My Dilema of the Day. Stupid Door!

So, my 3 y/o son apparently turns into the incredible hulk when I am not looking and completely ripped his doorknob off the door. Both sides. :)
I have been bitching at my husband for a week to fix it, but I am putting my pms aside and giving the dude a break because he works 24/7.
Anyhoo, the only thing that is left are the insides of the doorknob, in which the past week when my son either closes the door, or locks himself in there, I have been able to open it with a screwdriver. Gangster huh?
Luckily, he is not currently locked in there because for the life of me I cannot get the damn thing open. Pretty sure we officially screwed up the insides and something is stuck. OH, I tried my credit card trick too, didnt work.
I cant get his laundry out, put it away AND no nap for him today. Ahhhhh! Its annoying me.

Any tricks to get it opened that I havent tried?

What can I do next?

Once you get open, take the whole knob out/off. It's not hard to do. Then go to Lowes or Home Depot, but a new one, and install it. I've done before by myself and it literally takes 10 minutes tops.

Can you try gripping a wrench or pliers around the mechanism and yanking it or wiggling it?

Take the hinges off. Screwdriver and a hammer should do it (IF they're on the outside!)

Buy a new lock, take the mechanism from the new one to open the old. They tend to be very much alike regardless of brand. The take the screw driver and unscrew the plate on the door and remove the rest of the lock. Then if you adventurous replace the lock.

It isn't hard. My kids seem to break one a year.

Oh I guess I could tell you that there should be what looks a half moon inside. The screw driver must be wedged in so that it catches that in the right direction though once the knob is removed it should be either direction. There is no way the door is locked without the knob in so if something is stuck you are going to have to break it apart without breaking the door.

Is the door swollen? This happened with my sons room before it became his room. The door swelled and locked itself while I was in there and I had to climb out a window. Did the knob have a lock? If so you can unlock it you just have to study the lock. once you get the the door open the inside of the door knob come out really easily. just unscrew the plate by the jamb.

You can take the door off the hinges if they are on your side of the door (please do not so this alone). Try the screwdriver again, you should be able to see where the doorknob would be turning inside the hole.

If you get it open take the rest of the door knob off until your hubby can replace it. There are two screws to remove the piece that goes into the door frame. Once that is gone the door will not stay closed.

Good Luck.

My son could not get himself out of his room this weekend. His doorknob just stopped working. Thankfully he is 18 and didn't freak out (although I do believe I could smell the smoke coming out of his ears!) Luckily he had a hole in the door (it was a door that had a space for a dead bolt that we had just covered, tacky, yes but temporary!) so I passed him a screwdriver through it and he took off the entire doorknob leaving only the inside mechanism. Your post about that getting jammed has me realizing we need to get the new doorknob today, not tomorrow. So sorry this happened to you. Have you tried grabbing the inside mechanism with pliers and pulling it? Ugh, I am so sorry this happened to you!

go to home depot and let them guide you. I do think you can fix this yourself without your husband. My bet is that all you will need is a screwdriver.

I would suggest you go lay down with him on your bed and get a nap for both of you.

Call hubby and ask him if he'd like you to call a locksmith or handy man or does he want you to go buy the new doorknob so he can fix it tonight?

If he is not going to be able to do it tonight then you need to go buy another doorknob and ask the hardware guys how to get the old one out. Then fix it yourself.
