
My kids know a lot of things. They're 7. They know not to sit their behinds on public bathrooms. They know, after washing hands, not to touch the doorknob (public restroom) without a towel in their hand.
They know their DS battery lasts 8 hours so they always charge their old one as well in case the new ds dies during a trip. They know when we eat during a trip, they need to eat well because no food for another 4 hours.
All my family is overseas. I was so pleasantly surprised when before we went on our trip my daughters asked me if I have gotten gifts for family members (I always do, so they have taken notice). I said well yes one or two things each and they said mom you know everyone loves gifts from America, so don't be cheap (I wasn't being cheap) but loved loved loved realizing what generous kids I am raising.
Then one day, while we were on our trip, a little girl beggar approached us. I out a few change on her hand, and while she was turning around to ask the other table for charity, one of my daughters gave me a not so pleasant look. I said, I gave her. She said mom with what you gave she won't be able to afford food for her family. The little beggar girl was less than 5 years old. I gave my daughter a big bill and said give it to her. She did, and had this huge huge smile on her face. I am not raising entitled kids. I am raising loving caring kids. If that continues as they grow, I have done my job.
My 5 knows every super heros real name and who they are related to and what comic they are from. And he can beat the game marvel vs capcom 3 :)
my son knows it too. I'm the person chugging a protein smoothie while in line at security and my 6 year old is reminding me i can't take it through security.
he loves the new rule that makes him exempt from taking off his shoes. :)
Ha ha. Too cute.
My son knows how to pt the mail in them mailbox so it will get picked up.
He plays grocery store & scans his debit card in the. cash register he has.
He texts on his play phone. ha ha :)
He talks on the phone to my parents.
HAHA Thanks for the smle.
She is probably better able to handle airport security than I am.
Be sure to write this all down in her book because when she are 16 you will not remember her being so efficient. :o)
Mine knows the whole security protocol. When he was three he went up to some other kid in the airport, introduced himself and asked where the kid was going. To grandma's said the other kid - where are you going? Oh, I'm going to a conference (and yes he was). He knows to pack his small toys and squashable stuffed animals, not the stiffer ones.
Is there some new rule about not taking your shoes off? We last flew mid September and we all had to take ours off.
My 5 yo son knows every traffic and safety sign. And I mean every one of them. He could take the driving test right now and get more correct than 90% of adults. lol
