Should I be concerned? My dtr(5yo) had her tonsils out on Tues and still is not eating. I have to force her to at least eat a couple bites of something. My son was eating the day after his having his tonsils out. She is drinking but won't touch shakes, or icecream. Only milk. Do I need to be concerned yet??

Hi L.,
I had my tonsils out at age 30, and I am now 46, only 16 years ago but I can still remember what it felt like afterwards. The one thing that helped me was Juicy Fruit chewing gum. My doctor said it would keep the area salivated and therefore I would heal faster and it worked. I started chewing it the minute I left the hospital, I had it done on a Friday morning and I was back to work on Monday, no problems at all, Well it worked for me, Hope this helps, Good luck, K.

When my daughter had her tonsils out she didn't eat for a week. We tried everything...I was very concerned but the ENT said she was fine and she would eat when she was ready. Sure enough when she started feeling better she was back to her old self. If you are really worried I would call the doctor but I think she will be fine. I rememeber trying smoothies, jello, shakes, etc and she didn't want anything.

Most of my friends said their kids recovered very quickly and were back to eating after 2 days. My daughter took the full 10 days to recover.

She might still be in a bit of pain or just afraid it will hurt. I would just let her eat what she wants for a few more days. You might check with her surgeon. Poor little sweetie, I hope she is well soon!

L.,

As long as your daughter is drinking fluids I would not worry. I had my tonsils out when I was in my 30's and it was the most excruciating pain I ever had. I would make sure that you are keeping her medicated with her pain medication, using an ice pack to her neck, and keep offering her different soft foods to eat. Try putting some chocolate or strawberry Nesquick in her milk. Be patient with her, she is probably afraid of the pain that will come with eating. I remember that it took me an hour to eat a small scoop of mashed potatoes 4 days after mine were removed. If she is not attempting to eat a little bit of something in a couple more days then call the doctor. Another thing you can try for her is Ensure or Pediasure so she can get some calories. I know that Ensure has an absolutely yummy Butterpecan flavor. I wish you luck and quick healing in you little girl. Blessings! J.

Had mine done at 28...was 'out of it' for about 10 days and then like a miracle, just snapped back.

My son had his done at 4 and was fine the next day. She'll be okay. She won't starve just urge her to keep hydrated. Eventually a hungry tummy will overpower the sore throat.

If your concerned about the nutrition of your daughter give her slightly chilled pediasure. There are several different flavors to choose from. Best of luck to you and your daughter in the recovery.

As the mom of a recent adenoids and tonsils, I feel your pain. But, as long as they drink, they are fine. My son didn't eat for 9 days. Now, this is a boy who is off the charts for ht and wt, and he is fine now. Our only salvation was cold pudding. He wouldn't TOUCH anything from the freezer... I think it was too cold!! Good luck, and if she is drinking milk, well, stock up!!

My daughter had her tonsils out at 8 years old. they said she would be out of school for 2 weeks and she wouldn't want to eat anything but posicles and ice cream. They also said each child heals differently. Well My daughter was out of school for 2 in a half weeks and she ate very selective foods. Certain popsicles would burn and hurt her throat. If she just had her tonsils out you are just at the beginning girl good luck its a tough 2 weeks. I am not kidding you exactly on the 10th day of her surgery you will see and extremely different child. Complete 360. also Certain food for a month or so will bother her. Her worse struggle is when she wakes her throat is dry and hurts the worst she need to eat a sleeve popsicle or something my daughter still to this day sometimes needs one to get going because her throat is dry. She had her surgery right after easter last year. As long as she has liquid going in and she s not dehydrating shes good. Slurpees was my daughters favorite. Just keep the fluid going. Good luck.
